Mechanical Vectors Enhance Fungal Entomopathogen Reduction of the Grasshopper Pest Camnula pellucida (Orthoptera: Acrididae).

Mounting scientific evidence indicates that pathogens can regulate insect populations. However, limited dispersal and sensitivity to abiotic conditions often restricts pathogen regulation of host populations. While it is well established that arthropod biological vectors increase pathogen incidence in host populations, few studies have examined whether arthropod mechanical vectors (an organism that transmits pathogens but is not essential to the life cycle of the pathogen) influence host-pathogen dynamics. The importance of mechanical dispersal by ant scavengers, Formica fusca (L.), in a grass

Physiological resistance of grasshopper mice (Onychomys spp.) to Arizona bark scorpion (Centruroides exilicauda) venom.

Predators feeding on toxic prey may evolve physiological resistance to the preys' toxins. Grasshopper mice (Onychomys spp.) are voracious predators of scorpions in North American deserts. Two species of grasshopper mice (Onychomys torridus and Onychomys arenicola) are broadly sympatric with two species of potentially lethal bark scorpion (Centruroides exilicauda and Centruroides vittatus) in the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts, respectively. Bark scorpions produce toxins that selectively bind sodium (Na(+)) and potassium (K(+)) ion channels in vertebrate nerve and muscle tissue. We previously r

Physical mapping of rDNA and satDNA in A and B chromosomes of the grasshopper Eyprepocnemis plorans from a Greek population.

Adult males and females of the grasshopper Eyprepocnemis plorans from a Greek population were analysed by C-banding, silver impregnation and double FISH for two DNA probes, i.e. ribosomal DNA (rDNA) and a 180-bp tandem repeat DNA (satDNA). This population shows characteristics of rDNA location in A chromosomes that are intermediate between those previously reported for eastern (Caucasus) and western (Spain and Morocco) populations. The four rDNA clusters revealed by FISH in chromosomes X, 9, 10 and 11 in Greek specimens imply two more than the two observed in chromosomes 9 and 11 in the Caucas

mAChRs in the grasshopper brain mediate excitation by activation of the AC/PKA and the PLC second-messenger pathways.

The species-specific sound production of acoustically communicating grasshoppers can be stimulated by pressure injection of both nicotinic and muscarinic agonists into the central body complex and a small neuropil situated posterior and dorsal to it. To determine the role of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs) in the control of acoustic communication behavior and to identify the second-messenger pathways affected by mAChR-activation, muscarinic agonists and membrane-permeable drugs known to interfere with specific mechanisms of intracellular signaling pathways were pressure injected to

Axogenesis in the embryonic brain of the grasshopper Schistocerca gregaria: an identified cell analysis of early brain development.

Axogenesis in the embryonic brain was studied at the single cell level in the grasshopper Schistocerca gregaria. A small set of individually identifiable pioneer neurons establishes a primary axon scaffold during early embryogenesis. At the beginning of scaffold formation, pioneering axons navigate along and between glial borders that surround clusters of proliferating neuroblasts. In each brain hemisphere, an axonal outgrowth cascade involving a series of pioneer neurons establishes a pathway from the optic ganglia to the brain midline. At the midline the primary preoral commissural interconn

Expression of fasciclin I and II glycoproteins on subsets of axon pathways during neuronal development in the grasshopper.

The "labeled pathways" hypothesis predicts that axon fascicles in the embryonic neuropil are differentially labeled by surface recognition molecules used for growth cone guidance. To identify candidates for such recognition molecules, we generated monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) that recognize surface antigens expressed on subsets of axon fascicles in the grasshopper embryo. The 3B11 and 8C6 MAbs immunoprecipitate 70- and 95-kd membrane glycoproteins called fasciclin I and II, respectively, which are expressed on different subsets of axon fascicles during development. These two glycoproteins are

A role for muscarinic excitation: control of specific singing behavior by activation of the adenylate cyclase pathway in the brain of grasshoppers.

Muscarinic acetylcholine receptors exert slow and prolonged synaptic effects in both vertebrate and invertebrate nervous systems. Through activation of G proteins, they typically decrease intracellular cAMP levels by inhibition of adenylate cyclase or stimulate phospholipase C and the turnover of inositol phosphates. In insects, muscarinic receptors have been credited with two main functions: inhibition of transmitter release from sensory neuron terminals and regulation of the excitability of motoneurons and interneurons. Our pharmacological studies with intact and behaving grasshoppers reveal

A broad filter between call frequency and peripheral auditory sensitivity in northern grasshopper mice (Onychomys leucogaster).

Acoustic communication is a fundamental component of mate and competitor recognition in a variety of taxa and requires animals to detect and differentiate among acoustic stimuli (Bradbury and Vehrencamp in Principles of animal communication, 2nd edn., Sinauer Associates, Sunderland, 2011). The matched filter hypothesis predicts a correspondence between peripheral auditory tuning of receivers and properties of species-specific acoustic signals, but few studies have assessed this relationship in rodents. We recorded vocalizations and measured auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) in northern grass

Pathfinding by neuronal growth cones in grasshopper embryos. II. Selective fasciculation onto specific axonal pathways.

