Central Giant Cell Granuloma: A potential endodontic misdiagnosis.

Central Giant Cell Granulomas (CGCGs) may manifest as radiolucencies anywhere in the mandible or maxilla. In rare cases, it can appear as a localized periradicular area and mimic an endodontic lesion. This case report presents an uncommon location of CGCG which was not accurately diagnosed nor timely treated. Periodic follow ups of periapical radiolucencies after RCT are necessary. Dentists should include CGCG in differential diagnosis of lesions that are refractory to endodontic treatment. [Iranian Endodontic Journal 2009;4(4):158-60].

Giant cell reparative granuloma of the temporal bone.

Giant cell reparative granuloma (GCRG) is an uncommon non-neoplastic reactive tumor that occurs almost exclusively within the mandible and maxilla and can be locally aggressive. Only sporadic cases involving the skull base have been reported. However, this lesion is probably underappreciated because it might be unrecognized or misdiagnosed. We present a case of GCRG of the left temporal bone that was treated surgically via a combined transtemporal-subtemporal approach. A short literature review about diagnosis, clinical behavior and treatment of this tumor entity is given.

Giant cell reparative granuloma of the sphenoid bone.

We present 2 patients with giant cell reparative granuloma (GCRG) of the sphenoid bone. The first patient is an 8-year-old boy with involvement of the greater wing, and the second is a 53- year-old man with a lateral pterygoid plate mass. Both patients presented with rapid expansion of lytic bone lesions, which had solid and cystic components and lacked matrix calcification. Biopsies were indeterminate for definitive diagnoses. The radiologic appearance, location, and incidence of the lesions, and the patient's age and medical history are helpful aids in narrowing the differential diagnosis of

Giant cell granuloma of the maxilla: case report.

Giant cell granuloma is an uncommon bony lesion in the head and neck region, most commonly affecting the maxilla and mandible. Although it is a benign disease process, it can also be locally destructive. Surgery is the traditional and still the most accepted treatment for giant cell granuloma. The case described here involved the maxilla which was treated with surgical excision, followed by local injection of steroids.

Peripheral giant cell granuloma associated with dental implants.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) is a well-circumscribed lesion confined to the alveolar and gingival mucosa. PGCG is considered a reactive lesion caused by local irritation or trauma. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the incidence of PGCG in peri-implant lesions submitted for histologic examination, to establish its correlation with implant failure, and to discuss its pathogenesis. METHODS: The study was conducted on 25 periimplant biopsy specimens submitted for histological examination between 1999 and 2001. Sections (5 microm) of paraffin embedded tiss

Peripheral giant-cell granuloma. Review of 13 cases.

Peripheral giant-cell granuloma is an infrequent exophytic lesion of the oral cavity, also known as giant-cell epulis, osteoclastoma, giant-cell reparative granuloma, or giant-cell hyperplasia. The present study reports 13 cases on patients that visited the Oral Medicine department of the Dental Faculty in the Santiago de Compostela University. We report the location, size, course and treatment of each lesion, comparing the results obtained to those reported in the literature. We discuss differential diagnosis with respect to other entities, in particular brown tumor of hyperparathyroidism, ch

Giant cell reparative granuloma of the temporal bone.

Giant cell reparative granuloma (GCRG) is an uncommon non-neoplastic lesion that typically occurs in the mandible and maxilla: however, its involvement with the temporal bone is rare. It is usually misdiagnosed as a giant cell tumor. Although regarded as a benign process, GCRG may be locally aggressive. In this paper, we describe two cases of GCRG of the temporal bone and review the pertinent literature published in English. The clinical course, histological evaluation, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of GCRG of the temporal bone were investigated.

Advanced giant cell granuloma: a twenty-year study.

