A comparative histologic study on the healing process after tissue transection. I. Carbon dioxide laser and electromicrosurgery.

The present study was undertaken to evaluate and compare histologic parameters of wound healing subsequent to a standard uterine incision with carbon dioxide laser and electromicrosurgery in the rat model. The following histologic parameters were assessed and scored: scar width; amount of particulate carbon and necrotic debris; number of polymorphonuclear leukocytes, lymphocytes, histiocytes, and giant cells; and extent of edema, exudate, and collagen in the scar. The incisions were evaluated on postoperative days 0, 4, 7, 14, and 21. The ensuing scars were similar with respect to scar width a

[Pneumatosis intestinalis--histology, immunocytochemistry and new theory of morphogenesis].

Based on the light microscopical and immunocytochemical findings in two cases of pneumatosis intestinalis, a new theory is advanced on the morphogenesis of the cysts that can be observed in this disease. The cavities identifiable in both cases in the submucosa of the small intestine and of the colon, respectively, were partially lined by histiocytes and foreign-body giant cells. Most of the lumina found in the subserosa of the stomach, small intestine and colon had an identical aspect. In addition, there were numerous true cysts here with a narrow, single-layered cells seam, showing the immuno

Capsular synovial-like hyperplasia around mammary implants similar to detritic synovitis. A morphologic and immunohistochemical study of 15 cases.

Formation of a fibrous envelope around the implant, a so-called capsule with resultant contracture of the prosthesis, is an occasional complication of augmentation mammoplasty. The capsulectomy specimen contains mature scar tissue with mononuclear cells, histiocytes, and foreign body giant cells. We studied 15 capsulectomy specimens. Seven showed a striking form of papillary villous synovial-like hyperplasia similar to detritic synovitis, a form of proliferative synovitis caused by orthopedic prosthetic devices. There was an accompanying infiltration of the subcapsular surface by mononuclear c

Quantitative comparison of the histological effects of particulate polymethylmethacrylate versus polyethylene in the rabbit tibia.

Fourteen mature female New Zealand White rabbits underwent implantation of Simplex polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) powder or particulate (average 67 microns) ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) through a drill hole in the proximal right tibia. The left tibia functioned as a prepared but nonimplanted control. Animals were killed after 16 weeks. Histological examination of the bone-implant interface in the particulate PMMA group disclosed a florid foreign-body reaction with the presence of giant cells and histiocytes. The particulate UHMWPE group demonstrated positively birefringent U

Granulomatous inflammation of the heart.

Morphologic characteristics of granulomatous inflammation in the heart and pericardium are discussed. In rheumatic fever, two types of myocardial lesion are present--a nonspecific myocarditis and a specific lesion characterized by granulomas known as Aschoff's nodules. The latter undergo a cycle of development and resolution; in their mature stage, they contain Aschoff's cells which are uni- or multinucleated histiocytes with a serrated nuclear chromatin bar. Ultrastructural studies do not suggest a relationship between these cells and cardiac or smooth muscle cells. In metabolic disorders, gr

RANKL in the osteolysis of AES total ankle replacement implants.

Peri-implant tissue reactions in failed total ankle replacement (TAR) are characterized by early developing peri-implant osteolysis. The hypothesis of the study was that this reaction is mediated by receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL). Samples of peri-prosthetic tissues from failed TAR implants were stained for macrophages, RANKL, its receptor RANK and osteoprotegerin (OPG), and compared to control samples. The failed TAR implants were surrounded by implant capsule, synovial lining-like interface membrane or necrotic tissues. Infiltrating scavenger receptor I positive C

Muramidase content of cells in human granulomatous reactions.

The muramidase content of reactive cells in the lesions of human foreign body reactions, lepromatous and tuberculoid leprosy, sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, and granulomatous hepatitis, was assessed using specific anti-human muramidase antiserum and a peroxidase-anti-peroxidase marker system. Epithelioid and giant cells in sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, granulomatous hepatitis, and tuberculoid leprosy all showed the presence of muramidase in their cytoplasm. The muramidase content of macrophages in foreign body reactions and lepromatous leprosy varied and most multinucleate cells in these lesions gave

Sporadic cerebral amyloid angiopathy with giant cell reaction.