In the previous paper (Raper, J.A., M. Bastiani, and C.S. Goodman (1983) J. Neurosci. 3:20-30) we showed that the growth cones of two sibling neurons, the G and C cells, follow the same route in the developing grasshopper neuropil until they reach a stereotypic choice point. Here their growth cones diverge from each other as G turns and extends anteriorly and C turns and extends posteriorly. In this paper we show that the G and C growth cones fasciculate and extend in opposite directions upon a specific bundle of four axons. This occurs even though many other axons are within filopodial reach

Nitric oxide/cyclic guanosine monophosphate signaling in the central complex of the grasshopper brain inhibits singing behavior.

Grasshopper sound production, in the context of mate finding, courtship, and rivalry, is controlled by the central body complex in the protocerebrum. Stimulation of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the central complex has been demonstrated to stimulate specific singing in various grasshoppers including the species Chorthippus biguttulus. Sound production elicited by stimulation of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the central complex is inhibited by co-applications of various drugs activating the nitric oxide/cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) signaling pathway. The nitric oxide-do

The effects of reduced agent-area insecticide treatments for rangeland grasshopper (Orthoptera: Acrididae) control on bird densities.

The effects of insecticidal control programs for grasshoppers on the population density of birds were assessed under operational conditions in two rangeland sites in Wyoming during an outbreak (19 to 56 grasshoppers m(-2) on >1,500 ha). Malathion, carbaryl, and fipronil were evaluated using large-scale (>/=260 ha) reduced agent-area treatments (RAAT), in which these chemicals were applied at 50% of the standard rate (except fipronil, for which there is no standard in North America) to 80, 50, and 33% of the areas (alternating treated and untreated swaths), respectively. Experimentally induced plague infection in the northern grasshopper mouse (Onychomys leucogaster) acquired by consumption of infected prey.

In this study, 20 laboratory reared Onychomys leucogaster from a parental population that is naturally exposed to plague were each fed a white mouse that had been inoculated with Yersinia pestis. Three of the 20 O. leucogaster died, four survived with antibody titers against Y. pestis and 13 survived with no titer against Y. pestis. In contrast, when 20 O. leucogaster from a plague naive parental population were fed infected prey, seven died and 13 survived with no antibody titer against Y. pestis. Our results suggest another means by which O. leucogaster from populations that are naturally ex

Guidance of neuronal growth cones in the grasshopper embryo. I. Recognition of a specific axonal pathway by the pCC neuron.

The selective affinities that growth cones display for specific axonal surfaces give rise to stereotyped patterns of selective fasciculation. Previous studies on cell recognition by neuronal growth cones in the grasshopper embryo led to the proposal and initial experimental testing of the labeled-pathways hypothesis. Here we report on a further experimental analysis of this hypothesis, using the first 3 longitudinal axon fascicles, which initially contain only the axons of 7 identified neurons. We describe and experimentally test the selective affinity of the pCC growth cone for the MP1 and dM

Study on the prediction method of grasshopper occurrence risk in Inner Mongolia based on the maximum entropy model during the growing period.

Grasshoppers represent a significant biological challenge in Inner Mongolia's grasslands, severely affecting the region's animal husbandry. Thus, dynamic monitoring of grasshopper infestation risk is crucial for sustainable livestock farming. This study employed the Maxent model, along with remote sensing data, to forecast Oedaleus decorus asiaticus occurrence during the growing season, using grasshopper suitability habitats as a base. The Maxent model's predictive accuracy was high, with an AUC of 0.966. The most influential environmental variables for grasshopper distribution were suitable h

Effect of heat processing on the nutrient composition, colour, and volatile odour compounds of the long-horned grasshopper Ruspolia differens serville.

Heat processing is commonly used to prepare edible insects for consumption. This study aimed at determining the effect of boiling and subsequent oven roasting on Ruspolia differens' nutrient composition, colour and odor compounds. Boiling leads to: a significant increase in protein and decrease in fat content on a dry matter basis; a minimal influence on its amino and fatty acids profile; a significant reduction in its ash content due to leaching of phosphorus, potassium and sodium; a significant increase in iron, zinc, copper, manganese and calcium content; and a fivefold reduction in the amo

B chromosomes in the grasshopper Eyprepocnemis plorans are present in all body parts analyzed and show extensive variation for rDNA copy number.

B chromosomes in the grasshopper Eyprepocnemis plorans are considered to be mitotically stable, because all meiotic (primary spermatocytes and oocytes) or mitotic (embryos, ovarioles, and gastric caecum) cells analyzed within the same individual show the same B chromosome number. Nothing is known, however, about body parts with somatic tissues with no mitotic activity in adult individuals, constituting the immense majority of their body. Therefore, we investigated whether B chromosomes are present in 8 non-mitotically active somatic body parts from both sexes in addition to ovarioles and teste
