Immunoglobulin synthesizing plasma cells for IgG were quantitated in 20 periapical granulomas and 20 periapical cysts, using unlabelled antibody peroxidase-antiperoxidase complex method. Result showed that immunoglobulin G producing plasma cells were predominant in periapical cyst as compared with periapical granuloma. A statistical significant relation was observed between these two lesions.

The case of a 10-year-old girl with plasma cell granuloma of the lung and an associated hypergammaglobulinemia is reported. A thoracotomy and biopsy were done. Total resection would have required a pneumonectomy. She was treated with an immunosuppressive course of prednisone, which resulted in a reversal of the infiltrative process and the hypergammaglobulinemia.

Plasma cell granulomas of the central nervous system are exceedingly rare. Of the six well-documented cases that have been published to date, five plasma cell granulomas were intracranial and one was located in the spinal meninges. Multiple plasma cell granulomas of the central nervous system have not previously been reported. We now report a patient who had two plasma cell granulomas in the spinal meninges and one in the anterior cerebral falx. The histological findings that differentiate this rare lesion from other central nervous system lesions, such as plasmacytoma and meningioma, are disc

The clinicopathologic features of two rare cases of plasma cell granuloma of the endocrine glands are described and compared with extrapulmonary cases reported in the literature. One was localized in the adrenal gland and was revealed by amenorrhea and a large inflammatory syndrome; it is the first case reported to our knowledge. The other case developed in the thyroid, was asymptomatic, and represents the third case in the literature.

A ten-year-old girl presented with an asymptomatic tumor of the lung. X-ray morphology suggested malignancy. Laboratory investigations revealed hypochromic anaemia, strong signs of inflammation, and hypergammaglobulinaemia. By means of surgery the tumor was completely removed. Histologic analysis established the diagnosis of a plasma cell granuloma. Postoperatively, laboratory parameters normalized. During the follow-up period of now 30 months there has been no relapse.

We report 2 rare cases of IgG4-related plasma cell granuloma of the maxillary sinus. Histologically, both lesions were characterized by severe lymphoplasmacytic infiltration. In 1 case, fibrous sclerosis and obliterative arteritis were observed. Immunohistochemical study demonstrated that IgG4-positive cells comprised more than 40% of the IgG-positive plasma cells. Moreover, the serum IgG4 level was elevated in both cases. A good responsiveness to steroid therapy has been seen in IgG4-related disease. From a therapeutic perspective, it is important to recognize IgG4-related plasma cell granulo

Meningeal and intracerebral plasma cell granulomas are uncommon inflammatory lesions of unknown etiology. In this paper the diagnostic difficulties in two patients with meningeal plasma cell granuloma and one patient with intracerebral plasma cell granuloma are described. The first patient had an intracranial extra-axial lesion, which was first diagnosed as a meningioma. One and a half years later she underwent a second resection for recurrent tumor growth and the diagnosis of a meningeal plasma cell granuloma was made. The second patient was treated for a central nervous system B-cell lymphom

Plasma cell granuloma is mainly composed of reactive plasma cell proliferation, the origin of which is uncertain. Immunohistochemically, the plasma cells are characterized by a polyclonal nature, and must be distinguished from plasmacytoma which displays a monoclonal nature. This tumor is most commonly found in the lung and bronchus, but has rarely been described in the alimentary tract. We report herein a case of plasma cell granuloma of the transverse colon. A 71-year-old woman was admitted for lower abdominal pain with severe inflammation and anemia. Ultrasound examination and computed tomo

A histological variant of plasma cells found in the granulomas of cat-scratch disease (CSD) lymphadenitis is reported. Though the lesion shows the typical features of suppurative granulomatous lymphadenitis, many atypical giant cells which have abundant basophilic cytoplasm and bizarre nuclei with occasional multinucleated forms are noted among epithelioid histiocytes. The diagnosis of CSD lymphadenitis was confirmed by comparing clinical; histopathological, and histochemical (Warthin-Starry silver impregnation stain) studies on lymph node sections from five cases with features typical of the

Introduction. We present a case of an 89-year-old female who attended our surgical endocrine clinic with a 3-month history of a left-sided neck lump. There was no past medical history of thyroid disease. Methods. Following examination and further investigation, including core biopsy, a diagnosis of plasma cell granuloma of the thyroid was made. Biochemical testing of thyroid function and Thyroid Peroxidase Antibody was in-keeping with an associated Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Results. The patient was treated conservatively with thyroxine and regularly seen in clinic. TSH levels improved and the l

