Graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) serve as a highly tunable platform for exploring phonon-mediated superconductivity in lightweight materials. While theoretical models have long predicted that densely packed, first-stage (stage-1) sodium-intercalated graphite (Na-GIC) could host elevated critical temperatures (Tc), its experimental synthesis has remained a formidable challenge. Here, we report the realization of stage-1 Na-GIC that exhibits bulk superconductivity and achieves a maximum onset Tc of ∼31 K, setting a record for all known GIC systems. By employing a room-temperature mechanic

It is now known that in addition to electrons, other quasiparticles such as phonons and magnons can also generate a thermal Hall signal. Graphite is a semimetal with extremely mobile charge carriers of both signs and a large lattice thermal conductivity. We present a study of the thermal Hall effect in highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) samples with electronic, phononic, and phonon drag contributions to the thermal Hall signal. The measured thermal Hall conductivity (κ_{xy}) is 2 orders of magnitude higher than what is expected by electronic carriers according to the electrical Hall con

Ultrafast photoexcitation can drive solids far from equilibrium by dynamically renormalizing their electronic structure, yet direct time-domain access to bulk band-structure reshaping with orbital and momentum selectivity has remained limited. Here, we show in photoexcited graphite that femtosecond carbon K-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), used in the time domain, provides a momentum- and orbital-selective spectroscopic fingerprint of transient valence-band reshaping. Momentum- and orbital-selective measurements along the [Formula: see text] contour disentangle [Formula: see te

Graphite has been intensively studied, yet its electron spins dynamics remains an unresolved problem even 70 years after the first experiments. The central quantities, the longitudinal (T1) and transverse (T2) relaxation times were postulated to be equal, mirroring standard metals, but T1 has never been measured for graphite. Here, based on a detailed band structure calculation including spin-orbit coupling, we predict an unexpected behavior of the relaxation times. We find, based on saturation ESR measurements, that T1 is markedly different from T2. Spins injected with perpendicular polarizat

Hyperspectral soft X-ray emission (SXE) and cathodoluminescence (CL) spectrometry have been used to investigate a carbonaceous-rich geological deposit to understand the crystallinity and morphology of the carbon and the associated quartz. Panchromatic CL maps show both the growth of the quartz and the evidence of recrystallization. A fitted CL map reveals the distribution of Ti4+ within the grains and shows subtle growth zoning, together with radiation halos from 238U decay. The sensitivity of the SXE spectrometer to carbon, together with the anisotropic X-ray emission from highly orientated p

In this study, we tested the use of the bipolar electrodes to enhance electrochemical degradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) in an undivided, flow-through electrochemical reactor. The bipolar electrode forms when an electrically conductive material polarizes between feeder electrodes that are connected to a direct current source and, therefore, creates an additional anode/cathode pair in the system. We hypothesize that bipolar electrodes will generate additional oxidation/reduction zones to enhance TCE degradation. The graphite cathode followed by graphite anode sequence were operated without

Fifth metatarsal stress fractures are common in sports and often result in delayed and non-union. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a rigid carbon graphite footplate (CGF) on plantar loading during take-off and landing from a jump. Nineteen recreational male athletes with no history of lower extremity injury in the past 6 months and no foot or ankle surgery in the past 3 years participated in this study. Subjects completed 7 jumping tasks while wearing a standard running shoe and then the shoe plus the CGF while plantar loading data was recorded. A series of paired t-tests

Imaging in traumatic injury to the orbits plays an important role to identify malformation of the globe, retrobulbar pathology, such as hematoma, the presence of fractures, and identification of foreign bodies. MRI can be especially useful in characterizing soft tissue abnormalities without the use of ionizing radiation. The authors report a case of penetrating injury to the orbit with a retained foreign body where the graphite core of a pencil ("pencil lead") resulted in metal-like diamagnetic susceptibility artifact. This was proven to have no metallic components by CT and surgical explorati

BACKGROUND: FeCo/graphitic-carbon nanocrystals (FeCo/GC) are biocompatible, high-relaxivity, multi-functional nanoparticles. Macrophages represent important cellular imaging targets for assessing vascular inflammation. We evaluated FeCo/GC for vascular macrophage uptake and imaging in vivo using fluorescence and MRI.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Hyperlipidemic and diabetic mice underwent carotid ligation to produce a macrophage-rich vascular lesion. In situ and ex vivo fluorescence imaging were performed at 48 hours after intravenous injection of FeCo/GC conjugated to Cy5.5 (n = 8, 8 nmol of Cy5.5/mo

