With the advancement of manned spaceflight technology, significant progress has been made in the fields of aerospace medicine and space biology to address the needs of astronauts in terms of health, safety, and mission performance. The physiological and pathological changes during microgravity exposure, including perception, response, and adaptation mechanisms, are gradually being unraveled. This study aimed to systematically summarize the common features of various molecules and structures within the cell membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus responsible for sensing microgravity. It further examin

Our position sense helps to guide us as we move about in our environment. The position sensors are believed to be the muscle spindles. We have asked the question, are spindles always involved in generating position sense? We have identified three methods of measurement of position sense, applied to the passive forearm: two-arm matching, one-arm pointing and repositioning, carried out by blindfolded subjects in the sagittal plane. In matching, one arm is brought to a position where it is perceived to be aligned with the other. In pointing, the participant points with one arm to the perceived po

Introduction: Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunts divert cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) out of cerebral ventricles in patients with hydrocephalus or elevated intracranial pressure (ICP). Despite high failure rates, there exist limited clinically viable solutions for long-term and continuous outpatient monitoring of CSF flow rate through VP shunts. We present a novel, low-power method for sensing analog CSF flow rate through a VP shunt premised on induced spatial electrical charge variation. Methods: Two geometric variants of the proposed sensing mechanism were prototyped: linear wire (P1) and cylindri

Astronauts are susceptible to a variety of conditions such as motion sickness, muscular atrophy, bone demineralization and cardiovascular deconditioning. These findings suggest that the adaptation to the absence of gravity is due, at least in part, to the effects exerted by microgravity at the cellular level. Indeed, a number of studies have indicated that gravity affects mammalian cell growth and differentiation through the modulation of gene expression. We have characterized the behaviour of endothelial cells and of the human monocytic cell line U937 cultured in the NASA-developed bioreactor

Accurate perception of the direction of gravity relies on the integration of multisensory information, particularly from the visual and vestibular systems, within the brain. Although a recent study of patients with cerebellar degeneration suggested a cerebellar role in visuo-vestibular interaction in the perception of gravitational direction, direct evidence remains limited. To address this gap, we conducted two experiments with 42 healthy participants to evaluate the impact of repetitive 1 Hz transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the posterior cerebellar vermis on visual dependency, q

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of a passive wrist movement intervention on cortical representation of forearm musculature.
METHODS: Transcranial magnetic stimulation was used to map cortical representation of a forearm flexor muscle in healthy individuals and in individuals following stroke before and immediately after a 30 min session of passive wrist movement.
RESULTS: In the healthy individuals, no changes in map area or map centre of gravity were noted after the intervention; however, map volume increased significantly across all subjects. In the stroke patient group there were no s

The purpose of this study was to examine how the modulation of tilt and translation otolith-ocular responses during constant velocity off-vertical axis rotation varies as a function of stimulus frequency. Eighteen human subjects were rotated in darkness about their longitudinal axis 30 degrees off-vertical at stimulus frequencies between 0.05 and 0.8 Hz. The modulation of torsion decreased while the modulation of horizontal slow phase velocity (SPV) increased with increasing frequency. It is inferred that the ambiguity of otolith afferent information is greatest in the frequency region where t

For more than a decade it has been assumed that there is a strong relationship between Ca2+ and gravitropism. There is evidence to suggest that the movement of Ca2+ in the wall might regulate extension growth and that free intracellular Ca2+ might mediate signalling in statocytes. However, it is unlikely that changes in either wall Ca2+ or the concentration of free intracellular calcium, [Ca2+]i, act independently of each other. This results in ambiguity in both experimentation and interpretation of experimental information. It is also uncertain that the observed redistributions of wall Ca2+ a

Vertigo, defined as an abnormal perception of motion, is debilitating for millions of people, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. It often arises from changes in the peripheral vestibular organs, which sense three-dimensional angular rotation, translational acceleration, and gravity. Researchers have predicted the characteristics of these complex misperceptions based solely on peripheral vestibular physiology and anatomy, but surprisingly, the actual misperceptions of motion and orientation in patients are different from these predictions. It has therefore been suggested th

BACKGROUND: Stroke patients may exhibit the peculiar behavior of actively pushing away from the nonhemiparetic side, leading to lateral postural imbalance and a tendency to fall toward the paralyzed side. This phenomenon has been called the "pusher syndrome."
OBJECTIVE: The current study analyzes the mechanism leading to contraversive pushing.
METHODS: The subjective postural vertical (SPV) and subjective visual vertical (SVV) were determined in five consecutively admitted patients with severe contraversive pushing and in controls. Whereas adjustment of the SPV reflects the perceived upright

