Graves' Disease Presenting as Urticaria.

Graves' disease (GD) is an autoimmune disease that is characterized by the presence of antibodies targeting the thyroid gland. Commonly, the disease presents with symptoms of thyrotoxicosis such as sweating, tremors, and weight loss; less frequently, patients with GD might also have urticaria. Urticaria is clinically defined as the presence of wheals, angioedema, or both. While its pathophysiology is not completely understood, urticaria is believed to be an immune-mediated response activating mast cells, leading to the release of histamine and cytokines. Although the association between urtica

Graves' disease in Albanian children.

BACKGROUND: Graves' disease (GD) accounts for 10-15% of thyroid disorders in patients less than 18 years of age. It is the most common cause of thyrotoxicosis in children and accounts for at least 95% of cases in children. Pediatric Treatment of Graves' disease consists of anti-thyroid drugs, radioactive iodide and thyroidectomy but the optimal treatment of GD in children is still controversial. OBJECTIVE: To review treatment outcome of pediatric Graves' disease in Albania. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Descriptive review of 15 children with Graves' disease, diagnosed from Jan.2007 to Dec. 2013, at t

Endothelial dysfunction in Graves' disease.

PURPOSE: Graves' disease (GD) is an organ-specific autoimmune thyroid disease, characterized by hyperthyroidism due to excessive production of thyroid hormone induced by thyrotropin receptor-specific stimulatory autoantibodies. In this study, we determined serum levels of the soluble forms of ICAM-1, VCAM-1, vWF, IL-6, IL-12, IL-18, fibrinogen and CRP in patients with subclinical (SH) and overt hyperthyroidism (OH) caused by GD to elucidate a possible role of those parameters as markers of endothelium dysfunction (ED). MATERIAL/METHODS: The study included 96 patients: 52 with GD and 44 euthyr

Oxidative stress in graves' disease.

Increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and the consequent oxidative damage are involved in the development of several diseases, including autoimmune diseases. Graves' disease is an autoimmune disorder characterized by hyperthyroidism and, less frequently, orbitopathy. Hyperthyroidism is characterized by increased oxidative stress. Untreated hyperthyroidism is associated with an increase of several parameters of oxidative stress and in most studies (but not all) by an increase of antioxidant defense enzymes. Restoration of euthyroidism with antithyroid drug is associated with a reve

Graves' disease following subacute thyroiditis.

Subacute thyroiditis is a painful, inflammatory disease frequently accompanied with fever. It is suspected to be a viral infectious disease, while Graves' disease is an autoimmune disease. Thus, there appears to be no etiological relationship between the two diseases. A total of 25,267 thyroid disease patients made their first visits to our thyroid clinic during a period of 24 years between 1985 and 2008. Among them, subacute thyroiditis and Graves' disease accounted for 918 patients (3.6%) and 4,617 patients (18.2%), respectively. We have encountered 7 patients (one male and six female) with

[Graves disease, sign and symptoms].

Graves disease is by far the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. Is an immunologic disorder and it is distinguished clinically from other forms of hyperthyroidism by the presence of diffuse thyroid enlargement, ophthalmopathy, and occasionally pretibial myxedema. In this paper we summarize the prolific life of Robert Graves and we also describe the signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism. In today s medicine, were technology plays a very important role, we would like to remark the value of anamnesis and physical exam as some of the most useful tools.

Extensive thyroidectomy in Graves' disease.

BACKGROUND: The best surgical treatment for hyperthyroidism caused by Graves' disease remains a controversial subject. METHODS: Seven hundred fourteen consecutive patients underwent total or near-total thyroidectomy for Graves' disease in a 13-year period. In a first analysis, postoperative rates of suffocating hematoma, wound infection, recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) palsy, hypoparathyroidism, and persistence or recurrence of hyperthyroidism, were studied and compared with the same parameters in 4,426 patients who underwent bilateral thyroid gland resection for other conditions. Ophthalmopathy in childhood Graves' disease.

AIMS: To study the ocular manifestations and their severity in children with Graves' disease. METHODS: All patients with Graves' disease having regular follow up in a paediatric endocrine clinic were recruited for the study. A comprehensive ophthalmic assessment including ocular motility, exophthalmometry, intraocular pressure (IOP), slit lamp, and fundus examinations was performed. RESULTS: 83 patients (72 female, 11 male) aged 16 years or below were examined. All are Chinese. Ocular symptoms occurred in 12 patients. Ocular signs of ophthalmopathy were documented in 52 patients (62.7%). Mos

Surgical treatment of Graves' disease.

Seven men and 81 women were operated on for Graves' disease. Their median age was 33 years. Eleven patients underwent a bilateral subtotal lobectomy; 77 patients underwent a complete lobectomy with contralateral partial lobectomy. Forty-seven patients were treated before 1981. In these patients, the weight of the thyroid remnant was estimated empirically between 5 and 12 g. In the 41 patients treated since 1981, the remnant weight was estimated at 5 g by comparative weighing. There were no postoperative deaths. Functional results were established in 83 patients with an average follow-up of 50

Current treatment of Graves' disease.

