Prevalence of bacterial bloodstream infections and association between neutropenia and 30-day mortality among oncology inpatients at a university hospital in Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Cancer patients are highly prone to develop bacterial bloodstream infections (BSI) and are also at risk of neutropenia. Knowledge of the prevalence of these infections and whether neutropenia is associated with a change in mortality is important to more effective management and reducing mortality and morbidity. OBJECTIVES: Estimate the prevalence of bacterial BSI among oncology inpatients and assess the associations of 30-day mortality with Gram stain results and neutropenia. DESIGN: Retrospective cross-sectional SETTING: University hospital in Saudi Arabia. PATIENTS AND METHODS

Comparative in vitro activity of ceftaroline and comparator agents against nosocomial Gram-negative and Gram-positive clinically significant bacterial isolates from patients in a teaching hospital in Kuwait.

The objective was to test the in vitro activities of ceftaroline and comparator agents against clinical isolates of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Isolates were identified with VITEK II. Susceptibility testing was with E test. A total of 1264 isolates were tested. Compared to other cephalosporins, ceftaroline demonstrated excellent in vitro activities (MIC90, ≤0.5 mg/L) against Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp. and Haemophilus influenzae. When matched with the comparator cephalosporins, ceftaroline demonstrated the greatest activity against methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aur

Antibiotic resistance among bacterial pathogens in Central Africa: a review of the published literature between 1955 and 2008.

A systematic review of the published literature on bacterial resistance in Central Africa between 1955 and 2008 was performed. Eighty-three publications from seven countries were retrieved, the majority presenting data on enteric and other gram-negative pathogens. Despite methodological limitations in many studies, alarming resistance rates are noted in nearly all pathogens. Of special concern are multidrug resistance in Shigella and Salmonella spp. and the emergence of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, high-level penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae and extended-spectrum be

Cutibacterium acnes molecular typing: time to standardize the method.

BACKGROUND: The Gram-positive, anaerobic/aerotolerant bacterium Cutibacterium acnes is a commensal of healthy human skin; it is subdivided into six main phylogenetic groups or phylotypes: IA1, IA2, IB, IC, II and III. To decipher how far specific subgroups of C. acnes are involved in disease physiopathology, different molecular typing methods have been developed to identify these subgroups: i.e. phylotypes, clonal complexes, and types defined by single-locus sequence typing (SLST). However, as several molecular typing methods have been developed over the last decade, it has become a difficult

[Glycopeptide heteroresistance and tolerance in hospital grampositive isolates: "invisible" phenomena to the clinician with clinical implications?].

This article reviews the concepts of heteroresistance and tolerance to glycopeptides in gram-positive bacteria isolated from hospitalised patients. Heteroresistance (resistant subpopulations among the total bacterial population of the strain, that can be selected by the treatment) and tolerance (capability of survival, but not growth, in the presence of usually lethal antibiotic concentrations) have in common several characteristics: 1) the absence of its determination in laboratory daily practice, 2) they implied a decrease in antimicrobial activity not reflected in MIC values (thus being "in

Effects of polymyxin B haemoperfusion on septic shock caused by Gram-positive bacteria.

Polymyxin B haemoperfusion is commonly used to adsorb endotoxins in septic shock caused by Gram-negative bacterial infections. Polymyxin B haemoperfusion has been reported to improve hypotension in Gram-positive bacterial infections; however, its efficacy and mechanism in treating such cases are unclear. We hypothesised that polymyxin B haemoperfusion would be equally effective in improving haemodynamics during Gram-positive bacterial infections as in Gram-negative bacterial infections. We conducted a retrospective study that included patients with septic shock admitted to the intensive care u

Eradication of Antibiotic-Resistant Gram-Positive Bacteria and Biofilms by Rationally Designed AIE-Active Iridium(III) Complexes Derived from Cyclometalating 2-Phenylquinoline and Ancillary Bipyridyl Ligands.

