Cooling in the tropics: ethylene glycol overdose.

Ethylene glycol is the active ingredient used in radiator antifreeze. Severe ingestions of ethylene glycol are uncommon in Australia, but if untreated, can result in multiorgan dysfunction, particularly renal failure and cerebral oedema. We report on a patient who consumed a large quantity of ethylene glycol. He was treated with enteral ethanol and went on to make a full recovery, despite an initial moribund state. We briefly review the pathophysiology and current treatment strategies for ethylene glycol intoxication, and discuss issues surrounding enteral versus parenteral ethanol administrat

Polyethylene glycol and prevalence of colorectal adenomas.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Dietary polyethylene glycol (PEG) is extraordinarily potent in the chemoprevention of experimental colon carcinogenesis. PEG is used to treat constipation in France and in the USA. French laxatives include Forlax (PEG4000), Movicol and Transipeg (PEG3350), and Idrocol (pluronic F68). This study tests the hypothesis that use of a PEG-based laxative might reduce the prevalence of colorectal tumors. METHODS: In this population-based study, consecutive patients attending for routine total colonoscopy were enrolled during four months by the gastroenterologists of Indre-et-Loire

[Acute encephalopathy in ethylene glycol poisoning].

Poisoning with ethylene glycol is the most frequent poisoning in our country. Acute encephalopathy during this poisoning may be a cause of important diagnostic difficulties, especially in the initial phase of the poisoning, due to the variety of symptoms and signs. Three cases of this poisoning are reported. All patients were erroneously referred and admitted to neurological hospital department. It is postulated that in each case of coma of unknown aetiology with signs suggesting damage to the brain stem and hyperventilation arterial blood gasometric examination should be done and blood and ur

Diethylene glycol poisoning in Nigerian children.

Between June and September 1990, 47 children died at Jos University Teaching Hospital, Nigeria from ingestion of paracetamol syrup adulterated with diethylene glycol. Most of the children presented with anuria, fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and convulsions. Signs on admission were tachycardia, acidotic breathing, pallor, oedema and hepatomegaly. Laboratory findings included hyperkalaemia, acidosis, elevated creatinine level and hypoglycaemia. Management consisted of correction of dehydration and acidosis plus administration of antibiotics when indicated. None of the children had dialysis. All die

[Acute poisoning with ethylene glycol esters].

The study was performed of 13 acute oral poisonings with ethylene glycol ethers characterized as moderate or severe and resulting in poor outcome in 3 cases. Ethyl ether was responsible for 3 poisonings, methyl ether for 10 ones. It was found, that the intoxication had four stages or periods (initial, latent, clinical, recovery) and presented with CNS impairment, gastrointestinal, hepatic, renal disorders, decompensated metabolic acidosis, etc. The paper describes two clinical cases and experimental toxicity of cellosolves as well as the effect of the inhibitor of isovaleric acid amide alcohol

[Skin irritation caused by propylene glycols].

Propylene glycol is used in foods, medicine and cosmetics because it is a good solvent which has, simultaneously, moisture-regulating, antiseptic, and preservative effects. Propylene glycol may produce eczematous skin reactions of toxic and, more rarely, of allergic nature. Positive patch test reactions to propylene glycol are difficult to interpret. Allergic reactions may be confirmed by a clear clinical relevance, repeated local skin provocation (usage test), or oral provocation. In the Department of Dermatology, University of Oregon, 84 patients were patch tested with 100% propylene glycol.

Contact allergy from propylene glycol.

Propylene glycol (PG) 20% in water was tested in a group of 400 subjects with eczematous contact dermatitis. In six inpatients (1.5%) reactions were recorded as considered positive according to the following criteria: 1. the relevant history of prolonged contact with PG-containing topical pharmaceutical and cosmetic preparations; 2. the reaction extended in time outside the area of application of the test substance, and persisted locally for several day; 3. a similar reaction was obtained on repetition of the test with a lower concentration of PG; 4. the prompt improvement in clinical manifest

Contact urticaria due to polyethylene glycol.

Contact dermatitis developed in a patient from the use of Tinactin and Lotrimin solutions. Initially, the usual 'delayed' type of allergic contact dermatitis was suspected. However, covered patch tests gave negative results after forty-eight hours. 'Open' testing revealed an 'immediate' urticarial reaction to polyethylene glycol, which is used as a solvent in both antifungal agents. It should be emphasized that after a patient scratches or irritates an urticarial contact dermatitis, the resulting eruption closely resembles contact dermatitis of the usual delayed variety. Apparently, this is th

Poly Lactic Co-glycolic Acid d-α-tocopheryl Polyethylene Glycol 1000 Succinate Fabricated Polyethylene Glycol Hybrid Nanoparticles of Imatinib Mesylate for the Treatment of Glioblastoma Multiforme.

