Safety of NADES Extract of Glycyrrhiza Roots After Topical Application and Peroral Administration to Mice.

Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) have been extensively used for the extraction of a wide spectrum of plant materials. However, limited data about the in vivo toxicity of NADES extracts restrict their future practical application. In this study, we are aiming to assess the safety of a Sorbitol-lactic acid (3:1 mol./mol.; 30% water) NADES extract of Glycyrrhiza roots (GR) in mice. LC-MS/MS analysis revealed the presence of 17 metabolites, including phenolic acids, flavonoids, their glycosides, chalcones, terpene saponins, and coumarins. Interestingly, most of the identified compounds were

Enrichment and qualitative analysis of flavonoid glycosides from the aerial parts of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch.

Our previous study found that the aerial parts of Chinese liquorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch.) had pharmacological effects against chronic non-bacterial prostatitis in rats, however the pharmacologically active compounds remain unclear. Here, a method based on UPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap-MS was established to qualitatively analyse the flavonoid glycosides rich fraction extracted from the aerial part of G. uralensis Fisch., after pretreatment with n-butanol and enrichment using AB-8 macroporous resin. Using both positive and negative ion modes, 52 compounds were identified or tentatively chara

Pharmacological Effects of Licorice (Glycyrrhiza spp.) and Its Bioactive Constituents: The Perspective of Intestinal Microbiota.

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza spp.) is a traditional medicinal plant whose roots and rhizomes possess multiple pharmacological effects. Its core active components include flavonoids, triterpenoids such as glycyrrhizin, and polysaccharides. This paper focuses on licorice's gut microbiota-mediated mechanisms of action. Licorice enhances intestinal barrier integrity and protects gastrointestinal mucosa by upregulating tight junction proteins, activating repair pathways like epidermal growth factor receptor/extracellular regulated protein kinases (EGFR/ERK), and modulating inflammatory signaling via the t

Comparative Efficacy of Haizao Yuhu Decoction Composed of Different Varieties of Glycyrrhiza in Goiter Rats.

In traditional Chinese medicine, Glycyrrhiza and Sargassum are one pair of the "18 incompatible medicaments," which in theory cannot be used together. However, since ancient times, many reports have described using compounds containing both Glycyrrhiza and Sargassum to treat diseases. Haizao Yuhu Decoction (HYD), which contains both ingredients, is mainly used to treat goiter. Chinese Pharmacopoeia officially recorded three varieties of Glycyrrhiza: Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Glycyrrhiza inflata, and Glycyrrhiza glabra. These three varieties have certain differences in chemical composition and pha

Isoliquiritigenin, one of the antispasmodic principles of Glycyrrhiza ularensis roots, acts in the lower part of intestine.

Glycyrrhizae radix is used to treat abdominal pain as a component of shakuyakukanzoto (shaoyao-gancao-tang), a traditional Chinese medicine formulation. Previously, we have reported the isolation of glycycoumarin as a potent antispasmodic with an IC50 value of 2.93+/-0.94 microM for carbamylcholine (CCh)-induced contraction of mouse jejunum from an aqueous extract of Glycyrrhizae radix (licorice), and clarified that its mechanism of action involves inhibition of phosphodiesterase 3. The purpose of the present study was to examine an antispasmodic principle of licorice other than glycycoumarin.

Projecting future distribution of Glycyrrhiza uralensis under climate change: implications for conservation and sustainable management.

BACKGROUND: Climate change poses a significant threat to global ecosystems by altering the geographical distribution of plant species. Glycyrrhiza uralensis, a plant of considerable economic importance, is distributed widely across arid and semi-arid regions. Understanding how its habitat suitability and distribution may shift in response to climate change is crucial for its sustainable management and conservation. This study used species distribution modeling to project current and future distribution patterns of G. uralensis in China and Mongolia, providing a scientific basis for its resourc

Enhancing oral bioavailability and immunostimulatory activity of Glycyrrhiza uralensis polysaccharides through PLGA nanoparticle delivery system.

Glycyrrhiza uralensis polysaccharides (GUPS) are considered safe and effective natural medicine due to their extensive pharmacological activity and low toxicity. However, their large molecular weight (approximately 29 kDa) and high polarity restrict intestinal absorption, resulting in poor oral bioavailability. Here, GUPS-PLGA nanoparticles (GUPS-PLGA NPs, GPN) were prepared and their intestinal absorption characteristics and immunostimulatory activity were evaluated both in vitro and in vivo. Notably, GPN with a high encapsulation rate (63.18%) was prepared by response surface methodology. Fu
