Independent association between obstructive sleep apnea severity and glycated hemoglobin in adults without diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: We tested the hypothesis of an independent cross-sectional association between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity and glycated hemoglobin (HbA(1c)) in adults without known diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: HbA(1c) was measured in whole-blood samples from 2,139 patients undergoing nocturnal recording for suspected OSA. Participants with self-reported diabetes, use of diabetes medication, or HbA(1c) value ≥6.5% were excluded from this study. Our final sample size comprised 1,599 patients. RESULTS: A dose-response relationship was observed between apnea-hypopnea index (AHI)

The Effect of Iron Deficiency Anemia on Hemoglobin Glycation in Diabetics and Non-diabetics.

Background Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most prevalent form of nutritional anemia worldwide, affecting a substantial portion of the population. It has significant negative effects on health and the economy, especially in poorer nations, and is more prevalent than anemia alone. Although hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is frequently used to track long-term glycemic management, several variables, including iron deficiency, might affect its values. For proper diabetic care, it is essential to comprehend this link. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of IDA on HbA1c levels in individu

The Association Between the Hemoglobin Glycation Index and Cardiometabolic Diseases: A Mini-Review.

The hemoglobin glycation index (HGI) has emerged as a pivotal biomarker for evaluating long-term glycemic control, offering a more comprehensive assessment compared with conventional glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) measurements. Elevated HGI levels are significantly correlated with the incidence of cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs). This review synthesizes current evidence on the clinical utility of the HGI across coronary artery disease (CAD), hypertension, heart failure (HF), diabetes mellitus (DM), serum uric acid (SUA) levels, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), thereby providing clini

Understanding the impact of the molecular crowding environment on the glyoxal-mediated glycation of hemoglobin.

In diabetes, the level of glyoxal (GO), a highly reactive oxoaldehyde increases from its normal value. GO reacts with various proteins and produces advanced glycated end products (AGEs). Living cells contain densely packed biomolecules, which exert crowding effects that may take up 20-40% of the entire volume of a cell. Molecular crowding significantly influences various cellular processes by affecting the behavior of molecules within the crowded intracellular environment, impacting protein folding, stability, interactions, and ultimately, the function of many biological pathways. Thus, it ess

Association between Hemoglobin Glycation Index and NAFLD in Chinese Nondiabetic Individuals.

PURPOSE: Limited studies have preliminarily identified a positive association between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and hemoglobin glycation index (HGI). However, this association has not been fully established. We aim to investigate the association between NAFLD and HGI in Chinese nondiabetic individuals and to construct a risk score based on HGI to predict a person's risk of NAFLD. METHODS: After strict exclusion criteria, 5,903 individuals were included in this retrospective cross-sectional study. We randomly selected 1,967 subjects in the enrollment to obtain an equation of lin

Glycated Hemoglobin and Prediabetes: A Systematic Review of HbA1c Thresholds for Type 2 Diabetes Prevention.

Background/Objectives: HbA1c is widely used to identify adults at increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but major guidance differs on whether the lower limit of an HbA1c-defined risk range should be 5.7% (39 mmol/mol) or 6.0% (42 mmol/mol). This systematic review evaluated the prognostic and screening utility of HbA1c 5.7-6.4% compared with HbA1c 6.0-6.4% and examined whether available evidence supports threshold-based allocation of preventive interventions. Methods: The review was reported in accordance with PRISMA 2020 and registered in PROSPERO (CRD42019134344). PubMed/MEDLINE,

Association of Aerobic Physical Activity and Resistance Exercise with Glycated Hemoglobin in Women with Diabetes.

PURPOSE: The American Diabetes Association recommends that patients with diabetes engage in at least 150 minutes of physical activity (PA) per week and perform resistance exercise (RE) at least twice weekly. However, their benefits in controlling glucose levels among women with diabetes are not completely understood. Therefore, we investigated whether meeting PA or RE guidelines is associated with lower odds of uncontrolled glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) among women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed 1213 women with diabetes from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2014-2

Glycated hemoglobin as a long-term predictor of cardiovascular outcomes in patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy.

BACKGROUND: Several biomarkers are known to predict long-term complications after non-cardiac surgery, including major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), myocardial infarction, and death. Carotid endarterectomy (CEA), a low to medium-risk procedure for carotid stenosis, aims to prevent stroke. Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) may hold prognostic value for MACE. This study evaluates the role of HbA1c in predicting all-cause mortality and MACE in patients undergoing CEA. METHODS: A post hoc analysis was conducted using data from a prospective database of patients who underwent CEA under regional

Assessment of Serum Electrolytes and Glycated Hemoglobin Level in Non-diabetic Iron-Deficient Anaemic Patients.

INTRODUCTION: The WHO has recognised iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) as the most common nutritional deficiency in the world, with 30% of the population being affected by this condition. The patient's glycemic status during the past three months is shown by the glycated haemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) test. According to several studies, iron deficiency can increase HbA1C levels without affecting blood sugar levels. HbA1C levels of ≥ 6.5% have been approved by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) as a diagnostic indicator for diabetes mellitus (DM). An imbalance in serum electrolyte levels and anaemia

Inverse Association between Iron Deficiency and Glycated Hemoglobin Levels in Ghanaian Adults-the RODAM Study.

BACKGROUND: Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is often used to diagnose type 2 diabetes (T2D), but studies show that iron deficiency (ID) is associated with elevated HbA1c in the absence of hyperglycemia. It is unknown whether ID prevalence varies between sub-Saharan African populations living in different locations and whether ID influences HbA1c levels in these populations. OBJECTIVES: We assessed the prevalence of ID among Ghanaian migrants in Europe and nonmigrant Ghanaians, and the influence of ID on HbA1c categories among Ghanaians without T2D. METHODS: We used the database from the cross-se
