[Population growth and global warming: impacts on tsetse and trypanosomoses in West Africa].

Demographic evolution, climatic change and economical development that happened in West Africa during the XXth century had a lot of consequences on human settlement and landscape. These changes have in turn an impact on the pathogenic system of human and animal trypanosomoses. Since last century, the northern tsetse distribution limit has shifted towards the south, probably due to a decrease in rainfall combined to the impact of human pressure. Sleeping sickness (SS) foci have also shifted from the savannah areas (where there is no more SS) to the forest and mangrove areas of West Africa, but

Halocarbon emissions from the United States and Mexico and their global warming potential.

We use recent aircraft measurements of a comprehensive suite of anthropogenic halocarbons, carbon monoxide (CO), and related tracers to place new constraints on North American halocarbon emissions and quantify their global warming potential. Using a chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem) we find that the ensemble of observations are consistent with our prior best estimate of the U.S. anthropogenic CO source, but suggest a 30% underestimate of Mexican emissions. We develop an optimized CO emission inventory on this basis and quantify halocarbon emissions from their measured enhancements relative

Spread of ticks and tick-borne diseases in Germany due to global warming.

Tick-transmitted diseases like tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme Borreliosis have been well known in Germany for decades. Global climate changes may influence the emergence and reemergence of diseases. Ongoing research now gives an additional focus on other tick-borne pathogens such as Coxiella burnetii, Rickettsia conorii, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Babesia spp., the causative agents of Q-fever, Mediterranean spotted fever, Anaplasmosis and Babesiosis, respectively. The epidemiology of these pathogens was investigated on ticks as well as on rodents, the main hosts. Therefore adults of Derma

Standards development of global warming gas species: methane, nitrous oxide, trichlorofluoromethane, and dichlorodifluoromethane.

Environmental scientists from federal agencies, such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and academia have long suspected that increasing anthropogenic inputs of various trace gases into the atmosphere can cause changes in the earth's climate and protective ozone layer. Nitrous oxide and methane, cited in the Kyoto Protocol, as well astrichlorofluoromethane (CFC-11) and dichlorodifluoromethane (CFC-12), cited in the Montreal Protocol, are all greenhouse gases and are implicated in the destruction of the stratospheric ozone layer. The lack of national standards prompt

Global warming intensifies eutrophication and oxygen depletion in marine environments; a Danish perspective.

Climate change caused by anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases leads to ocean warming with strong effects on marine ecosystems. However, there has been limited attention on synergism between ocean warming and eutrophication. Danish authorities have in recent years focused on reducing nutrient inputs from land to alleviate marine eutrophication and prevent bottom water oxygen depletion. Water action plans have in recent decades reduced nitrogen and phosphorus loading to the ocean around Denmark by 45% and 80%, respectively. Nevertheless, the area of seabed with oxygen depletion has contin

Amazon windthrow disturbances are likely to increase with storm frequency under global warming.

Forest mortality caused by convective storms (windthrow) is a major disturbance in the Amazon. However, the linkage between windthrows at the surface and convective storms in the atmosphere remains unclear. In addition, the current Earth system models (ESMs) lack mechanistic links between convective wind events and tree mortality. Here we find an empirical relationship that maps convective available potential energy, which is well simulated by ESMs, to the spatial pattern of large windthrow events. This relationship builds connections between strong convective storms and forest dynamics in the

Global Warming, Fertility, and Spermatogenesis Decline: Global and Regional Evidence from 195 Countries and Implications for Climate Adaptation Policy.

This study investigates whether long-term global warming is associated with fertility decline across 195 countries from 1960 to 2023, and whether this relationship varies by economic development and adaptive capacity. We analyze Total Fertility Rate (TFR) data from the World Bank alongside temperature anomaly measures from NOAA and NASA using Pearson correlations and ordinary least squares (OLS) regression models. Regional analyses include Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and the Arctic, with GDP per capita serving as a proxy for economic development and adaptive capacity. Globally, temp

Future warming increases probability of globally synchronized maize production shocks.

Meeting the global food demand of roughly 10 billion people by the middle of the 21st century will become increasingly challenging as the Earth's climate continues to warm. Earlier studies suggest that once the optimum growing temperature is exceeded, mean crop yields decline and the variability of yield increases even if interannual climate variability remains unchanged. Here, we use global datasets of maize production and climate variability combined with future temperature projections to quantify how yield variability will change in the world's major maize-producing and -exporting countries

[Mosquitoes and Ticks: The Influence of Global Warming in the Transmission of Infectious Diseases in Germany].

During the last 135 years, the average temperature in Germany has increased by 1.4 °C. By 2050, a further rise by 1.5 °C is expected. This is associated with an increase of precipitation during the winter months. This climate change probably will improve both the growth conditions for mosquitoes and ticks, as well as their ability to transmit infectious diseases. Today, vectors that have not yet been present are invading into Germany. Among them is Aedes albopictus, which transmits Chikungunya, Zika, and Dengue Fever. Also, spreading of autochthonous malaria and West Nile Fever appear possible

Thermophilization: Concepts, Methods, and Implications of Changes in Community Composition due to Global Warming.

With global warming, many species will shift their geographic ranges coldward (i.e., towards higher latitudes and elevations) to remain within suitable thermal conditions. At the community level, these range shifts result in "thermophilization"-the increasing relative abundance of warm-adapted ("thermophilic") species and the concomitant decrease of cold-adapted species over time. Quantifying rates of thermophilization provides a powerful approach to assessing responses to rising temperatures at the community level, particularly in high-diversity systems where the detailed spatial data needed

Pandemics, pathogenicity and changing molecular epidemiology of cholera in the era of global warming.

