Advanced Eales' Disease With Neovascular Glaucoma at First Presentation.

Eales' disease is an idiopathic vasculitis that affects the peripheral retina. It is characterized by recurrent vitreous hemorrhage as a complication of retinal neovascularization. It is more prevalent in India and affects young males. Here, we present a patient with neovascular glaucoma as a rare first presentation of Eales' disease. This is a 24-year-old Indian male, who complained of a sudden decrease in vision in the left eye over less than 24 hours, along with frontal headache and eye pain for the last three weeks. Ocular examination revealed peripheral retinal ischemia in the right eye,

An atypical case of neurosarcoidosis presenting with neovascular glaucoma.

BACKGROUND: Sarcoidosis, a multisystem, granulomatous disorder, sometimes manifests with a neuro-ophthalmic subtype. The latter can pose a diagnostic challenge, especially when ocular symptoms appear before systemic involvement, as the clinical picture then can be non-specific and systemic laboratory and standard imaging investigations can be negative. FINDINGS: A 71-year-old woman presented with a 4-month history of sudden-onset visual loss in the left eye. Slit lamp examination revealed anterior chamber cells, iris, and angle neovascularization. Fundoscopy showed a pale edematous optic nerv

Outcomes of treatment of neovascular glaucoma with intravitreal bevacizumab.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To evaluate the course of treatment and outcomes of neovascular glaucoma (NVG) treated with intravitreal bevacizumab. METHODS: The study is a retrospective, non-comparative, consecutive, interventional case series. Demographic data, past ocular history, cause of NVG and anterior chamber angle status were recorded. Visual acuity (VA), intraocular pressure (IOP), number of IOP-lowering medications and type of treatment administered were recorded at the time of NVG diagnosis and at follow-up intervals. Treatment-related complications and reasons for vision loss were recorded. R

Intravitreal bevacizumab (Avastin) in the treatment of neovascular glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To describe a case series of neovascular glaucoma (NVG) caused by central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) that was treated with intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB; Avastin). DESIGN: Retrospective interventional case series. METHODS: Six consecutive patients with NVG and a refractory, symptomatic elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP) and pronounced anterior segment congestion received IVB (1.25 mg/0.05 ml). Diode laser cyclophotocoagulation was carried out only if pressure was controlled insufficiently by topical medication. Follow-up examinations occurred at four to 16 weeks. RESULTS: I

[Anti-VEGF drugs in the treatment of neovascular glaucoma].

Neovascular glaucoma (NVG) is the most frequently occurring type of secondary glaucoma characterized by significant decrease in visual functions. Its pathogenesis consists mainly of ischemia of the posterior segment, which is often secondary to proliferative diabetic retinopathy or ischemic central retinal vein occlusion. Development of neovascularization in the eye is associated with processes that change homeostatic balance between proangiogenic (vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)) and antiangiogenic (pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF)) factors. The aim of the therapy is to redu

[Case of metastatic intraocular malignant lymphoma with neovascular glaucoma].

BACKGROUND: It is relatively rare to encounter a case of neovascular glaucoma induced by malignant lymphoma metastasized into the eyeball. CASE: A 79-year-old woman initially visited our ophthalmology clinic with the chief complaint of blurring of vision in the left eye which was affected by neovascular glaucoma. She had a history of systemic malignant lymphoma, first diagnosed from skin biopsy and treated to complete remission 3 years previously. A metastatic brain lesion, detected 2 months before her initial visit to our clinic, was cured by radiotherapy. FINDINGS: By ultrasound biomicrosc

The microendoscope for ciliary process photocoagulation in neovascular glaucoma.

The safety and efficacy in endoscopic ciliary body photocoagulation was evaluated in 6 patients with intractable neovascular glaucoma secondary to proliferative diabetic retinopathy. After a mean follow-up of 8 weeks, the mean intraocular pressure (IOP) decreased from 39.2 +/- 5.0 mmHg preoperatively t o 19.5 +/- 3.8 mmHg postoperatively (p < 0.05, Wilcoxon signed-ranks test). Although intense inflammation was observed as an immediate postoperative complication, fibrin, eye pain and phthisis did not develop in any of the patients.

Histopathological findings of X-linked retinoschisis with neovascular glaucoma.

BACKGROUND: X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS) is rarely complicated by neovascular glaucoma. Only a few reports of XLRS histopathological findings with neovascular glaucoma have been published. METHODS: A 41-year-old man with XLRS complicated by neovascular glaucoma in his left eye was examined with electroretinography, B-scan, ultrasound biomicroscopy and computed tomography. He was examined by ophthalmoscopy and fluorescein angiography in the other eye. An enucleation was performed in his left eye due to uncontrollable high intraocular pressure and persistent ocular pain. We examined the enucle

The influence of etiology on surgical outcomes in neovascular glaucoma.

BACKGROUND: The authors sought to evaluate visual outcomes in patients with varying etiologies of neovascular glaucoma (NVG), who were treated with glaucoma drainage devices (GDD). METHODS: This was a retrospective case series of patients at a large academic teaching institution who had surgical intervention for neovascular glaucoma between September 2011 and May 2019. Eyes were included if there was documented neovascularization of the iris/angle with an intraocular pressure (IOP) > 21 mmHg at presentation. Eyes must also have been treated with surgical intervention that included a GDD. Prim

Unusual Association of Inverse Retinitis Pigmentosa, Scleromalacia, and Neovascular Glaucoma.

A 31-year-old woman with inverse retinitis pigmentosa presented with severe ocular pain and ingrained visual loss. Biomicroscopy revealed a large scleromalacia area above the superior limbus, minimal Descemet's membrane folds, aqueous flare, rubeosis iridis, and mature cataract. Intraocular pressure was 39 mmHg, and the clinical picture was consistent with neovascular glaucoma. After immediate medication to reduce ocular discomfort, an anterior chamber bevacizumab injection was performed. At 1 week post-injection, the rubeosis iridis had largely regressed and intraocular pressure was 21 mmHg.

Neovascular glaucoma in a child: an unusual presentation of medulloepithelioma.

A healthy 12 month old infant without significant medical history presented with left eye redness for one week. Ophthalmic examination showed elevated intraocular pressure with iris neovascularization in the affected eye with increased optic nerve cupping. Scleral depression revealed a ciliary body mass in the supratemporal quadrant. A large, non-pigmented, vascular mass was noted; biopsy results showed multilayered cords, tubules, and sheets resembling primitive medullary epithelium arising from the ciliary body. The patient was diagnosed with medulloepithelioma. The patient underwent enuclea

Essential thrombocythemia and central retinal vein occlusion with neovascular glaucoma.

PURPOSE: We report a case of unilateral central retinal vein occlusion resulting from essential thrombocythemia, a rare myeloproliferative disorder with abnormally increased platelet count. METHODS: A 59-year-old man had central retinal vein occlusion in the left eye as the initial sign of essential thrombocythemia. He later developed neovascular glaucoma and optic disk neovascularization. RESULTS: Laser panretinal photocoagulation, goniophotocoagulation, glaucoma medications, and control of the platelet count were effective treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Early thrombocythemia is associated with s

Painful eye in neovascular glaucoma and its treatment with cryocoagulation.

The author summarizes the present knowledge concerning the treatment of pain in neovascular glaucoma. The treatment of the pain is very closely connected with a good compensation of the intraocular pressure. The author did not find a correlation between the degree of the elevated intraocular pressure and the ocular pain. He compares the results of the treatment of ocular pain in neovascular glaucoma with cyclo-cryocoagulation as a single method with those of the method of trans-scleral panretinal cryocoagulation in combination with cyclo-cryocoagulation performed in one session.