AIMS: This study aimed to develop Imatinib Mesylate (IMT)-loaded Poly Lactic-co-Glycolic Acid (PLGA)-D-α-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol succinate (TPGS)- Polyethylene glycol (PEG) hybrid nanoparticles (CSLHNPs) with optimized physicochemical properties for targeted delivery to glioblastoma multiforme. BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most destructive type of brain tumor with several complications. Currently, most treatments for drug delivery for this disease face challenges due to the poor blood-brain barrier (BBB) and lack of site-specific delivery. Imatinib Mesylate (IMT) is

Reviewing the evidence of antimicrobial activity of glycols.

In the 1940s and 1950s, researchers seeking safe and novel ways to eliminate airborne pathogens from enclosed spaces, investigated glycol vapours as a method of disinfection. More recently, the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for a non-toxic aerial disinfectant that can be used in the presence of people. This scoping review is intended to analyse the early and more recent literature on glycol disinfection, scrutinizing the methodologies used, and to determine if the use of glycols as modern-day disinfectants is justified PRISMA-ScR guidelines were used to assess the 749 articles retriev

Unintentional Ethylene Glycol Poisoning in an Adolescent.

The differential diagnosis is broad when a patient presents with an altered mental status. Ethylene glycol poisoning, a life-threatening condition, can occur as an intentional self-harm attempt or unintentional consumption. It is metabolized in the liver by a series of enzymes, and the metabolites so formed are responsible for the majority of clinical effects. The diverse range of clinical effects includes central nervous system (CNS), gastrointestinal, cardiovascular system (CVS), pulmonary as well as renal effects. The evidence of metabolic acidosis, elevated anion gap, high osmolal gap, and

Role of polyethylene glycol in childhood constipation.

Constipation is a common and chronic problem in children worldwide. Long-term use of laxatives is necessary for successful treatment of chronic constipation. Commonly used laxatives in children include milk of magnesia, lactulose, mineral oil, and polyethylene glycol (PEG). Recent studies report the efficacy and safety of PEG for the long-term treatment of constipation in children. Because of its excellent patient acceptance, PEG is being used widely in children for constipation. In this commentary, we review the recently published pediatric literature on the efficacy, safety, and patient acce

Triethylene glycol HO(CH2CH2O)3H.

TEG is a liquid higher glycol of very low vapor pressure with uses that are primarily industrial. It has a very low order of acute toxicity by i.v., i.p., peroral, percutaneous and inhalation (vapor and aerosol) routes of exposure. It does not produce primary skin irritation. Acute eye contact with the liquid causes mild local transient irritation (conjunctival hyperemia and slight chemosis) but does not induce corneal injury. Animal maximization and human volunteer repeated insult patch tests studies have shown that TEG does not cause skin sensitization. A study with Swiss-Webster mice demons

The glycolic acid trichloroacetic acid peel.

BACKGROUND: Chemical peeling has become increasingly popular. Technique is more critical in medium depth peeling than with deeper peels because of variable penetration of the trichloroacetic acid. OBJECTIVE: This article describes a novel use of two caustic agents, glycolic acid and trichloroacetic acid, to effect a predictable approach to medium depth peeling. METHODS: Without other skin preparation, 70% glycolic acid was applied to the entire face and diluted with water after 2 minutes. Then, 35% trichloroacetic acid was applied over the same areas. Biopsies were done on selected patients

Fatal propylene glycol toxicosis in a horse.

Toxicosis attributable to propylene glycol (1,2-propanediol) was suspected in an 8-year-old 450- to 500-kg male Quarter Horse. Clinical signs of toxicosis developed within 15 minutes of the accidental iatrogenic oral administration of 3.8 L of propylene glycol. Clinical signs of toxicosis included salivation, sweating, ataxia, and signs of pain. Additionally, at 24 hours after propylene glycol ingestion, the horse became increasingly atactic, had an abnormal breath odor, developed rapid shallow breathing, and was cyanotic. The horse died of apparent respiratory arrest 28 hours after the propyl

Ethylene glycol toxicosis in a pygmy goat.

Ingestion of ethylene glycol was responsible for severe azotemia, acidosis, and abnormal anionic gap value in a pygmy goat. Clinical signs consisted of ataxia, polydipsia, decreased rumen motility, and constipation. Nervous signs included depression, absence of menace response, vertical nystagmus, and terminal convulsions. Four days after onset of clinical signs, antidotal treatment was ineffective. Lesions and oxalate crystals in the kidney were typical of ethylene glycol or plant oxalate toxicosis in other species. Toxicologic analysis revealed ethylene glycol in the rumen content and glycol
