Gestural abilities of children with specific language impairment.

BACKGROUND: Specific language impairment (SLI) is diagnosed when language is significantly below chronological age expectations in the absence of other developmental disorders, sensory impairments or global developmental delays. It has been suggested that gesture may enhance communication in children with SLI by providing an alternative means to convey words or extend utterances. However, gesture is a complex task that requires the integration of social, cognitive and motor skills, skills that some children with SLI may find challenging. In addition, there is reason to believe that language an

The Otalgia Point: A Novel Clinical Gesture in Otolaryngology.

INTRODUCTION: In cases of otalgia without any accompanying findings, some patients locate their otalgia below the attachment of the lobule, at the apex of the jugulodigastric region. PURPOSE: To present a series of these patients for whom nasal steroids or myringotomy usually ameliorated their pain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two patients with normal physical examinations, tympanograms, and age-appropriate audiograms spontaneously indicated otalgia at "the otalgia point." Inspection of the oropharynx and nasal airway, palpation of the neck and temporal mandibular joints, and nasopharyngos

Gesturing by speakers with aphasia: how does it compare?

PURPOSE: To study the independence of gesture and verbal language production. The authors assessed whether gesture can be semantically compensatory in cases of verbal language impairment and whether speakers with aphasia and control participants use similar depiction techniques in gesture. METHOD: The informativeness of gesture was assessed in 3 forced-choice studies, in which raters assessed the topic of the speaker's message in video clips of 13 speakers with moderate aphasia and 12 speakers with severe aphasia, who were performing a communication test (the Scenario Test). Both groups were

Gesture comprehension, knowledge and production in Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although apraxia is a typical consequence of Alzheimer's disease (AD), the profile of apraxic impairments is still subject to debate. Here, we analysed apraxia components in patients with AD with mild-to-moderate or moderately severe dementia. METHODS: Thirty-one patients were included. We first evaluated simple gestures, that is, the imitation of finger and hand configurations, symbolic gestures (recognition, production on verbal command and imitation), pantomimes (recognition, production on verbal command, imitation and production with the object), general knowledge

Gesture as a support for word learning: the case of under.

ABSTRACTForty children, aged 1 ; 8-2 ; 0, participated in one of three training conditions meant to enhance their comprehension of the spatial term under: the +Gesture group viewed a symbolic gesture for under during training; those in the +Photo group viewed a still photograph of objects in the under relationship; those in the Model Only group did not receive supplemental symbolic support. Children's knowledge of under was measured before, immediately after, and two to three days after training. A gesture advantage was revealed when the gains exhibited by the groups on untrained materials (bu

Finger recognition and gesture imitation in Gerstmann's syndrome.

We report the association between finger agnosia and gesture imitation deficits in a right-handed, right-hemisphere damaged patient with Gerstmann's syndrome (GS), a neuropsychological syndrome characterized by finger and toe agnosia, left-right disorientation and dyscalculia. No language deficits were found. The patient showed a gestural imitation deficit that specifically involved finger movements and postures. The association between finger recognition and imitation deficits suggests that both static and dynamic aspects of finger representations are impaired in GS. We suggest that GS is a d

Gesture development: a review for clinical and research practices.

The aim of this article is to provide clinicians and researchers a comprehensive overview of the development and functions of gesture in childhood and in select populations with developmental language impairments. Of significance is the growing body of evidence that gesture enhances, not hinders, language development. In both normal and impaired populations, gesture and language development parallel each other and share underlying symbolic abilities. Gesture serves several functions, including those of communication, compensation, and transition to spoken language. In clinical practice, gestur

The emotional responses to the sounds of organic affective tactile gestures.

Affective touch offers numerous benefits for touchers and touchees, including emotional regulation. However, individuals are engaging in affective touch increasingly less, in part due to the digitalization of experiences, which motivates the question of whether the emotional benefits of affective touch can be conveyed in alternative ways, such as through different sensory modalities. With this in mind, we investigated the emotional responses to the auditory signals produced by organic affective touch gestures. In particular, participants in our five online experiments evaluated different sound

The Use of Hand Gestures (Hastas) in Bharatanatyam for Creative Aging.

Bharatanatyam is a traditional Indian dance form that involves the use of facial expressions and body movements to tell stories. A key aspect of Bharatanatyam is the use of hand gestures, also known as hastas, which are used to communicate with specificity and precision. Hastas are symbols, and along with facial expressions and body movements that are contextually relevant, they help to communicate narratives. I am a neuroscientist and have been immersed in Bharatanatyam for 25 years; true to the tradition of the form that emphasizes lifelong scholarship and immersion, I continue to learn from

Immersive Robot Teleoperation Based on User Gestures in Mixed Reality Space.

Recently, research has been conducted on mixed reality (MR), which provides immersive visualization and interaction experiences, and on mapping human motions directly onto a robot in a mixed reality (MR) space to achieve a high level of immersion. However, even though the robot is mapped onto the MR space, their surrounding environment is often not mapped sufficiently; this makes it difficult to comfortably perform tasks that require precise manipulation of the objects that are difficult to see from the human perspective. Therefore, we propose a system that allows users to operate a robot in r

Interaction between articulatory gestures and inner speech in a counting task.