Recent clinical outbreaks of infectious diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms, such as viruses, bacteria, and fungi, along with the emergence of unwanted microorganisms in industrial settings, have significantly reduced efficiency. Graphene has recently attracted significant attention as a potential antimicrobial agent because of its low toxicity, ease of production and functionalization, and high solubility in water. The presence of oxygen functional groups allows the interaction of the compound with bacteria and other biomolecules, making it an interesting candidate for antimicrobial

We present a semi-anisotropic interfacial potential (SAIP) designed to classically describe the interaction between gold and two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotropes such as graphene, fullerenes, or hydrocarbon molecules. The potential is able to accurately reproduce dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT+D3) calculations performed over selected configurations: a flat graphene sheet, a benzene molecule, and a C60 fullerene, physisorbed on the Au(111) surface. The effects of bending and hydrogen passivation on the potential terms are discussed. The presented SAIP provides a noticeabl

The synthesis of high-purity bulk hexagonal diamond (HD) remains a formidable challenge, and a more detailed understanding of the transformation pathway from hexagonal graphite (HG) to HD remains elusive. Here, we elucidate the pathway selection mechanism and identify the favorable conditions for synthesizing high-purity bulk HD. Using deep potential molecular dynamics simulations, we systematically investigate the transformation under interlayer uniaxial compression across a broad temperature and pressure range. Our results demonstrate that interlayer stress governs the transformation pathway

Nanoconfined electrolytes exhibit distinct structural and transport properties critical for emerging energy storage and nanofluidic technologies. Graphite nanochannels, with their atomically smooth surfaces and ionophilicity, serve as ideal model systems to explore ion-specific interactions under extreme confinement. To investigate the ionophilicity of graphite, we performed molecular dynamics simulations on four aqueous electrolytes-LiCl, LiTFSI, NaCl, and NaTFSI-confined within 0.89 nm graphite slit pores. For LiCl and LiTFSI, additional simulations across a wide range of concentrations up t

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a condition that interrupts neural electrical conduction, resulting in significant motor and sensory dysfunction. Current treatments remain inadequate for fully restoring neuronal activity, highlighting the urgent need for advanced neurodegenerative materials to reconnect disrupted nerve pathways and recover neural connectivity and function. Herein, conductive and adhesive hydrogel composites based on hyaluronic acid (HA) filled with exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets (EG) or pyrrolidine-functionalized EG (f-EG) are developed. Adhesive catechol-conjugated HA (HA-Cat)

This work builds upon a prior study, examining the dosimetric utility of pencil lead and thin graphitic sheets, focusing upon the measurement of skin doses within the mammographic regime. In recognizing the near soft-tissue equivalence of graphite and the earlier-observed favourable thermoluminescence yield of thin sheets of graphite, this has led to present study of 50 μm thick graphite for parameters typical of external beam fractionated radiotherapy and skin dose evaluations. The graphite layers were annealed and then stacked to form an assembly of 0.5 mm nominal thickness. Using a 6 MV pho

Nanostructures and nanoparticles of palladium assembled on highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) by the adsorption of palladium molecular precursors (MPs), in dichloromethane solutions, have been prepared. Self-assemblies of palladium nanostructures on HOPG were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques. In this work, palladium rings had a wide variety of sizes in the nanometer range, and the ring/tube structures were preserved after a reductive process in which

The physical and chemical properties of the particulate fraction of carbon-graphite/epoxy advanced composite material (cgeACM) smoke were measured to address concerns regarding potential health hazards posed by the release of fibers during pyrolysis of this material. Filter, low-pressure cascade impactor, and electrostatic precipitator samples were collected from cgeACM smoke in which the aerosol concentration ranged from 0.20 to 5.39 g/m3. Fibers were found in the smoke among individual, spherical, or nearly spherical particles and chain aggregates. The fibers had a mean count diameter of 0.5

Developing high-performance thermal greases incorporating bio-derived components is of considerable interest for reducing the interfacial thermal resistance between heat-generating components and heat sinks in electronic devices. In this study, a sustainable composite thermal grease based on bio-derived glycerol (Gly) was fabricated through a readily scalable mechanical mixing process, using spherical graphite (s-Gr) as the thermally conductive filler and tannic acid (TA), a naturally occurring polyphenol, as the interfacial modifier. The structural characteristics and microstructural morpholo