Giant cell granuloma is a benign lesion that generally involves the mandible and maxilla. It may be locally aggressive and result in extensive tissue destruction in advanced cases. A retrospective analysis of giant cell granuloma during the interval 1970 to 1990 revealed 18 cases of advanced disease, as defined by bone destruction and a greatest dimension of 2.0 cm or more. Epidemiologic factors, physical findings, imaging studies, pathologic specimens, treatment modalities, and outcome were reviewed for each case. Eight lesions were treated by local excision and curettage, and 10 were treated

A peripheral giant cell granuloma with extensive osseous metaplasia or a hybrid peripheral giant cell granuloma-peripheral ossifying fibroma: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral giant cell granuloma and peripheral ossifying fibroma are clinicopathologically distinct gingival lesions. Both are included in clinical differential diagnoses of common benign and reactive gingival epulides in humans. It is often impossible to make a clinical distinction between the two entities, thereby making definitive diagnosis dependent on histopathologic features. While our search of the English literature revealed several reports of peripheral giant cell granuloma with 'bone formation', we were unable to identify any reports of hybrid peripheral ossifying fibro

Adult T cell leukemia accompanied by annular elastolytic giant cell granuloma.

We report a 74-year-old Japanese patient with adult T-cell leukemia who concurrently developed annular elastolytic giant cell granuloma. Initially, itchy granulomatous lesions developed on his face, nape of the neck and dorsa of the hands, but gradually erythematous plaques appeared on the back and lower limbs. The histology of the granulomatous lesions revealed coexistence of an epithelioid cell granuloma with giant cells that phagocytosed elastic fibres in the dermis and Pautrier's microabscesses in the overlying epidermis. Subsequent sequential histological studies of an erythematous plaque

Maxillary Giant Cell Granuloma: A Long-Term Follow-Up.

A case of a 32-year-old female with a known diagnosis of Turner syndrome who presented with complaints of chronic progressive right-sided facial pain and sinus pressure and who was afebrile. On physical examination, there was eye proptosis on the right and significant increased fullness in the right infraorbital and maxillary regions. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a large expansile space-occupying lesion in the right maxillary area that histologically turned out to be a giant cell reparative granuloma. The lesion was completely removed, and of interest, the pa

Peripheral Giant Cell Granuloma Associated With Periodontal Intrabony Defect.

INTRODUCTION: The peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) is associated with periodontal bony lesions in several situations and excision results in a soft papilla defect and an intrabony defect without soft tissue protection. CASE PRESENTATION: A PGCG associated with loss of periodontal support is described. Following the lesion excision, a specific flap design outlining a surgical papilla in the adjacent area was proposed. The aim of this flap design was to obtain an optimal condition for periodontal regeneration, to treat the lesion excision associated with soft tissue defect, and to avoid a

Giant cell reparative granuloma of the hallux following enchondroma.

Giant cell reparative granuloma (GCRG) is a rare, benign intra osseous lytic lesion occurring especially in gnathis bone but also seen in feet and hands. It has similar clinical and radiological presentations than giant cell tumor, chondroblastoma, aneurysmal bone cyst, and hyperparathyroidism brown tumors but with specific histological findings We report a case of a GCRG of hallux phalanx in 18 years old patient appearing many years after enchondroma curettage and grafting. Radiographs showed a multiloculated osteolytic lesions involving whole phalanx with cortical thinning and without fluid-

Peripheral giant cell granuloma associated with a dental implant.

A 56-year-old woman was referred for the treatment of a mandibular lesion that had been slowly increasing in size over a 6-month period. Intraoral examination revealed a reddish-purple nodule involving the attached vestibular gingiva around a machined-surface dental implant that had been placed 2 years earlier in the mandibular left second premolar region. Another implant had been placed in the mandibular left second molar region. The lesion was tender and bled easily upon tooth brushing. Radiographs showed inadequate abutment angulation. The healing caps on these 2 implants were loose and in

Central Giant Cell Granuloma of Maxilla: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Our study aimed to compare the outcomes of surgical treatment of tongue cancer patients in three different age groups. METHODS: From 2004 to 2013, we retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 1,712 patients who were treated in the four institutions constituting the Chang Gung Memorial Hospitals (CGMH). We divided and studied the patients in three age groups: Group 1, younger (<65 years); Group 2, young old (65 to <75); and Group 3, older old patients (≥75 years). RESULTS: Multivariate analyses determined the unfavorable, independent prognostic factors of overall survival to b