Plasma cell granulomas, inflammatory pseudotumours and myofibroblastomas are synonymous with characteristic plasma cell infiltration in various body organs including the pancreas, liver, retroperitoneum and mediastinal structures causing idiopathic fibrosclerosis. Recently, a new concept has arisen regarding the relationship between immunoglobulin (Ig)G4-positive cell infiltration and idiopathic systemic fibrosclerosis. We report two cases showing IgG4-positive cell infiltration in the lung presenting as lung nodules with or without extrapulmonary manifestations.

Three cases of pulmonary plasma cell granuloma in the pediatric age group are presented. Although rare, it is the most frequent primary lung tumor in childhood. In two of the cases, there was a close adherence between the tumor and the surrounding mediastinal structures and diaphragm, a very uncommon feature in these tumors. In the other case, plasma cell granuloma of the lung was seen in association with a clinical-radiological picture of hypertrophic osteoarthropathy, which resolved after excision of the mass. Such an association has not, to date, been reported in the literature, and could c

Plasma cell granulomas (PCG) are rare tumor-like lesions consisting of sheets of polyclonal plasma cells admixed with numerous lymphocytes and other inflammatory cells surrounded by fibrous stroma. They usually appear in the lung, but involvement of diverse extrapulmonal sites has been described. PCGs occurring in the thyroid are very uncommon. Since 1981, only 11 cases have been described in the English literature. Here, we present the case of a 50-year-old Arabic man who noticed an enlargement of his thyroid gland during the previous 2 years, and he developed swallowing disturbances and a fe

Despite many studies on the topic, plasma cells found in human periapical chronic inflammatory lesions (granulomas) continue to present unresolved issues. In this study, we tried to assess quantitatively and qualitatively the nature of plasma cells of 4 human periapical granulomas. Samples were analyzed for relative amounts of IgG-, IgM-, IgA-, and IgE-positive plasma cells by immunohistochemistry, and for morphological changes by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). By immunohistochemistry, many plasma cells stained positively with anti-IgG and anti-IgM antibodies; fewer cells reacted with

Plasma cell granuloma (PCG) is a pseudotumor of unknown origin. It is frequently accompanied by acute-phase clinical and biological signs that resume after complete surgical removal, suggesting production of soluble mediators. We therefore investigated the role of cytokines in a previously healthy 10-year-old boy with a PCG of the lung and systemic symptoms. In this case, very high serum levels of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were found before tumor excision, associated with inflammatory signs including major hyper-gamma-globulinemia. Pathologic analysis of the tumor

Plasma cell granuloma is a pseudoneoplastic lesion composed of reactive plasma cells of a polyclonal nature and must be distinguished from plasmacytoma. We report a case of plasma cell granuloma in the sigmoid colon associated with diverticulosis. In this case, the lesion consisted of multiple submucosal tumors with prominent infiltration of polyclonal plasma cells. Although the patient exhibited IgM-type monoclonal gammopathy, the expression of a monoclonal immunoglobulin was not detected in the sigmoid colonic lesion, but in the bone marrow cells. Plasma cell granuloma in the lower alimentar

This report describes four cases of a previously undocumented circumscribed idiopathic inflammatory fibrosclerotic lesion of the skin. The lesions occurred in two black women and two white men; they had been apparent from months to a year. The nodules were solitary; two were located on the arm, one on the calf, and one on the posterior neck. The clinical diagnoses included nodules, keratinous cyst, pilar tumor, pilomatricoma, vascular leiomyoma, dermatofibroma, and metastatic carcinoma. The lesions were grossly white, homogeneous, and circumscribed; one was located in the superficial subcutis

The aim of the study was to test the hypothesis that oral plasma cell granuloma may represent a mucosal manifestation of immunoglobulin (Ig)G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) in the oral cavity. The study sample comprised two males and four females, aged 54-79 years (median 62 years). The lesions were localized on gingival/alveolar mucosa (four cases), hard palate, and floor of the mouth, measuring 17-40 mm (median 31 mm). The duration of the lesions ranged from 3 months to several years. Information on IgG4 serum levels was available for two patients, and these were increased to 1.85 and 1.65 g/L,
