A 35-year-old female presented with episodes of frequent dizziness, ear fullness, and right ear tinnitus for 12 months. Head imaging revealed a right glomus tympanicum tumor. She underwent pre-operative endovascular embolization of the glomus tympanicum tumor with surgical, cyanoacrylate-based glue. Immediately after the procedure, she developed drowsiness and severe pain in the right temporal region. Further investigations revealed a right cerebellar stroke in the posterior inferior cerebellar artery territory. She was treated with intravenous heparin, followed by one year of oral anticoagula

BACKGROUND: Paragangliomas in the central nervous system account for 0.6% of all head and neck neoplasms, with glomus tympanicum being the most common middle ear tumor. Carcinoid tumors are neuroendocrine tumors, representing less than 1% of neuroendocrine neoplasms in the middle ear. Misdiagnoses have been reported in the literature regarding glomus and carcinoid tumors, however, none have been in the central nervous system or middle ear.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 70-year-old female with a history of left temporal lobe tumor underwent unsuccessful resection due to intraoperative bleeding at an out

PURPOSE: To compare the outcome of salvage radiotherapy (RT) and surgery for recurrent head-and-neck chemodectomas.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively studied 70 patients with benign chemodectomas of the head and neck treated with surgery at the Cleveland Clinic between July 1969 and August 1999; 29 of these patients were diagnosed with recurrent tumors. Salvage RT was used in 12 patients (gamma knife radiosurgery for 7, conventional external beam RT for 4, and intensity-modulated RT for 1 patient). The median follow-up was 55 months for the entire group of 70 patients.
RESULTS: The m

BACKGROUND: The management of glomus tympanicum tumours can be challenging. Blue laser coagulation may improve bleeding control thus facilitating an endoscopic transcanal excision. The objective of this presentation is to illustrate the authors' experience using this novel tool.
METHODS: Case report of a patient that underwent exclusive endoscopic transcanal blue laser surgery of a class A2 glomus tympanicum tumour in a tertiary referral center.
CONCLUSION: The present study provides evidence of the safety and efficacy of endoscopic blue laser surgery, for the minimally invasive treatment of

Tumors arising from paraganglioma tissue are properly called paragangliomas. Preferentially these tumors are named for their site of origin. In the head and neck they are most commonly found arising from the carotid body (glomus caroticum), the jugular bulb (glomus jugulare), the tympanic cavity (glomus tympanicum) and the vagal ganglia (glomus vagale). Mutiple paragangliomas may occur in 2-10%. The purpose of this study was to present the rare case of patient with three kinds of chemodectoma: glomus tympanicum, jugulare i vagale.

INTRODUCTION: Paragangliomas, in other words chemodectomas were bening tumors arising from the paragangliomas cells of the parasympathetic system. There are four kinds of paragangliomas: carotic artery baroreceptors (glomus caroticum), tympanic cavity (glomus tympanicum), internal jugular vein (glomus jugulare) and placed along vagal nerve (glomus vagale). Overall 5-10% of all paragangliomas are malignant. The bening lorms paragangliomas, of the originally numerous location are rare described.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The authors describe the rare case of 24 yrs old male, of the bening form para

Glomus tympanicum is a type of glomus tumor that affects the middle ear, located at the auricular branch of the vagus nerve. Glomus tumors, in general, are rare, slow-growing tumors and may not require surgery in some patients. It can be challenging to manage due to its hypervascularity, location, and advanced stage of diagnosis. Although glomus tympanicum commonly presents with pulsatile tinnitus and conductive hearing loss, it presented in our patient with large-volume hemoptysis and epistaxis, requiring urgent diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. We highlight the unique presentation of

Twenty-six patients with chemodectomas were treated with radiation therapy from 1961 to 1983 and followed for at least 4 years. In 16 glomus tympanicum lesions treated primarily with radiation, long-term control was achieved in all (follow-up 4-24 years, mean 10.5). Fifteen of 16 had no clinical evidence of disease at time of death or last follow-up, and one patient had recurrent but stable disease at 10 years and died of an unrelated illness 19 years after treatment. Eight of the glomus tympanicum lesions were referred for radiation therapy with persistent disease after multiple surgical proc

57 patients have been reviewed. 39 had radiotherapy (28 glomus jugulare, 7 glomus tympanicum and 4 glomus caroticum/vagale tumours). Two patients have died of their tumour and one patient had increasing nerve involvement during two months after irradiation. It is concluded that the results bear comparison with those of surgery and that extensive surgery in tumours with extratympanal growth is not warranted.

