Our aim was to analyse the overall and disease-free survival (DFS), time to recovery of oral feeding, and morbidity, in a consecutive series of patients who had total glossectomy with preservation of the larynx for advanced cancer of the tongue at the European institute of Oncology (Milan). From June 2002 to April 2011, 37 patients who were treated for advanced cancer of the tongue had total glossectomy, bilateral neck dissection, and preservation of the larynx. Various flaps were used for reconstruction. Overall and disease-free survival were assessed from the day of operation to the latest o

Multiple site specific procedures have been proposed to treat obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Midline glossectomy (MLG) is a procedure that directly enlarges the hypopharyngeal airspace using the carbon dioxide laser. The initial experience of 12 patients is presented. Midline glossectomy as the sole procedure was performed on 11 patients who had failed uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) and who were felt to have significant hypopharyngeal collapse on physical examination and Müller's maneuver. One patient with primary hypopharyngeal narrowing underwent MLG. Five (42%) were considered r

Rehabilitation of the glossectomy patient is one of the most difficult and challenging problems for the prosthodontist and speech pathologist. The tongue plays an important role in articulation, control of secretions, formation of a bolus, propulsion of the bolus toward the pharynx, clearing the palate, and initiation of the swallow reflex. This paper presents speech and prosthodontic considerations for a patient who underwent a glossectomy and had the additional problem of reduced oral opening.

A case is presented where the enlargement of the tongue due to acromegaly failed to respond to bromocriptine therapy, resulting in marked dysarthria. A partial glossectomy technique for tongue reduction is described, and the surgical and anaesthetic problems associated with acromegaly are discussed.

IMPORTANCE: Oral tongue is the most common subsite of oral cavity cancers, and incidence is increasing. Tongue resection is associated with morbidity, affecting speech, swallowing, and quality of life.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of tumor volume and extent of tongue resection with functional outcomes.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Patients with squamous cell carcinoma who underwent surgical resection of the oral tongue at a tertiary-level academic institution between 2014 and 2025 were included in this retrospective cohort study. Demographic, tumor, treatment, and postoperative

OBJECTIVES: To assess the feasibility of radial forearm free flap (RFFF) reconstruction of glossectomy defects without tracheostomy tube (TT).
METHODS: Retrospective review of patients with at least oral tongue defects who underwent RFFF reconstruction. Pre- and intra-operative factors were documented. Post-operative respiratory complications included inability to extubate, pneumonia, or need for re-intubation or TT within 30 days.
RESULTS: Twenty-one patients underwent RFFF reconstruction without TT, and 36 patients with TT. The average hospital length of stay was 1.5 days shorter in those

PURPOSE: While the presence of dysphagia following partial glossectomy has been widely reported, there is insufficient quality evidence to guide clinical decision making about the treatment of this disorder. This study investigated a novel dysphagia rehabilitation approach using ultrasound tongue imaging for patient training.
METHOD: Initially, a pilot study was conducted to investigate the feasibility of ultrasound visual feedback during swallow tasks. The protocol was then replicated using a single-case experimental designed study to investigate therapeutic effect. Swallow, speech, and orom

The standard treatment for patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy. However, when PAP therapy fails, surgery may be an option to alleviate the obstruction. The base of tongue plays an important role in this obstruction, and addressing the tongue base surgically can be a challenge for the head and neck surgeon. Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) using the da Vinci Surgical System provides a safe and effective way to approach and manage the base of tongue and supraglottis. Advantages of TORS include wide-field high-definition 3-D visualization, prec

PURPOSE: Tongue cancer is known to negatively affect both speech and swallowing function; however this is the first review to report speech-language pathology (SLP) intervention for both functions following partial glossectomy.
METHOD: Using a PRISMA approach, systematic screening of nine databases was undertaken. Original studies reporting SLP rehabilitation for speech and/or swallowing dysfunction with participants following partial glossectomy as primary cancer treatment were included.
RESULT: These studies are discussed in terms of SLP assessment and intervention trends as well as qualit

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical efficacy of partial glossectomy assisted with temperature-controlled radiofrequency for treating macroglossia.
METHODS: There were 4 patients performed this procedure. We took a rhombus shape incision in the middle of the tongue and performed a wedge excision.
RESULTS: The mouth can close entirely in all of patients and there weren' t hemorrhage and obviously swollen; Tongue's sensory function hadn't disturbance. Masticate function were normal. One patient still had the symptom that tongue lied outside the oral cavity occasionally after operation. The symptom