We report a case of intracerebral hemorrhages due to sporadic cerebral amyloid angiopathy in a 43-year-old male with a luxuriant giant cell reaction. The amyloid was resistant to potassium permanganate-sulfuric acid oxidation and reacted with an antiserum to synthetic beta-protein. The distribution and histologic characteristics of the multinucleated giant cell reaction suggest that it represents a foreign-body reaction rather than giant cell arteritis.

Giant cells around bone biomaterials: Osteoclasts or multi-nucleated giant cells?

UNLABELLED: Recently accumulating evidence has put into question the role of large multinucleated giant cells (MNGCs) around bone biomaterials. While cells derived from the monocyte/macrophage lineage are one of the first cell types in contact with implanted biomaterials, it was originally thought that specifically in bone tissues, all giant cells were bone-resorbing osteoclasts whereas foreign body giant cells (FBGCs) were found associated with a connective tissue foreign body reaction resulting in fibrous encapsulation and/or material rejection. Despite the great majority of bone grafting ma

A rare case of cholesterol granuloma in the anterior mediastinum.

Cholesterol granulomas are reactant lesions that develop in response to cholesterol crystals and foreign body giant cells. They are a commonly described benign condition affecting the middle ear and paranasal sinuses, however have been reported in various sites within the body. We describe a rare case of an incidental cholesterol granuloma in the anterior mediastinum of a cardiac surgical patient.

Foreign body or hypersensitivity granuloma of the inner ear after cochlear implantation: one possible cause of a soft failure?

HYPOTHESIS: A tissue response in the form of foreign body or a hypersensitivity reaction to cochlear implantation is common and may be one possible cause of a soft failure of cochlear implantation. BACKGROUND: After a successful cochlear implantation, delayed failure may occur. The causes of a "soft" failure, that is, one in which device malfunction cannot be proven, are unknown. METHODS: The histopathology of the temporal bones of a patient who, in life, had experienced a soft failure after cochlear implantation was described. In addition, the temporal bones of 8 other subjects who, in life

[Occurrence of granulomatous appendicitis in rabbits].

Granulomatous appendicitis was observed in all of the 45 Japanese white rabbits examined. Histologically, multiple microgranulomas were accompanied with foreign body giant cells and focal calcifications in lymph nodules of appendix. Foreign body giant cells contained hair coat and larvae of Passalurus ambiguus. In addition, the sacculus rotundus and mesenteric lymph nodes were affected with the same lesions. PAS- and Gram- positive bacilli were phagocytized in the microgranulomas and macrophages. They were also stained positively with the immunoperoxidase method for the auto-sera of rabbits. I

Histopathological Insights into Peri-Implant Mucosal Inflammation: Comparative Analysis of Peri-Implant Mucositis and Peri-Implantitis as Distinct Disease Entities with Emphasis on Foreign Body Reactions.

Peri-implant diseases, including peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis, constitute significant human health challenges that threaten implant longevity despite advances in implant medicine. These inflammatory disease entities compromise peri-implant tissue integrity and oral wellbeing, with growing public health relevance due to the widespread use of dental implants. Increasing evidence implicates tribocorrosion-induced titanium particle release in provoking foreign body-mediated inflammation, facilitating disease progression from a reversible inflammatory illness to an irreversible destr

Microcrystalline Cellulose Aspiration Presenting as Interstitial Lung Disease Diagnosed via Transbronchial Lung Cryobiopsy.

Chronic occult aspiration is an underrecognized cause of airway-centered and interstitial lung disease and can mimic inflammatory or fibrotic pulmonary disorders. Microcrystalline cellulose, a widely used pharmaceutical excipient, can provoke a foreign body giant cell reaction when aspirated into the lower respiratory tract. Because aspirated material may be focal, it can be missed on small biopsy specimens, delaying diagnosis and leading to inappropriate treatment. We report a case of a 54-year-old woman with progressive exertional hypoxemia and diffuse ground-glass opacities initially concer

Cell fusion dynamics: mechanisms of multinucleation in osteoclasts and macrophages.

Cell-cell fusion is a vital biological process where the membranes of two or more cells merge to form a syncytium. This phenomenon is critical in various physiological and pathological contexts, including embryonic development, tissue repair, immune responses, and the progression of several diseases. Osteoclasts, which are cells from the monocyte/macrophage lineage responsible for bone resorption, have enhanced functionality due to cell fusion. Additionally, other multinucleated giant cells (MGCs) also arise from the fusion of monocytes and macrophages, typically during chronic inflammation an