A patient with multiple, synchronous, non-familial head and neck paragangliomas is reported. There were three primary neoplasms, a glomus tympanicum and glomus vagale on the right side and a glomus tumour of the carotid body on the left. Such a combination has never been reported previously. The reports of all the series with paragangliomas in the literature, as well as the reports of single cases with multiple tumours during the last three decades, are reviewed. Specific problems in diagnosis and management of multiple glomus tumours are discussed.

Eight of 76 glomus tumors in the head and neck region are multiple. The most common association is with carotid body tumors; the most common pattern is an ipsilateral glomus tympanicum and carotid body tumor. The approach to clinical evaluation is based on a complete otolaryngologic, neurologic, and neuroradiologic evaluation of all patients with glomus tumors. The rationale for priorities in management is the resection of the most dangerous lesions first. This study confirms the previous observations that glomus tumors have a definite proclivity for multicentricity (10 percent) and a high inc

OBJECTIVE: We describe a case of endolymphatic sac tumour confined to the middle ear, which radiologically mimicked a glomus tympanicum, in a 58-year-old woman with tinnitus.
CASE REPORT: A 58-year-old woman presented with a one-year history of right-sided tinnitus. The clinical, radiological and surgical features were felt to be in keeping with a glomus tympanicum. However, the histopathological picture was that of a low grade papillary carcinoma of the endolymphatic sac, i.e. an endolymphatic sac tumour.
CONCLUSION: Endolymphatic sac tumours are classically locally aggressive and centred a

Multifocal head and neck paragangliomas are exceptionally rare. We present a patient with 4 synchronous tumors including a sympathetic chain lesion. This is a case report and literature review conducted from September 2021 to the present. Our 69-year-old male patient presented to the clinic with multifocal paraganglioma involving the right carotid body, right cervical sympathetic trunk, right glomus jugulare, and left glomus tympanicum. After preoperative embolization, successful surgical resection was performed for the right sympathetic trunk and right carotid body tumor. Postoperatively, the

Glomus tumors are benign hyperplasia of glomus bodies, and they are rarely found in the head and neck. The middle ear is an exceptionally rare site for a true glomus tumor, and there are only three previously reported cases in this location. Glomus tumors are etiologically different than glomus tympanicum, which are paragangliomas of the middle ear that are often mistakenly referred to as "glomus tumors." This is a common misconception due to the "glomus" misnomer. We report a case of a patient diagnosed with a middle ear glomangioma after initially presenting to our clinic with tinnitus and h

Twenty-six patients with glomus jugulare (16), glomus tympanicum (three), or carotid glomus (seven) tumors were examined with contrast-enhanced CT scans and MR scans without and with Gd-DTPA. MR and CT scans had similar sensitivities, but the enhanced MR scans were diagnostically more specific than either CT or nonenhanced MR. Dynamic MR scanning permitted measurement of the degree of Gd-DTPA enhancement over time. We recommend contrast-enhanced MR with short sequences and a dynamic approach in patients with suspected carotid, tympanic, and jugular paragangliomas.

PURPOSE: Transcanal endoscopic ear surgery (TEES) is an increasingly used surgical approach for otologic surgeries, but no en face preoperative imaging format currently exists. We aim to assess the utility of a transcanal high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) reformat suitable for TEES preoperative planning.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Preoperative HRCTs of patients with middle ear pathologies (cholesteatoma, otosclerosis, and glomus tympanicum) who underwent TEES were obtained. Axial image series were rotated and reformatted -90 or +90 degrees for left and right ear surgeries, respectively,