Antibiotic resistance caused by Gram-positive bacteria is a growing global human health threat. Selective discrimination and eradication of Gram-positive bacteria and their biofilms is challenging. Therapeutic strategies with multiple modes of action are urgently needed to address the increase in Gram-positive bacteria-resistant nosocomial infections. In this work, we have presented rationally designed aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active cationic cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes derived from 2-phenylquinoline and 2,2'-bipyridine ligands for Gram-positive antibacterial studies. The A

Differential effects of dexmedetomidine on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial killing and phagocytosis.

Dexmedetomidine is a commonly used sedative in perioperative and intensive care settings with purported immunomodulatory properties. Since its effects on immune functions against infections have not been extensively studied, we tested the effects of dexmedetomidine on Gram-positive [Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis] and Gram-negative bacteria [Escherichia coli], and on effector functions of human monocytes THP-1 cells against them. We evaluated phagocytosis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, and CD11b activation, and performed RNA sequencing analyses. Our study revealed t

Survey of the susceptibility of urinary isolates to antibacterial agents in 2003.

In 2003, 826 uropathogenic strains were obtained from the urine of our patients. We assessed their activities to antibacterial agents based on the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) breakpoints recommended by the National Committee for Clinical Standards (NCCLS). Methicillin-resistant strains accounted for about 70% of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. The most common gram-positive species was Enterococcus faecalis (15.6%). Enterococcus faecium was the most resistant of the enterococcal species, and the rate of susceptibility to beta-lactams (BLs), fluoroquinolones (FQs

Cefditoren in vitro activity and spectrum: a review of international studies using reference methods.

Cefditoren, a broad-spectrum orally administered cephalosporin ester, has documented in vitro efficacy against many Gram-positive and -negative pathogens and stability against clinically important beta-lactamases. We have reviewed the microbiology and the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic literature regarding the spectrum and potency of this newer agent against the major etiologic agents of community-acquired respiratory infection, (Streptococcus pneumoniae, Hemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis), as well as the Enterobacteriaceae and non-enteric Gram-negative bacilli, staphylococci, a

Shifting of Distribution and Changing of Antibiotic Resistance in Gram-Positive Bacteria from Bile of Patients with Acute Cholangitis.

BACKGROUND: Gram-negative bacteria are the predominant pathogens responsible for biliary infections; however, the prevalence of Gram-positive bacteria is currently increasing. Investigating the bacterial spectrum and evolving antibiotic resistance patterns of Gram-positive bacteria is crucial for optimizing the management of acute cholangitis, particularly in the context of the global rise in antibiotic resistance. METHODS: This retrospective analysis focused on Gram-positive bacteria isolated from the bile of patients undergoing biliary drainage with acute cholangitis at our hospital from Ja

Advances and updates in antibiotic combination therapy.

INTRODUCTION: While antibiotic combination therapy remains a common clinical practice, its scientific foundation is fragile. The available evidence is fragmented, biased, and fails to capture the complexity of modern infectious disease scenarios. This perspective reinterprets the role of combination therapy through a critical lens, challenging current dogmas and proposing a pathogen-specific approach, focusing also on severe acute infections. AREAS COVERED: This Critical Perspective focused on selected studies from 2018 to 2025 identified through a focused PubMed search on the place in therap

Tachypleus lysate test for endotoxin in patients with Gram negative bacterial infections.

Amoebocyte lysate from the horseshoe crabs (Tachypleus gigas) which abounds in the Gulf of Thailand was used to detect endotoxin in patients with Gram-negative bacteremia, in patients with Gram-positive bacterial infections as well as in the control. The Tachypleus lysate test (TLT) was positive in 94.4% of 36 patients with Gram-negative bacteremia before initiation of antibiotic therapy. Only 4% of 50 healthy individuals were positive and all 7 patients with Gram-positive bacterial infections were negative. The threshold sensitivity of TLT was 0.625 micrograms endotoxin per ml of the plasma.
