BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a microvascular complication of diabetes characterized by damage to the retina's neurons and blood vessels. Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) has demonstrated neuroprotective properties, however, its specific mechanisms in DR remain incompletely understood. This research aims to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of GBE in DR.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A diabetic rat model was induced with streptozotocin (STZ) and divided into control, diabetic, and GBE-treated groups. Retinal tissues of each group were analyzed using histology, TUNEL staining, and immunofluores

Glaucoma is a neurodegenerative eye disease that results in retinal ganglion cell loss and ultimately loss of vision. Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is the most common known risk factor for retinal ganglion cell damage and visual field loss, and the only modifiable risk factor proven to reduce the development and progression of glaucoma. This has greatly influenced our approach and assessment in terms of diagnosis and treatment. However, as many as ≥50% of patients with progressive vision loss from primary open angle glaucoma without IOP elevation (≤22 mm Hg) have been reported in the Uni

Thrombosis and thromboembolic occlusions of major and minor blood vessels are a major complication in various peripheral vascular diseases. Antiplatelet agents (APA), key tools in the treatment of atherothrombosis, therefore became a mainstay medication for a wide range of vascular diseases. Cilostazol and Ginkgo biloba extract (GB), commonly used remedies for peripheral arterial disease, inhibit platelet aggregation with distinct therapeutic mechanisms. In this study, we have investigated if GB can potentiate the antiplatelet effects of cilostazol to explore the utility of combination therapy

Ischemia and the metabolic disorder it entails would seem to be the pathogenic mechanism behind acute cochlear deafness, irrespective of the triggering process. The prognosis is entirely dependent on the rapid initiation of an effective treatment. At the end of a double-blind therapeutic trial comparing Ginkgo biloba extract and a standard alpha blocker (nicergoline), a significant recovery was observed in both therapeutic groups, but improvement was distinctly better in the Ginkgo biloba group.

Idiopathic cyclic oedema is a frequent and often unrecognized condition in young women. It is characterized by water and sodium retention with secondary hyperaldosteronism due to capillary hyperpermeability. Treatment is not easy. It includes spironolactone, sometimes sympathomimetics and hygienic-dietetic measures. Thiazide diuretics and laxatives must be avoided. Correcting the capillary defect is of paramount importance. This defect is detected and measured by Landis' labelled albumin test. The authors have tried Ginkgo biloba extract administered either orally or by intravenous infusion. F

Myopia is becoming more common across the world, necessitating the development of preventive methods. We investigated the activity of early growth response 1 (EGR-1) protein and discovered that Ginkgo biloba extracts (GBEs) activated EGR-1 in vitro. In vivo, C57BL/6 J mice were fed either normal or 0.0667% GBEs (200 mg/kg) mixed chow (n = 6 each), and myopia was induced with - 30 diopter (D) lenses from 3 to 6 weeks of age. Refraction and axial length were measured by an infrared photorefractor and an SD-OCT system, respectively. In lens-induced myopia mice, oral GBEs significantly improved re

Ginkgo biloba extracts (GBEs) have been recommended to improve cognitive function and to prevent cognitive decline, but earlier evidence was inconclusive. Here, we evaluated all systematic reviews of GBEs for prevention of cognitive decline, and intervention of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia. Six databases from their inception to September 2015 were searched. Ten systematic reviews were identified, including reviews about Alzheimer's disease (n = 3), about vascular dementia (n = 1), about both Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia (n = 2), about Alzheimer's disease, vascular

Extracts from the leaves of Ginkgo biloba are among the most widely used phytotherapeutics. Some alkylphenols (ginkgolic acids, cardanols and cardols) have been described as potentially hazardous constituents in Ginkgo extracts. Accordingly, a requirement for a maximum concentration of ginkgolic acids has been proposed in the UE and US pharmacopoeias Ginkgo monographs establishing a limit value of 5 ppm. A novel HPLC-UV method, developed by the use of HPLC-APCI-MS HPLC-DAD techniques and allowing the identification of ginkgolic acids and related phenols, is described. The new analytical method

The technology of supercritical CO2 fluid extraction for ginkgolic acids in the epicarp of Ginkgo biloba L. was studied. The effect of pressure, temperature and extraction time on the yield of the ginkgolic acids was explored. The optimum conditions for supercritical CO2 fluid extraction was 30 MPa, 45 degrees C, extraction time 6 h and the flow rate of CO2 2L/min. The ginkgolic acids were determined by HPLC. Supercritical CO2 fluid extraction exceled the traditional solvent extraction in high yield, high purification and easy operation.

Ginkgo biloba L. leaf extract (GBE) has been added in many commercial herbal formulations such as EGb 761 and Shuxuening Injection to treat cardiovascular diseases and stroke worldwide. However, the comprehensive effects of GBE on cerebral ischemia remained unclear. Using a novel GBE (nGBE), which consists of all the compounds of traditional (t)GBE and one new compound, pinitol, we investigated its effect on inflammation, white matter integrity, and long-term neurological function in an experimental stroke model. Both transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) and distal MCAO were condu

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative illnesses, and yet, no workable treatments have been discovered to prevent or reverse AD. Curcumin (CUR), the major polyphenolic compound of turmeric (Curcuma longa) rhizomes, and Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) are natural substances derived from conventional Chinese herbs that have long been shown to provide therapeutic advantages for AD. The uptake of curcumin into the brain is severely restricted by its low ability to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Meanwhile, GBE has been shown to improve BBB permeability. The presen

The usage of the chemotherapeutic agent methotrexate (MTX) was associated with hepatotoxicity that minimized its clinical use. The Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) was used before to alleviate the MTX-induced liver injury through its antioxidant activity. This work was carried out to elucidate other molecular hepatoprotective mechanisms of GBE via examining the IL-6/STAT3 pathway in addition to the miRNA-21 expression in hepatic tissue. Sprague Dawley rats were allocated into four groups: normal control (NC); Ginkgo biloba extract control (GBEC); methotrexate (MTX); and Ginkgo biloba extract and me

Infection by enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7 (EHEC) is a worldwide problem, and there is no effective therapy. Biofilm formation is closely related to EHEC infection and is also a mechanism of antimicrobial resistance. Antibiofilm screening of 560 purified phytochemicals against EHEC showed that ginkgolic acids C15:1 and C17:1 at 5μg/ml and Ginkgo biloba extract at 100μg/ml significantly inhibited EHEC biofilm formation on the surfaces of polystyrene and glass, and on nylon membranes. Importantly, at their working concentrations, ginkgolic acids and G. biloba extract did not affect