BACKGROUND: Central diabetes insipidus (CDI) is a rare complication following a hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state (HHS) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The coexistence of T2DM and CDI can lead to diagnostic challenges, particularly when the patients present with persistent hypernatremia without a sense of thirst.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a young woman with T2DM and HHS who developed persistent hypernatremia without thirst. The diagnosis of CDI was delayed until she exhibited polydipsia, consuming up to 10 L of water per day, following the administration o

Staphylococcus aureus is commonly isolated from astronauts returning from spaceflight. Previous analysis of omics data from S. aureus low Earth orbit cultures indicated significantly increased expression of the Agr quorum sensing system and its downstream targets in spaceflight samples compared to ground controls. In this current study, the rotary cell culture system (RCCS) was used to investigate the effect of low-shear modeled microgravity (LSMMG) on S. aureus physiology and Agr activity. When cultured in the same growth medium and temperature as the previous spaceflight experiment, S. aureu

Orientation of the body with respect to gravity is based on integration of visual, vestibular and somatosensory signals. Here, we investigated the subjective postural vertical (SPV) and visual vertical (SVV) in three patients with bilateral somatosensory deafferentation and a group of age-matched normal subjects. Our hypothesis was that the patients with bilateral somatosensory deafferentation may show tilt induced bias in the construction of their SPV, with a normal SVV. Patient 1 had a severe Guillain Barré syndrome and almost complete absence of peripheral sensation, the two other patients

Information about head motion and gravity is conveyed to the brain by vestibular nerve afferents which are subdivided by their spontaneous firing properties into regular and irregular subtypes, thought to be differentially responsible for vestibulo-ocular versus vestibulo-spinal reflexes. In the vestibular periphery, afferents make glutamatergic synapses with type II hair cells (HCs) in all vertebrates. During the evolutionary transition to land, however, amniotes (reptiles, birds, and mammals) additionally developed type I vestibular HCs in which unique calyceal afferent terminals cover the b

Loxodes is one of the best ecologically characterized ciliate genera with numerous intriguing physiological abilities, including gravity-sensing organelles and nitrate respiration. However, these cells have been considered challenging to cultivate in bulk, and are poorly preserved by conventional fixatives used for fluorescence microscopy. Here we describe methods to grow and harvest Loxodes cells in bulk with liquid soil extract medium, as well as a new fixative called ZFAE (zinc sulfate, formaldehyde, acetic acid, ethanol) that can fix Loxodes cells more effectively than buffered formaldehyd

All cells in the body are exposed to physical force in the form of tension, compression, gravity, shear stress, or pressure. Cells convert these mechanical cues into intracellular biochemical signals; this process is an inherent property of all cells and is essential for numerous cellular functions. A cell's ability to respond to force largely depends on the array of mechanical ion channels expressed on the cell surface. Altered mechanosensing impairs conscious senses, such as touch and hearing, and unconscious senses, like blood pressure regulation and gastrointestinal (GI) activity. The GI t

The aim of this study was to investigate whether figure skaters, as individuals who experience intense vestibular stimulation, presented modification of the otolith-ocular reflex. The reflexes of 12 figure skaters were assessed using off vertical axis rotation (OVAR). Horizontal otolith-ocular reflex during OVAR is characterized by two parameters: the eye velocity horizontal modulation, assumed to compensate for perceived lateral linear translation, and the bias, assumed to compensate for the perceived rotation. We observed that skaters presented smaller amplitude of modulation and truly compe

During the 1998 Neurolab mission (STS-90), four astronauts were exposed to interaural and head vertical (dorsoventral) linear accelerations of 0.5 g and 1 g during constant velocity rotation on a centrifuge, both on Earth and during orbital space flight. Subjects were oriented either left-ear-out or right-ear-out (Gy centrifugation), or lay supine along the centrifuge arm with their head off-axis (Gz centrifugation). Pre-flight centrifugation, producing linear accelerations of 0.5 g and 1 g along the Gy (interaural) axis, induced illusions of roll-tilt of 20 degrees and 34 degrees for gravito-

Engineering a Hamiltonian system with tunable interactions provides opportunities to optimize performance for quantum sensing and explore emerging phenomena of many-body systems. An optical lattice clock based on partially delocalized Wannier-Stark states in a gravity-tilted shallow lattice supports superior quantum coherence and adjustable interactions via spin-orbit coupling, thus presenting a powerful spin model realization. The relative strength of the on-site and off-site interactions can be tuned to achieve a zero density shift at a "magic" lattice depth. This mechanism, together with a