Interaction between covert and overt orofacial gestures has been poorly studied apart from old and rather qualitative experiments. The question deserves special interest in the context of the debate between auditory and motor theories of speech perception, where dual tasks may be of great interest. It is shown here that dynamic mandible and lips movement produced by a participant result in strong and stable perturbations to an inner speech counting task that has to be realized at the same time, while static orofacial configurations and static or dynamic manual actions produce no perturbation.

The meaning of meaningless gestures: a study of visuo-imitative apraxia.

In two patients with damage to the inferior portion of the left angular gyrus severely defective imitation of meaningless gestures contrasted with preserved performance of meaningful gestures to verbal command and with preserved imitation of meaningful gestures. In one patient the imitation deficit was restricted to the imitation of hand positions while imitation of finger configurations was normal. In both patients replication of the hand positions on a mannikin was as defective as imitation on themselves. This pattern of preserved and impaired performances is incompatible with two-stage mode

Spontaneous use of gestures during vocabulary testing in toddlers with cochlear implants.

In typically developing (TD) children, early gestures emerge before first words and predict spoken language. Language development in children with cochlear implants (CI) vary due to factors such as implantation age and exposure to spoken language, but variation is largely unexplained. Little is known about gestures in children with CI and how this is related to vocabulary. In this study, spontaneous use of gestures during assessment of receptive and expressive vocabulary was examined and related to vocabulary test results in ten children with CI, aged 25-39 months. The results were compared to

Decoding four hand gestures with a single bipolar pair of electrocorticography electrodes.

Objective.Electrocorticography (ECoG) based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) can be used to restore communication in individuals with locked-in syndrome. In motor-based BCIs, the number of degrees-of-freedom, and thus the speed of the BCI, directly depends on the number of classes that can be discriminated from the neural activity in the sensorimotor cortex. When considering minimally invasive BCI implants, the size of the subdural ECoG implant must be minimized without compromising the number of degrees-of-freedom.Approach.Here we investigated if four hand gestures could be decoded using a si

A third-person perspective on co-speech action gestures in Parkinson's disease.

A combination of impaired motor and cognitive function in Parkinson's disease (PD) can impact on language and communication, with patients exhibiting a particular difficulty processing action verbs. Co-speech gestures embody a link between action and language and contribute significantly to communication in healthy people. Here, we investigated how co-speech gestures depicting actions are affected in PD, in particular with respect to the visual perspective-or the viewpoint - they depict. Gestures are closely related to mental imagery and motor simulations, but people with PD may be impaired in

Lateralization of brain activity during motor planning of proximal and distal gestures.

Praxis functions are predominantly processed by the left hemisphere. However, limb apraxia is found in less than 50% of patients with left hemisphere damage, and also, although infrequently, in patients with right hemisphere damage. We studied brain representation of preparation/planning of tool-use pantomime separating the gestures involving mostly distal limb control (e.g., using scissors) from those involving proximal limb control (e.g., hammering). During the fMRI scan transitive pantomimes were performed with the dominant and the non-dominant hand by right-handed healthy subjects. Random

Coverbal gestures in the recovery from severe fluent aphasia: a pilot study.

UNLABELLED: This post hoc study investigated coverbal gesture patterns in two persons with chronic Wernicke's aphasia. They had both received therapy focusing on multimodal communication therapy, and their pre- and post-therapy verbal and gestural skills in face-to-face conversational interaction with their speech therapist were analysed by administering a partial barrier Referential Communication Task (RCT). The RCT sessions were reviewed in order to analyse: (a) participant coverbal gesture occurrence and types when in speaker role, (b) distribution of iconic gestures in the RCT communicativ

Smoking-related gestures and anxiety: a preliminary study in treatment-seeking smokers.

BACKGROUND: The act of smoking is not solely driven by nicotine dependence, but also involves behavioral and sensorimotor components that may independently contribute to addiction maintenance. Among these, gestural rituals such as holding and bringing the cigarette to the mouth may play a role in emotional regulation and self-soothing, particularly in individuals with anxiety. This study aimed to explore the relationship between smoking-related gestures, nicotine dependence, and anxiety symptoms in a sample of smokers seeking addiction treatment. METHODS: A total of 81 treatment-seeking smoke

The mechanomyographic dataset of hand gestures harvested using an accelerometer and gyroscope.

Mechanomyography (MMG) datasets are crucial due to their unique characteristics, non-invasive techniques, fewer required sensors, improved signal-to-noise ratio, lightweight equipment, and no need for skin preparation, unlike some other techniques. This paper introduces a mechanomyography (MMG) signal dataset intended for application in human-computer interaction (HCI) research. The dataset is obtained from integrated sensor data, capturing mechanical signals from muscle activity via the accelerometer, augmented by the gyroscope for motion analysis. The dataset comprises 6-axis accelerometer a

LipBengal: Pioneering Bengali lip-reading dataset for pronunciation mapping through lip gestures.

The LipBengal dataset represents a significant advancement in Bengali lip-reading and visual speech recognition research, poised to drive future applications and technological progress. Despite Bengali's global status as the seventh most spoken language with approximately 265 million speakers, linguistically rich and widely spoken languages like Bengali have been largely overlooked by the research community. LipBengal fills this gap by offering a pioneering dataset tailored for Bengali lip-reading, comprising visual data from 150 speakers across 54 classes, encompassing Bengali phonemes, alpha