BACKGROUND: Vibrio cholerae, a Gram-negative, non-spore forming curved rod is found in diverse aquatic ecosystems around the planet. It is classified according to its major surface antigen into around 206 serogroups, of which O1 and O139 cause epidemic cholera. A recent spatial modelling technique estimated that around 2.86 million cholera cases occur globally every year, and of them approximately 95,000 die. About 1.3 billion people are currently at risk of infection from cholera. Meta-analysis and mathematical modelling have demonstrated that due to global warming the burden of vector-borne

The Role of Low Global Warming Potential Propellants on Suspension Metered Dose Inhaler Sprays.

The reformulation of suspension-based pressurized metered dose inhalers (pMDI) with low global warming potential (GWP) propellants is challenged by wide-ranging changes to their chemicophysical properties such as vapor pressure, density and latent heat. The effect of low-GWP propellants on spray pattern and plume geometry for suspension pMDIs are not fully understood. There is a lack of data regarding the role of propellant choice and potential interactions with suspended drugs, which may explain performance variations between products and guide development of in-silico models. In this study,

Global warming and testis function: A challenging crosstalk in an equally challenging environmental scenario.

Environmental pollution, accounting for both chemical and physical factors, is a major matter of concern due to its health consequences in both humans and animals. The release of greenhouse gases with the consequent increase in environmental temperature is acknowledged to have a major impact on the health of both animals and humans, in current and future generations. A large amount of evidence reports detrimental effects of acute heat stress on testis function, particularly on the spermatogenetic and steroidogenetic process, in both animal and human models, wich is largely related to the testi

Global warming increases the interspecific competitiveness of the invasive plant alligator weed, Alternanthera philoxeroides.

Global warming could accelerate the spread of invasive species to higher latitudes and intensify their effects on native species. Here, we report results of two years of field surveys along a latitudinal gradient (21°N to 31°N) in southern China, to determine the species structure of the invasive plant Alternanthera philoxeroides community. We also performed a replacement series experiment (mono and mixed) to evaluate the effects of elevated temperature on the competitiveness of A. philoxeroides with the native co-occurring species Digitaria sanguinalis. In the field survey, we found that the

Ocean circulation changes rather than global warming drove temperature trends across the Miocene Climatic Optimum.

Early-to-Middle Miocene [23 to 13.8 million years ago (Ma)] climates were ∼6° to 9°C warmer than today. Around 16.9 Ma, benthic foraminiferal oxygen isotope (δ18O) records suggest pronounced warming, known as the Miocene Climatic Optimum (MCO) onset. However, explaining this putative global warming with carbon dioxide (CO2) forcing faces challenges in terms of timing and forcing magnitude. Our new biomarker-based ocean temperature records, combined with published data, reveal no substantial mean global upper ocean warming across the MCO. Instead, temperature changes differ considerably between

The boiling frog effect: Global warming delays emotional impacts of air pollution in warmer climates.

Climate change, air pollution, and extreme weather interact in complex ways that impact emotional states of populations. These dynamics are crucial in effective health planning and risk profiling, however, remain poorly understood in real time contexts, hampering timely responses by governmental agencies. Here we conduct a long-term large-scale investigation of the synthetic and lagged effects of environmental stressors on expressed sentiment, as a proxy of emotional states and subjective wellbeing, derived from over 850 million geotagged tweets using natural language processing across the con

Assessing 2‑Fluorobutane (CH3CHFCH2CH3) as a Climate-Friendly Alternative: Atmospheric Chemistry and Global Warming Potentials.

2-Fluorobutane (HFC-3-10-1se, CH3CHFCH2CH3), a simple fluoroalkane, has received less attention than other widely used hydrofluorocarbons. Understanding its atmospheric chemistry is essential for evaluating its potential as a low- Global Warming Potential (GWP) alternative in industrial applications. Currently, only estimates of GWP relative to carbon dioxide (CO2) at time horizons of 20 and 100 years (GWP20 and GWP100) have been reported to be 4 and 1, respectively, based on the calculated radiative efficiency (RE) and estimated rate coefficients (k OH) for the gas-phase reaction of hydroxyl

Nationwide economic impacts of sea level rise and storm surge from global warming in Australia.

Driven by global warming and thermal expansion of the oceans, ice loss from glaciers and ice sheets will continue to increase sea levels and the risk of storm-surge, threatening coastal regions worldwide. This study presents the first national-scale assessment of SLR/S impacts on land use and assets across Australia, covering 1,156 coastal sub-regions in six states and the Northern Territory under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios. The analysis integrates physical and economic impacts across 10 aggregated land-use categories. By 2100, under RCP4.5, SLR/S is projected to affect 267.5 thousand propert

Global Response and Mechanism of Methane Cycling in Wetlands Under Elevated Atmospheric CO2 and Warming.

Wetland is one of the most significant sources of methane (CH4). Although global warming and elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations (eCO2) are expected to affect the CH4 cycle, the response of CH4 emission in natural wetland and paddy has been observed to be inconsistent. This variation is likely due to the complex interactions among soil, plant, and microbial processes that regulate CH4 dynamics, leaving the underlying mechanisms across global studies unknown. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis to elucidate the effects of warming, eCO2, and their co-effects on CH4 cycling in wetla
