Persistent organic pollutants and metals in the freshwater biota of the Canadian Subarctic and Arctic: an overview.

Over 1999-2002, an extensive series of contaminant studies was conducted on freshwater biota of Canada's Arctic and Subarctic regions. The majority of inorganic contaminant studies focused on mercury and fish. While mercury concentrations were low in benthic feeding fish such as whitefish, predatory fish such as lake trout, pike, and walleye frequently had mercury levels which exceeded 0.2 mug/g, the consumption guideline for frequent consumers of fish, and 0.5 microg/g, the guideline for the commercial use of fish. Numerous consumption advisories were issued for lakes along the Mackenzie Rive

Reconstructing source polybrominated diphenyl ether congener patterns from semipermeable membrane devices in the Fraser River, British Columbia, Canada: comparison to commercial mixtures.

Semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) were placed in the Fraser River near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, between August 6 and September 30, 1996. This location is near a large urban and industrial region (population 2,000,000) and is expected to be representative of other large, modern cities. After exposure to the ambient water column, SPMD samples were analyzed for a suite of 36 polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners plus all homologue groups from mono- through hexa-brominated. Observed congener patterns differed significantly from that of the commercial penta- and octa-BDE m

Trends in Tranq: prevalence of xylazine and medetomidine in oral fluid toxicology among Great Lakes States.

Background: Xylazine and medetomidine (each sometimes referred to as "Tranq") are animal tranquilizers commonly and sometimes unknowingly used with illegal drugs, primarily fentanyl. In the United States, xylazine appeared in the Northeast beginning in the late 2010s, preceding medetomidine beginning in 2022. Current trends in the Great Lakes region west of this origin have not been thoroughly investigated. Objectives: Identify drug use trends associated with xylazine and medetomidine specific to five states comprising the Great Lakes region. Methods: From March 2023 through May 2025, 86,093 ora

Dermal exposure to environmental contaminants in the Great Lakes.

This paper reviews the literature to determine the importance of the dermal route of exposure for swimmers and bathers using Great Lakes waters and summarizes the chemical water contaminants of concern in the Great Lakes along with relevant dermal absorption data. We detail in vivo and in vitro methods of quantifying the degree of dermal absorption and discuss a preference for infinite dose data as opposed to finite dose data. The basic mechanisms of the dermal absorption process, routes of chemical entry, and the environmental and physiological factors affecting this process are also reviewed

Mercury and other heavy metals in free-ranging mink of the lower Great Lakes basin, Canada, 1998-2006.

Mercury concentrations were examined in livers of free-ranging mink (Neovison vison) trapped in the lower Great Lakes basin from 1998 to 2006. Significant geographic variation in total mercury levels was found in mink from 13 Great Lakes locations, many of which are within Great Lakes Areas of Concern (AOCs). Total mercury levels in mink from these locations were generally low to moderate, with means (±SE) ranging from 0.99 (±0.36) μg/g dry weight in mink from inland Lake Erie to 7.31 (±1.52) μg/g in mink from Walpole Island in the St. Clair River AOC. Overall, mercury exposure was highest in

Insidious Blastomycoses Osteomyelitis in a Young, Immunocompetent Male.

Blastomyces is a fungus that is endemic to the Ohio and Mississippi River Valleys and Great Lakes region. The fungus is a rare cause of infection, but most commonly causes infections of the lungs followed by the skin and bones. Infection of the bone is often not clinically suspected, which can slow the diagnosis. In this report, we present a case of Blastomyces osteomyelitis in a young, immunocompetent male.

Factors affecting enhanced mercury bioaccumulation in inland lakes of Isle Royale National Park, USA.

We investigated factors causing mercury (Hg) concentrations in northern pike to exceed the consumption advisory level (>500 ng/g) in some inland lakes of Isle Royale National Park. Using Hg-clean techniques, we collected water, zooplankton, macro invertebrates, and fishes in 1998 and 1999 from one advisory lake, Sargent Lake, for analysis of total mercury (Hg(T)) and methylmercury (MeHg). For comparison, samples were also collected from a non-advisory lake, Lake Richie. Concentrations of Hg(T) in northern pike were significantly higher in Sargent Lake (P<0.01). Counter to expectations, mean co

'A sort of destiny': the multi-jurisdictional response to sewage pollution in the Great Lakes, 1900-1930.