In this review we have described the rationale for the appropriate treatment of patients with Graves' disease. Because the etiology of this disorder remains obscure, its management remains controversial. Since antithyroid drugs and radioiodine became readily available in the early 1950s, they have been widely used for the treatment of thyrotoxicosis, and the number of cases treated surgically has markedly decreased. However, almost four decades of experience have disclosed an unexpectedly high incidence of delayed hypothyroidism after radioiodine treatment and a low remission rate after antith

Graves' disease and thyroid cancer.

The relationship between Graves' disease or its therapy and carcinoma of the thyroid remains uncertain. We studied 20 patients found to have thyroid cancer in glands previously treated for Graves' disease between 1961 and 1986 at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Sixteen (80%) occurred in women and four (20%) occurred in men. The mean age at operation was 37 years (range, 19 to 69 years) and did not differ by sex. Fifteen of the 20 cancers (75%) were papillary while five (25%) were follicular. Six individuals (30%) had a history of external radiation to the head and neck as an infant,

Thyroid carcinoma in Graves' disease.

The prevailing hypothesis of thyroid carcinogenesis is that thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is a prime factor in the growth and possibly the genesis of thyroid carcinoma. On the other hand, Graves' disease is a hyperthyroid state caused presumably by human thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin (HTSI), not TSH. However, the literature does contain scattered reports of an association between Graves' disease and thyroid carcinoma. With this background, we retrospectively reviewed our series of 117 consecutive patients operated on for Graves' disease from 1961 through 1984. The series contains 23 m

Radiation therapy for Graves' disease.

We used radiation therapy (a total of 2,000 rads) to treat 14 patients (three men and 11 women, ranging in age from 27 to 72 years) with Graves' disease. Three of these patients had refused to take corticosteroids and the other 11 had failed to respond to them, had experienced side effects, or had other contraindications to their use. After follow-up periods ranging from six months to three years, soft-tissue inflammation was reduced in 13 of the 14 patients. All but two patients showed a decrease in proptosis of 1 to 3 mm. Myopathy showed the least improvement. Although we noted transient eye

Histocompatibility antigens in Graves' disease.

Histocompatibility antigen typing was undertaken in 100 Caucasian patients with Graves' disease (autoimmune thyrotoxicosis) and in 100 healthy Caucasian blood donors. Standard lymphocyte microcytotoxicity methods were used to tests for the presence of 22 HL-A antigens in all subjects. There was a significant difference between the groups in respect of the HL-A 8 antigen which was present in 40 patients and in 25 controls (P less than 0-0023). There was no significant difference between the patients and controls with respect to the frequency of occurrence of any of the other HL-A antigens teste

Eye signs of Graves' disease.

Graves' disease can affect the eyes and orbits in many ways, some seemingly trivial, others obviously devastating to vision. Because of the relative simplicity of diagnosing Graves' disease in the majority of cases, and now with the addition of B-scan ultrasonography, much expense and needless risk is avoidable in most patients with ophthalmopathic Graves' disease. Those patients whose diagnosis cannot be confirmed by noninvasive techniques may not have Graves' disease and deserve more in-depth study.

Psychiatric complications in Graves' disease.

BACKGROUND: Mood disorders are common in Graves' disease despite treatment. The pathogenic mechanisms involved are unknown and so is whether previous psychiatric disease influences these symptoms. METHODS: This is a longitudinal study conducted in Sweden on 65 women with newly diagnosed Graves' disease and 65 matched controls. Participants were examined during hyperthyroidism and after 15 months of treatment. Examinations included blood sampling, and psychiatric testing with the Comprehensive Psychopathological Rating Scale for Affective Syndromes and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM

Preoperative preparation for Graves' disease.

Thyroidectomy is always regarded as the crucial treatment for Graves' disease, especially in cases of poor efficacy or excessive side effects of antithyroid- drugs and 131I radioiodine therapy. To decrease the incidence of hemorrhage, thyroid storms and other severe complications during the perioperative period, surgeons explore different therapies to prepare for thyroidectomy. We performed a review of preoperative preparation with a focus on the Graves' disease population. Most of the previous schemes are effective, which contributes to the smooth operation of patients, but there is no unifie

Radioiodine therapy of Graves' disease.

Graves' disease (GD), the most common cause of hyperthyroidism, is an autoimmune disease directly caused by circulating autoantibodies that bind and activate the TSH receptor, inducing metabolic activation of the thyroid gland; this may be associated with important cardiac (atrial fibrillation) and ocular (ophthalmopathy) complications. Treating GD with real curative intent implies the full elimination of the functioning thyroid parenchyma using surgery or radioactive iodine therapy (RAI). RAI has been used in humans with hyperthyroidism since 1941, thanks to the pioneering work of a physician