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Advanced carcinoma of the tongue can require total glossectomy. Although radiation therapy is of limited efficacy in T3 and T4 tumors involving the base of the tongue, many surgeons are reluctant to suggest highly mutilating surgery.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
METHODS: We compared early postoperative complications, hospital stay duration, function, and oncological outcomes in patients who underwent total glossectomy without laryngectomy as first-line or salvage therapy.
RESULTS: Postoperative course and functional outcomes were similar in the two groups

BACKGROUND: Nowadays surgery remains the gold standard of treatment for tongue cancer. Via a more clear and precise terminology, the glossectomy classification by Ansarin et al. facilitates shared communication between surgeons, allowing comparison between published research and improving surgical practice and patient care. To establish the association of glossectomies, according to their classification by Ansarin et al. with overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DSF), and cause-specific survival (CSS) in tongue cancer, we conducted a systemic retrospective study on 300 consecutive pat

BACKGROUND: The tongue is an essential organ for human interaction, communication and survival. To date, there is a paucity of objective functional, patient reported, or quality of life outcomes of patients undergoing a total glossectomy with preservation of the larynx (TGLP).
OBJECTIVE: To examine prospectively collected objective, self-reported functional and quality of life (QOL) data in patients undergoing TGLP and free flap reconstruction.
METHODS: Sixteen TGLP patients were identified in the prospective head and neck cancer and functional outcomes database between January of 2009 and D

INTRODUCTION: Management of patients after total or subtotal glossectomy presents challenging reconstruction of complex three-dimensional defects. Such defects can have a dramatic effect on respiration, speech, and nutrition, and may significantly impact quality of life.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We present our experience with 39 patients submitted to total or subtotal glossectomy and reconstruction with microsurgical flaps. Functional results are reported in term of swallowing ability, decannulation, and intelligible speech. Oncological outcomes are described in terms of local disease control an

Major resections of the tongue have not been commonly performed in animals because of concerns about the unfavorable postoperative effects of diminished lingual function. Five dogs were retrospectively reviewed to determine prehensile function and quality of life after glossectomies. Examinations were performed 1 week to 8 years after glossectomy, and owner interviews were conducted 10 months to 8 years after the surgery. All five dogs had acceptable and functional outcomes. Based on these five cases, glossectomy was well tolerated by dogs and may be a viable treatment option for aggressive to

We ought to report an unusual case of a 49-year-old patient who underwent delayed reconstruction of the oral cavity defect, with an anterolateral thigh flap, two years after surgical demolition and adjuvant chemo-radiotherapy. At the end of oncologic treatment, he could not eat through oral route and presented evident speech articulation difficulties. After surgical reconstruction, swallowing assessment showed an improvement of swallowing with no gross signs of airways inhalation. His understandability of speech improved as well. Delayed reconstruction by a microvascular free flap with exclusi

OBJECTIVE: Reconstruction of total glossectomy defects has been revolutionized by the popularity of free flap use in the head and neck. Challenging defects can be addressed with a variety of different free and pedicled flaps. The purpose of this study is to review our method of flap selection in cases of total glossectomy defects with laryngeal preservation, with an emphasis on the variations of these defects and patient body habitus.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series with chart review.
SETTING: Tertiary care referral center.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: All patients undergoing total glossectomy with lary

This study involved an acoustic and perceptual analysis of the speech produced by a 31-year-old female following total glossectomy. Speech samples were collected on three occasions within the first 3 months following glossectomy. Vowel articulation was examined acoustically as a function of vowel space and the Euclidean distance separating corner vowels. Perceptual analyses involved presentation of the participant's CV productions to 30 healthy adult listeners who made forced-choice identifications of consonant type. Acoustic analysis revealed improvements in vowel space area and an increase i

From October 1999 to July 2005, defects after total glossectomy with laryngectomy (TGL) for cancer of the tongue or middle pharynx were reconstructed with rectus abdominis myocutaneous (RAMC) flaps in nine patients. The skin flaps were designed larger in width than the original defect to create a funnel-shaped oropharynx and prevent stricture. Six patients had uneventful postoperative courses and began to eat perorally 8 to 15 days postoperatively. One patient suffered flap necrosis due to arterial thrombosis and two patients had leakage. Eventually, eight patients could eat soft foods or grue
