Ocean warming exacerbates growth inhibition and alters antioxidant enzyme responses under acute high-level BPA exposure in the commercial red alga Gracilaria lemaneiformis.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a widely distributed emerging contaminant in coastal waters, yet its interactive effects with ocean warming on commercially important macroalgae Gracilaria lemaneiformis remain poorly understood. To investigate how elevated temperature modulates the physiological responses of the red macroalga G. lemaneiformis to BPA stress, we cultured thalli at two temperatures (20 and 24 ℃) across a gradient of BPA concentrations (0, 1, 2.5, 5, and 10 mg L-1) under controlled laboratory conditions. BPA exerted a strong, concentration-dependent inhibition on growth, photosystem II effici

Total Synthesis of Polycavernosides A and B, Two Lethal Toxins from Red Alga.

Polycavernosides A and B are glycosidic macrolide natural products isolated as the toxins causing fatal human poisoning by the edible red alga Gracilaria edulis (Polycavernosa tsudai). Total synthesis of polycavernosides A and B has been achieved via a convergent approach. The synthesis of the macrolactone core structure is highlighted by the catalytic asymmetric syntheses of the two key fragments using hetero-Diels-Alder reaction and Kiyooka aldol reaction as the key steps, their union through Suzuki-Miyaura coupling, and Keck macrolactonization. Finally, glycosylation with the l-fucosyl-d-xy

Dietary seaweed extract mitigates oxidative stress in Nile tilapia by modulating inflammatory response and gut microbiota.

INTRODUCTION: Extreme water temperature affects the well-being of all aquatic animals, including fish. Higher temperatures can lead to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can induce oxidative stress and negatively impact fish health and well-being. This study investigated the protective effects of seaweed extract on growth, antioxidant status, inflammatory responses, and gut microbiota to gain a better understanding of the acclimatization ability of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus in response to oxidative stress caused by high water temperatures. METHODS: Red-seaweed, G

Structural characterization of a sulfated polysaccharide from Gracilariadomingensis and potential anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects.

Seaweeds are natural sources of sulfated polysaccharides (SPs), biopolymers with remarkable pharmacological properties, including biological actions capable of attenuating components of the inflammatory process such as edema, cytokines, cell migration and pain. Our results confirm that SPs obtained from Gracilaria domingensis (SP-GD) are agarans, primarily composed of residues of β-d-galactopyranose 6-sulfate and 3,6-anhydro-α-l-galactopyranose. Specifically, SP-GD at a dose of 10 mg/kg was effective in significantly reducing paw edema induced by carrageenan or histamine, serotonin, bradykinin
