Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis is a rare inflammatory breast disease affecting women aged 20-40 years, which can mimic infectious or neoplastic mastitis. This retrospective study at Saint-Louis Hospital, Paris, France, from 2010 to 2023, analysed histologically confirmed disease in 19 patients to refine its clinical and pathological features and evaluate treatments. Clinically, 89% of patients presented with one or more erythematous breast masses, often associated with abscesses, adenopathy, nipple retraction, oedema or fistulas. Histology showed large perilobular granulomas with polymorphi

Granulomatous mastitis (GM) is a rare, benign, but chronic and recurrent inflammatory breast disease that significantly impacts physical and psychological well-being. It often presents symptoms such as pain, swelling, and discharge, leading to diagnostic confusion with malignancy. The etiology of GM remains unclear, though autoimmune and multifactorial components are suspected. This study aimed to explore the genetic underpinnings of GM using whole-exome sequencing (WES) on 22 GM patients and 52 healthy controls to identify single nucleotide variants (SNVs) and copy number variations (CNVs) po

Granulomatous lobular mastitis (GLM) is a rare inflammatory breast disease, and there are few reports of GLM in pregnancy (GLMIP). Therefore, this study retrospectively analyzed cases diagnosed with GLMIP from 2011 to 2023 and found that in patients with GLMIP there were varied demographic manifestations such as age, pregnancy weeks, and numbers of pregnancy and delivery, and several associated complications including erythema nodosum, arthritis and lower extremity edema. Among them, 82.8% of the patients received integrated traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and western medicine treatment, an

Background: We have already known that idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a rare benign chronic inflammatory disorder that can clinically mimic breast carcinoma, especially affects parous women of childbearing age, but there is little literature to report about pregnancy associated granulomatous mastitis (PAGM). The aim of our study is to report and describe the clinical signs, managements, clinical course, and clinical outcomes after treatment of PAGM in our hospital. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 15 pregnant patients who were diagnosed as PAGM in our hospital collected from De

Since idiopathic granulomatous lobular mastitis, also known as idiopathic granulomatous mastitis or granulomatous lobulitis, was first described by Kessler and Wolloch in 1972, no consensus on the ideal and definitive treatment for this phenomenon has been reached thus far. Idiopathic granulomatous lobular mastitis mostly frequently observed in women of childbearing age within a few years of pregnancy with a higher incidence in patients of Hispanic, Native American, Middle Eastern, and African descent. This entity, per se, is a rare, benign, chronic inflammatory breast condition of unknown aet

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a rare, chronic inflammatory disease of the breast. The aetiology is unknown. Erythema nodosum (EN) is a rare skin disease associated with IGM. EN is a disease in which the aetiologic factors include infection, malignancy, autoimmune diseases, and pregnancy.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the incidence and coexistence of EN with IGM and the approach to treatment.
METHODS: Patients who were admitted to the General Surgery and Dermatology Department of our hospital and diagnosed with EN and IGM were evaluated. Demog

Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a rare benign inflammatory breast entity characterized by lobulocentric granulomas. IGM has a persistent or recurrent disease course and affects parous premenopausal women with a history of lactation. It has also been associated with hyperprolactinemia. The most common clinical sign is a palpable tender mass. However, the nonspecific manifestations and varied demographic features of this condition, as well as the other similar-appearing and superimposed breast entities, pose substantial diagnostic challenges. Entities with similar manifestations inclu

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a benign, aseptic inflammatory disease of unknown origin, which must be distinguished from tumoral and infectious processes that affect the breast, including tuberculosis. IGM is a rare cause of erythema nodosum, but it is useful for dermatologists to be aware of this association.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 32-year-old nulliparous woman presented with erythema nodosum, arthralgia and fever. On examination, she had a firm and painful mass of 5cm in the right breast with retraction and axillary adenopathy. The breast lump developed gradually o

Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a rare inflammatory breast lesion of unknown etiology that occurs in women of childbearing age; only a few hundred cases have been reported worldwide. A breast cancer mimic, IGM also is diagnosed by breast biopsy. On December 12, 2008, a physician in Indianapolis, Indiana, reported a cluster of seven IGM diagnoses in multigravid Hispanic women, an unusually high number. To evaluate the etiology of the breast masses and characterize associated epidemiologic and clinical features, the Indiana State Department of Health and CDC conducted a multidisciplin

OBJECTIVE: Granulomatous mastitis (GM) is a chronic inflammatory breast disease with a heterogeneous clinical presentation and uncertain optimal management. Increasing evidence suggests a role for Corynebacterium species, particularly Corynebacterium kroppenstedtii, in its pathogenesis. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics, treatment strategies, and outcomes of granulomatous mastitis, with particular emphasis on cases associated with Corynebacterium species and the impact of antibiotic therapy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included female patient

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a rare, benign, chronic inflammatory breast disease that frequently mimics infection or malignancy, resulting in diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Although erythema nodosum is a recognized extramammary manifestation, it occurs in approximately 10% of cases and may further obscure timely diagnosis. Our objective is to present a rare case of granulomatous mastitis and highlight the challenges associated with its diagnosis and management.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 25-year-old Hispanic female who presented with persistent

Granulomatous lobular mastitis (GLM) is a rare, chronic, and benign inflammatory breast disease predominantly affecting women of reproductive age. It is clinically characterized by breast masses, pain, erythema, and the potential development of abscesses and fistulas. The etiology remains complex, involving autoimmune responses, bacterial infections, and hormonal imbalances. Currently, there is no standardized consensus on the optimal management of GLM. Conventional treatment modalities, including systemic corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, and surgical excision, are frequently constrained b

Cystic neutrophilic granulomatous mastitis (CNGM) is a rare type of granulomatous lobular mastitis (GLM) with a distinct histologic pattern characterized on histopathology by clear lipid vacuoles lined by peripheral neutrophils ("suppurative lipogranulomas"), often containing gram-positive bacilli and strongly associated with Corynebacterial infection (in particular, Corynebacterium kroppenstedtii). Cystic neutrophilic granulomatous mastitis has a distinct histopathologic appearance, but the imaging appearance is less well described and has been limited to case reports and small case series pu

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a challenging chronic inflammatory disease in diagnosis with unknown etiology. Although the most appropriate treatment protocol has not yet been identified, prednisolone was used in our patient as an effective and practical choice in the treatment of IGM.
ABSTRACT: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the breast and mimics disorders such as breast cancer and breast abscess. Due to the uncommon of this disease, there is no definitive etiology, or treatment. A 38-year-old woman presented wit

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Granulomatous mastitis is a rare inflammatory disorder of the breast, which can be either idiopathic or due to secondary etiology. This disease affects women of reproductive age. The exact pathophysiology underlying idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) remains unclear, but it is believed to be mediated by immunological processes. Establishing a diagnosis of this condition could be challenging due to the long list of differential diagnoses that it creates.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 24-year-old Syrian female presented to the clinic complaining of a 2-week hi

Granulomatous inflammation is an uncommon inflammatory condition of the breast that includes both infectious (bacterial, fungal, parasitic) and noninfectious (autoimmune, sarcoidosis, idiopathic granulomatous mastitis [IGM], reaction to foreign materials) etiologies. IGM is the most common subset of granulomatous inflammation where no underlying etiology is established. Infectious causes of granulomatous inflammation should be excluded, as these have established treatments that can significantly improve patient outcomes. IGM should be considered in the differential when mastitis is refractory

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) often mimics breast cancer. Presentation includes pain, palpable mass, suppuration or suspicious imaging. Widely reported in Asia and the Middle East, IGM is diagnosed after excluding specific granulomatous mastitis (SGM). Aetiology remains unknown. Lactation, prolactinaemia, ethnicity, autoimmune disease and Corynebacteria are associated. Treatment is controversial and the prevalence rising. Surgery and non-operative treatments including antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), steroids, methotrexate and observation hav
