A 16-year-old boy had pain and swelling in the left wrist 6 months after he had fallen on a twig. Erosion of the triquetrum and pisiform was seen on x-ray films. A granulomatous process was identified at operation. Despite numerous cultures and special stains, no organisms were identified. Wood debris was seen under high-power magnification. A wooden foreign body may cause bone and joint destruction through a granulomatous process. In this case, surgical debridement and excision stopped the destructive process.

A conjunctival foreign-body (FB) granuloma may result following trauma with synthetic and non-synthetic materials including organic and non-organic objects. Children usually manifest with FB granulomas that develop due to inoculation of FBs from soft toys, blankets or woollen clothes. A 54-year-old man complained of a growing nodule in the left upper arm, which was diagnosed as diffuse large B-cell lymphoma by postsurgical pathology. For baseline assessment, FDG PET/CT revealed intense uptake in the left upper arm, in addition to FDG-avid pleura lesions and regional, axillary, cervical, and mediastinal lymph nodes. A 68-year-old man presented with progressive forefoot swelling which coincided with the onset of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Imaging revealed a cystic inter-metatarsal mass containing two foreign bodies, which had been present for many years. Following aspiration of the mass, cholesterol crystals were observed on polarised microscopy. It is postulated that the development of diabetes triggered the shedding of cholesterol crystals around a long-standing quiescent foreign body granuloma.

BACKGROUND: In cranial surgery, different foreign body (FB) materials are used and may be left intentionally or unintentionally in the surgical field after closure, inducing a foreign body granuloma (FBG). This is a rare complication in neurosurgery, but it may be a diagnostic dilemma, with sometimes medicolegal implications.
METHODS: We performed a systematic review of the English literature between 1965 and 2018 and found a total of 77 articles concerning 100 cases of FBG caused by retained material located within the cranium or surrounding soft tissues.

Receiving total parenteral nutrition (TPN) can cause a granulomatous angiocentric pulmonary response that can lead to sudden death because of acute heart and lung failure. Here we report a case of a 57-year-old woman known with short bowel syndrome and therefore has received TPN for many years. This caused precipitation and embolisation of foreign material in the lungs, and she died of respiratory and heart failure. This case study emphasises the importance of increased attention to patients receiving TPN for extended periods of time.

The use of soft tissue fillers for cosmetic purposes has increased in recent years, accompanied by increasing complications. We report a case of foreign body granuloma after absorbable filler injection requiring surgical management. A subcutaneous cheek mass developed in a 60-year-old woman after hyaluronic acid and polycaprolactone-based filler (Ellansé) injection.
