Autochthonous human gnathostomiasis had never been reported in the Republic of Korea. We report here a case of Gnathostoma spinigerum infection in a 32-year-old Korean woman, presumed to have been infected via an indigenous route. The patient had experienced a painful migratory swelling near the left nasolabial fold area of the face for a year, with movement of the swelling to the mucosal area of the upper lip 2 weeks before surgical removal of the lesion. Histopathological examinations of the extracted tissue revealed inflammation with heavy eosinophilic infiltrations and sections of a nemato

To diminish the risk of transmission to humans of advanced third-stage larvae (A3L) of Gnathostoma binucleatum in fish foods, we evaluated the effects of some physical factors on larval viability. A3L protected within fish meatballs were subjected to freezing, refrigeration, boiling, dry heat, and immersion in lemon juice. By freezing, larvae were killed in 48 h, by refrigeration after 30 days, by boiling in 4 min, and by broiling for 60 min. By lemon juice immersion (pH 2.5), encysted larvae were killed after 5 days and nonencysted larvae in 7 h. Results show that freezing fish at -10 to -20°

Gnathostoma spinigerum is a causative agent of human gnathostomiasis and infects people residing in endemic areas as well as travelers. Cutaneous and visceral larval migrants cause clinical manifestations, resulting in severe morbidity and mortality. To survive in hosts, these parasites have evolved various immune evasion mechanisms, including the release of regulatory molecules. Serine protease inhibitors (serpins) that are present in many parasitic helminths are proteins suspected of suppressing host serine protease-related digestion and immune responses. In this study, the serpin secreted b

BACKGROUND: Gnathostoma spinigerum larva is pathogenic, causing gnathostomiasis in humans and certain animals, and is prevalent mainly in Asia. Growth and development of Gnathostoma spinigerum larvae in the cyclopoid copepod Mesocyclops aspericornis, the first intermediate host, were examined.
RESULTS: When newly hatched, ensheathed second-stage larvae (L2) were ingested by M. aspericornis, they immediately appeared exsheathed in the stomach of M. aspericornis. They then penetrated the stomach wall and entered the body cavity, where they immediately metamorphosed to a stunted form with the bo

Seasonality of the nematode Gnathostoma turgidum in Virginia opossums (Didelphis virginiana) in the wild has been reported; however, the mechanisms involved in deworming are unknown. We monitored the parasitologic and biologic changes in four Virginia opossums naturally infected with G. turgidum by coproparasitologic examination and abdominal ultrasonography. Eggs became detectable in the feces of opossums in May, peaked in July and August, and suddenly decreased in October. Adults of G. turgidum were expelled in the feces mainly in September. Ultrasonography of the liver showed slight damage

BACKGROUND: Gnathostomiasis, a helminthic infection commonly reported in Southeast Asia and Latin America, may follow consumption of raw seafood infected with muscle-encysted larvae of Gnathostoma species nematodes. As a result of increasingly exotic tastes for local ethnic dishes, including raw seafood, some regions outside of gnathostome-endemic areas import live species for raw consumption. This may facilitate imported human gnathostomiasis or potentially the establishment of this zoonosis in formerly nonendemic regions. Traveling to a gnathostome-endemic area is no longer a criterion for d

Gnathostomiasis is an emerging systemic parasitic disease acquired by consuming raw or uncooked fresh-water fish infected with the advanced third-stage larvae of Gnathostoma spp. This disease is endemic to the Pacific region of Mexico, and one of its etiologic agents has been identified as Gnathostoma binucleatum. We characterized the humoral immune response of patients clinically diagnosed with gnathostomiasis by detecting total IgM, IgE, and IgG class and subclasses against a crude extract of the parasite by Western blotting. Our results do not show differences in the antigens recognized by

The study on the recognition of 35S-labelled somatic antigens of Gnathostoma spinigerum advanced third-stage larva (aL3) has revealed that the mAb GN6/24 immunoprecipitated 26- and 24-kDa proteins from the undigested and N-glycosidase F-digested larval extracts, respectively. The recognition of the deglycosylated form of the glycoprotein indicated that the mAb reacted with the peptide epitope on the 26-kDa protein. Human gnathostomiasis antiserum immunoprecipitated most of the N-glycosidase F-digested larval proteins including the deglycosylated 26-kDa protein.

