OBJECTIVE: Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) virus is the main infectious cause of goat mortality in Bangladesh, and co-infection may make diseases more severe. This study aimed to detect PPR and co-infecting diseases in goats.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred goats suspected to be infected with the PPR virus were collected from various areas of Mymensingh district, Bangladesh. A systemic post-mortem examination was carried out on PPR-suspected goats. Lungs, spleen, and lymph nodes (pre-scapular) were used for ribonucleic acid extraction, whereas lungs and mesenteric lymph nodes were used fo

Johne's disease (JD) is an economically important infectious disease of ruminants caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP). This study evaluated the differences in various hematological and biochemical parameters between healthy goats and goats with JD. Forty goats were chosen randomly from a herd endemic for JD. A complete physical examination was performed. Blood and fresh fecal samples were collected from each goat. A complete blood cell (CBC) count and a protein electrophoresis were performed. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on fecal samples was performed in order to div

Semiconductor nanocrystals (or quantum dots, QDs) have the potential to overcome some of the limitations encountered by traditional fluorophores in fluorescence labeling applications. The unique spectroscopic properties of QDs make them hold immense promise as versatile labels for biological applications. In this work, we employ the layer-by-layer (LbL) method for the construction of bio-functional multicolor QD-encoded microspheres. Polystyrene microspheres with diameter of 3 microm were used as templates for the deposition of different sized CdTe QDs/polyelectrolyte multilayers. Two differen

Spontaneous and experimental poisoning with the swainsonine-containing and calystegine-containing plant Ipomoea carnea subsp fistulosa is described. Three of 8 goats presenting with emaciation, weakness, symmetrical ataxia, posterior paresis, proprioceptive deficits, abnormal posture, abnormal postural reaction, and muscle hypertonia were necropsied. I fistulosa was suspected to be the cause of the neurologic disease in all cases. An experiment was conducted to confirm the diagnosis using 12 goats and diets containing 3 different concentrations of the plant. All goats fed I fistulosa developed

A controlled test of the efficacy of triclabendazole against all stages (early immature, late immature and mature) of Fasciola hepatica has been performed in experimentally infected goats. The influence of triclabendazole treatment on the pathophysiology of the disease, in terms of haematological parameters and serum enzyme levels, and in the dynamics of production of specific antibodies to excretory/secretory products (ESP) of F. hepatica were also examined. Goats were orally infected with 200 viable metacercarie and treated at 4, 8 and 16 weeks postinfection (PI) with triclabendazole at the

Paratuberculosis (Johne's disease), a chronic granulomatous enteritis caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP), is difficult to diagnose in the subclinical stage(s) because of intermittent shedding and nonspecific immune responses. Given their stability and potential as biomarkers, exosomal microRNAs (miRNAs) were investigated in this study to identify serum-derived candidates associated with Paratuberculosis-associated disease stages in goats. Exosomes were isolated from the serum of three groups: Control (ELISA- and PCR-negative), ENPP (ELISA-negative but PCR-positive)

Goats are important reservoirs of Coxiella burnetii, the causative agent of Q fever in humans. Monitoring infection in goats is therefore essential for effective human disease prevention. However, epidemiological data on C. burnetii infection in Thai goats remain limited, particularly in the central and western regions, where goat farming has expanded. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of C. burnetii infection in goats raised in these two regions. A total of 947 serum samples from 101 herds were collected and tested using a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). I

During the last decade's increase of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in animals, animal-human transmission has become a major threat. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the genetic basis of AMR in Gram-negative bacteria recovered from sheep and goats with respiratory disease. Nasal and ocular swabs were collected from 69 diseased animals, and 76 Gram-negative bacterial isolates were identified from 59 animals. All isolates were checked phenotypically for resistance and genotypically for different resistance mechanisms, including β-lactam, quinolone, and aminoglycoside resistance. Ou

Two goats became affected with an encephalopathy indistinguishable from scrapie 43 months after they were inoculated intracerebrally with 10% suspensions of brain from two persons dying of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Although this observation does not establish the common identity of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease virus and scrapie virus, it is thought to provide strong evidence of a close etiological relationship between the two diseases.

In India, tick-borne diseases are prevalent in many states due to the presence of tick vectors. However, information on disease-causing ticks from domestic animals and the associated risk factors for residents living in the disease-endemic area is lacking. Therefore, we conducted this study to identify ixodid ticks in goats and human risk factors in three villages of the Wayanad district of Kerala. We examined 202 goats and collected 741 ticks, of which 69.8% were ticks belonging to the genus Haemaphysalis. The maximum number of ticks was collected from Thirunelli (81.3%), followed by Noolpuzh

Research has found Alzheimer disease (AD) is accompanied by cognitive dysfunction and gut microbiota imbalance. Goat milk fat globule membrane (GMFGM) derived from goat milk, is a membrane primarily composed of proteins and polar lipids that regulates the gut microbiota. However, its role in AD remains unclear. Therefore, we examined the neuroprotective effects of GMFGM in 5xFAD mice. Supplementation with GMFGM (400 mg/kg bw, 8 weeks) improved cognitive performance, reduced brain Aβ deposition, alleviated neuroinflammation, and upregulated neurotrophic factors. Moreover, GMFGM preserved gut ba

In April 2002, an investigation into an outbreak of acute respiratory disease in goats and sheep in Milae (Afar), Ethiopia was conducted. The investigation involved 4 flocks (722 sheep and 750 goats in total) and comprised the disease history, clinical and post-mortem examination, and microbiological analysis of nasal swabs, lung lesions, and pleural fluid samples. Clinically diseased animals exhibited severe respiratory distress, and necropsy of two of the goats demonstrated fibrinous pneumonia, lung sequestra, and excessive accumulation of straw coloured fluid in the thoracic cavity. Johne's disease (JD) is a chronic enteric infection in ruminants caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP). JD infection is more difficult to diagnose in goats than cattle because MAP can insidiously affect small ruminants. Few reports have used pathological and molecular diagnosis for cases in Korean black goats. Here, we present our results from two MAP-infected goats. Case 1 was categorized as clinically significant (stage IV), with severe clinical signs and a high antibody titer (S/P ratio, 158.9%). Case 2 was in the subclinical stage (stage II); however, the goat sud

Pathogenic Escherichia coli (E. coli) can cause a variety of intestinal and extra-intestinal infections in humans and animals. Similar with the intestinal disease, respiratory disease is also a major threat to the breeding industry of goats. But the reports on respiratory disease associated E. coli are very limited. In this study, E. coli and other pathogens were examined for the 77 submitted respiratory cases. The serotypes, virulence genes, phylogenetic group and antimicrobial resistance characteristics of the E. coli isolates were identified. The results showed that 34 cases (44.16%) were a

Scrapie is a slowly progressive neurodegenerative disease of small ruminants caused by an accumulation of an abnormal isoform of prion protein in the central nervous system. Polymorphisms of the prion protein gene (PRNP) strongly modulate scrapie resistance and incubation period in goats. The aim of this study was to identify PRNP genetic variability in goats across the United States. Blood from a total of 6,029 apparent scrapie disease-free goats from 654 operations and 19 breeds were analyzed. Sequencing of PRNP revealed 26 genotypes with different rates based on eight codons. The GG127, RR1
