Gingival fibromatosis is an enlargement of the gingival tissue, which may be localized or generalized, characterized by hypertrophy and proliferation of the connective tissue, predominantly Type I collagen, with occasional presence of an increased number of cells, supposedly fibroblasts. Gingival fibromatosis occurs more commonly as a side- effect of systemic drugs, such as phenytoin, cyclosporine, nifedipine, or due to hereditary factors. However, in some cases, it is idiopathic. We report one such case in 30 -year- old - female who presented with a complaint of swelling of gums since 2 month

Cyclosporin A (CsA) is used in the treatment of patients undergoing renal transplantation. There are a number of side effects associated with its use. In particular, the gingival overgrowth represents the most important in the oral cavity. The authors present a case of bilateral mandibular cysts in an 8-year-old boy, treated with CsA after renal transplantation. The genesis of the mandibular cysts might be associated with the combined use of CsA and a calcium channel blocker post-transplantation. CsA-induced gingival overgrowth might contribute to cysts by two mechanisms: interference with con

Dentists have specialised knowledge of the orofacial region and are well placed to identify the signs of general disease which occur in their child patients. A case report is presented in which a patient was diagnosed as suffering from I-Cell disease (mucolipidosis II). The provisional diagnosis of this genetic abnormality was initially made from the presenting gingival appearance. The identification of the oral abnormalities made an important contribution to the diagnosis of this fatal condition.

Fibromatosis is a group of disorders characterized by infiltrating fibroblastic proliferation. Among them Juvenile hyaline fibromatosis (J.H.F) is a rare, progressive, crippling autosomal recessive disorder diagnosed based on the characteristic clinicopathological findings of generalized cutaneous nodular lesions, gingival hypertrophy, flexion contractures of large joints with osteolytic lesions, and proliferating fibroblasts set within a hyalinized stroma. This disorder commonly manifests in childhood with family history of consanguinity and in siblings. A case of seven year old boy born to c

The Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome is a disturbance in the development of the mesodermal and ectodermal tissues occurring in utero. It is characterized by the clinical triad of unilateral soft tissue and bone hypertrophy, varicosities and hemangiomas. For dentists the orofacial manifestations of the syndrome are interesting: unilateral hypertrophy of the maxilla and mandible, mandibular joint and alveolar processes and tooth germs. In addition, the gingival margins are thickened, eruption is premature and there is marked facial asymmetry.

Gingival enlargements are a common clinical finding and most represent a reactive hyperplasia as a direct result of plaque related inflammatory gingival disease. These generally respond to conservative tissue management and attention to plaque control. However, a small group are distinct from these and whilst they also represent a reactive tissue response, this occurs at the level of the superficial fibres of the periodontal ligament. These epulides grow from under the free gingival margin and not as a result of a primary inflammatory gingival enlargement. This distinct aetiopathogenesis separ

Juvenile hyaline fibromatosis (JHF) is a rare progressive autosomal recessive disease that is characterised by papulonodular skin lesions, soft tissue masses, joint contractures, gingival hypertrophy and osteolytic bone lesions. We present an 18-month-old boy with JHF. This case demonstrates that JHF should be considered in the differential diagnosis when multiple subcutaneous nodules are observed in the face, head and neck. Gum hypertrophy with palatal nodules is unusual in JHF.

The authors report the cases of three male patients, aged 36, 54 and 52 years, who developed gingival hypertrophy during treatment with nifedipine at a dose of 40 mg/daily. Hypertrophy was the same as that observed in patients treated with anti-convulsive or cytostatic drugs, and may probably be due to interference with calcium ions and local factors. Full recovery was achieved by suspending nifedipine treatment in all patients.

Drug-induced gingival overgrowth (DIGO) is an undesirable effect resulting from the therapy of one of the three groups of drugs: phenytoin, calcium channel blockers, and cyclosporine A (CsA). It is caused by a fibrous overgrowth leading to gingivitis, periodontitis, and even tooth loss. Possible consequences include tooth decay worsening, pain and difficulty in eating, bleeding gums, and bad breath. The pathomechanism of the hypertrophy is unknown, but there is a correlation between insufficient oral hygiene and the severity of this phenomenon. The gender and age predilection of gingival hyper

A 5.1/2-year-old girl presented with an isolated diffuse gingival hypertrophy and an abnormal mobility of teeth (alveolysis on roentgenograms). The diagnosis of a plasmacytoma was suspected after pathological and immunohistological examinations of a gingival biopsy. Plasma cells were secreting monoclonal immunoglobulins (heavy chain IgA and light chain lambda), quite different from polyclonal secretions of a reactive plasmacytosis. The electron microscopic study demonstrated polymorphic plasma cells (well-differentiated, dysplastic or undifferentiated cells). The isolated nature of this tumor

Cyclosporine A constitutes an immunosuppressive medication administered against various autoimmune and autoinflammatory disorders as well as against graft versus host disease. Its most well-known oral adverse effect is gingival hyperplasia. The aim of this study is to report a persistent case of a patient with lichen planopilaris with alopecia treated with cyclosporine leading to the manifestation of gingival hypertrophy. A female patient aged 38 years old was referred to the Department of Oral Medicine/Pathology, Dental School, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece complaining about gu

More than 50% of pediatric malignancies are leukemias or lymphomas. Oral changes associated with these conditions include: gingival oozing, petechiae, hematomas, ulcerations, gingival pain, gingival hypertrophy, mucosal pallor, pharyngitis, and lymphadenopathy. Current medical management for patients with hematologic malignancies includes chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, bone marrow transplantation or a combination of these modalities. Nearly 60% of patients diagnosed today with malignancy will be long-term survivors. Patients undergoing orthodontic treatment when a diagnosis of malignancy is

BACKGROUND: DIGO or drug-induced gingival overgrowth occurs as a side effect of certain drugs. Until now, the etiology of drug-induced gingival overgrowth is not clearly understood. Among the calcium channel blockers, nifedipine has been shown to be most frequently associated with drug-induced gingival hyperplasia. Amlodipine is a comparatively newer calcium channel blocker that with a longer duration of action and lesser side effects as compared to nifedipine. There are only certain case reports of amlodipine-induced gum hyperplasia.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of amlodipine-induced

OBJECTIVES: Mouth breathing is an important health problem, commonly encountered in children. In children, adeno-tonsillar hypertrophy is the main reason causing partial or complete upper airway obstruction and reduction in airflow. This study aimed to determine the oral health status of children aged 3-15 years, with mouth breathing who were due to have surgery for adeno-tonsillar hypertrophy and referred to the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at Children's Hospital of a University in Ankara, Turkey between January-July 2015.
METHODS: The approval of the Non-Interventional Clinical Researc

BACKGROUND: Ligneous periodontitis or gingivitis is a rare periodontal disorder, secondary to plasminogen deficiency, characterised by nodular gingival enlargements and progressive destructive membranous periodontal disease.
CASE REPORT: We describe the early and successful dental management of a case of ligneous gingivitis secondary to plasminogen deficiency in a 6-year- old girl. The patient was referred because of a nodular asymptomatic gingival hypertrophy with ulceration around the eruption site of tooth 36, without any detectable tooth mobility. After non-surgical management of the lesi

BACKGROUND: Hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) is rare in clinical practice, and the long-term results of the combined orthodontic-periodontal treatment of HGF are rarely reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: This study reports for the first time the results of seven years of follow-up in a seven-year-old girl with HGF. The diagnosis was confirmed by clinical signs, family history and histopathological examination. First, periodontal scaling and oral hygiene reinforcement were performed regularly in the mixed dentition stage. Next, gingivoplasty was performed on the permanent dentition. Two months