During the 6 year period from January 1980 to December 1985 44 patients with infection of the central nervous system by Gnathostoma spinigerum or Angiostrongylus cantonensis were admitted to the Division of Neurology, Ramathibodi Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand. In 16 patients the diagnosis could be confirmed serologically by means of ELISA techniques. In gnathostomiasis encephalitis, myelitis, radiculitis and subarachnoid haemorrhage formed the majority of clinical syndromes. Intracerebral haematoma and transitory obstructive hydrocephalus are described in this report as being caused by Gnathosto

Two human cases of gnathostomiasis from ingestion of raw native Japanese loaches, Misgurnus anguillicaudatus, are reported. Seven early third-stage larval Gnathostoma nipponicum were recovered from 3,098 loaches in the same district in which 2 human patients had obtained and eaten raw loaches. Encapsulated G. nipponicum larvae were also recovered from loaches infected under laboratory conditions. All 6 weasels captured in the same district in which the naturally infected loaches were found and where the humans had become infected were infected with adult worms of the same species. This is the

In order to diagnose gnathostomiasis immunologically, Gnathostoma doloresi was evaluated for the antigenicity in comparison with G. hispidum which was recently reported in Japan by using micro-ELISA. The study revealed that G. doloresi can be used as the alternate source of antigen in the test. A significant increase of specific IgG antibodies was seen in 22 (73.3%) out of 30 gnathostomiasis cases. Although double diffusion was slightly less sensitive than ELISA, it was considered more specific than the latter method.

A 43-year-old male residing in Prachin Buri Province, Thailand, was admitted to the Siriraj University Hospital of Mahidol University, Thailand, in July 2014 with right eyelid swelling and serpiginous lesion for three weeks. A nematode specimen was accidentally recovered from his upper right eyelid area. The body of the worm was cylindrical and measured 11.0 × 1.4 mm. The head bulb had eight circles of transverse spines. Anterior half of the body was covered with rows of comb-like pointed spines. The tail part was rounded dorsally and flattened ventrally and no copulatory spicule was observed

Gnathostoma spinigerum can cause subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). The detection of specific antibodies in serum against G. spinigerum antigen is helpful for diagnosis of neurognathostomiasis. There is limited data on the frequency of G. spinigerum infection in non-traumatic SAH. A series of patients diagnosed as non-traumatic SAH at the Srinagarind Hospital, Khon Kaen University, Thailand between January 2011 and January 2013 were studied. CT or MR imaging of the brain was used for diagnosis of SAH. Patients were categorized as aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (A-SAH) or non-aneurysmal subarac

We report a patient with gnathostomiasis in whom a specific diagnosis of Gnathostoma spinigerum infestation was made morphologically upon removal of the worm. A 47-Year-old Japanese male on a business trip to Vietnam ate fried frog with a Vietnamese friend in January 2002, the friend was diagnosed with gnathostomiasis in June 2002. The patient noted swelling of the right leg with migration to the right arm, prompting him to our hospital in February 2003. Hematologic examination showed eosinophilia, and specific anti-gnathostome antibody was detected by a dot enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (

Gnathostomiasis caused by Gnathostoma doloresi Tubangui was observed in a 46-year-old Japanese man, a clerk, who resided in the Fukuoka prefecture of Kyushu district, in southern Japan. The first symptom noted by the patient was epigastric pain, which occurred 3 days after he had consumed the raw flesh of a brook trout, Oncorhynchus masou masou (Brevoort), from a trout farm in neighbouring Kumamoto prefecture. Three days later, he developed creeping eruptions on his trunk. The eruptions spread and the patient was admitted to hospital 18 days after eating the trout. No nematode larvae were foun

We report a case of eosinophilic meningitis associated with the ingestion of raw fish (Cichla sp.) from the Brazilian Amazon, likely caused by Gnathostoma. A 36-year-old male visited Juruena river on a fishing trip. After 50 days, the patient presented with an intense frontal headache. A cerebrospinal fluid examination revealed 63% eosinophilia. Another individual who ingested raw fish developed linear dermatitis on the abdominal wall. Anti-Gnathostoma serum antibodies were detected, and the patient made a full recovery after treatment with corticosteroids and albendazole. To date, autochthono

OBJECTIVE: The two most common causes of eosinophilic meningitis (EOM) are the parasites: Angiostrongylus cantonensis and Gnathostoma spinigerum. This study aimed to evaluate whether clinical factors can predict either neuroangiostrongyliasis or gnathostomiasis in EOM patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included reports of patients with eosinophils in the CSF and either serological or pathological diagnosis of neuroangiostrongyliasis or gnathostomiasis published in 2014 or earlier and available on PubMed. Predictive clinical models were generated for neuroangiostrongyliasis and gnathostomiasi