At the turn of the twentieth century, water pollution was the primary vector spreading waterborne disease and a public health issue. In the Great Lakes basin, unprecedentedly high mortality from typhoid fever prompted a conference of federal and provincial public health officials in 1910. Three related initiatives resulted: the provincial government amended the Public Health Act in 1912; federal legislators attempted to develop national pollution control legislation between 1912 and 1915; the International Joint Commission investigated cross boundary pollution in 1912 and recommended a convent

Temporal and spatial trends in chlorinated hydrocarbon concentrations of mink in Canadian Lakes Erie and St. Clair.

Mink (Mustela vison) carcasses were collected from local commercial trappers from fall 1998 to spring 2003 from tributaries and marshes within 4.8 km from the shores of Lakes Erie and St. Clair, including the Wheatley Harbour and St. Clair River Areas of Concern (AOCs), as well as from inland sites (8 to 40 km from shore). Liver concentrations, on a lipid weight basis, of chlorinated hydrocarbons were measured and compared among sites and to tissue concentrations of mink from two previous collections from similar sites over the past 25 years. Mink from the western Lake Erie sites, which includ

The use of thiamine and thiamine antagonists to investigate the etiology of early mortality syndrome in lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush).

Early mortality syndrome (EMS) is a non-infectious disease affecting lake trout and other salmonids in the Great Lakes and in inland lakes. It is characterised by loss of equilibrium, hyperexcitability, anorexia, and eventually death. EMS is associated with low thiamine and treatment of eggs or fry with thiamine-HCl eliminates symptoms and mortality. To verify the role of the active form of the vitamin as the prophylactic agent, we used thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) to reverse EMS symptoms. We also investigated the ability of specific thiamine antagonists that either block TPP production or int

Population biology of Camallanus oxycephalus Ward and Magath, 1916 (Nematoda: Camallanidae) in white bass in western Lake Erie.

The distribution and abundance of the nematode Camallanus oxycephalus infecting white bass, Morone chrysops, in western Lake Erie was studied for over 2 years. Infection was generally more frequent and of higher intensity in large fish. The frequency distributions of nematode abundance in all segments of the fish population followed the negative binomial distribution. The data show seasonal cycles in population structure, site selection, intensity of infection, maturation, and reproduction. Infection occurs during July and August with a resulting peak in population density; during late summer

Resurgence of cholera on the shores of Lake Tanganyika: security instability in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo as an aggravating factor and call to action.

INTRODUCTION: The Great Lakes region in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), currently affected by armed conflict, remains the ecological niche of Vibrio cholerae. Massive population displacement has increased population density in areas surrounding Lake Tanganyika, particularly in South Kivu and Tanganyika Provinces. OBJECTIVES: To describe the factors driving the persistence of cholera in this conflict-affected region and to underline the urgent need for integrated public health and humanitarian action. KEY FINDINGS: Displaced populations, often lacking shelter, sanitation, and acce

Environmental Surveillance of Vibrio cholerae O1/O139 in the Five African Great Lakes and Other Major Surface Water Sources in Uganda.

Cholera is a major public health problem in the African Great Lakes basin. Two hypotheses might explain this observation, namely the lakes are reservoirs of toxigenic Vibrio cholerae O1 and O139 bacteria, or cholera outbreaks are a result of repeated pathogen introduction from the neighboring communities/countries but the lakes facilitate the introductions. A prospective study was conducted in Uganda between February 2015 and January 2016 in which 28 selected surface water sources were tested for the presence of V. cholerae species using cholera rapid test and multiplex polymerase chain reacti

Double Take on Double Vision: Invasive Rhinosinusitis From Blastomyces dermatitidis in an Adolescent With Well-Controlled Diabetes.

Blastomyces dermatitidis is a fungus endemic to the Ohio and Mississippi river valley region and great lakes region. Exposure is typically associated with outdoor activities near streams, rivers, or moist soil. Pulmonary disease is the main manifestation, whereas dissemination is more frequently observed in immunosuppressed individuals. We herein report an uncommon case of B. dermatitidis causing invasive fungal sinusitis in a patient with well-controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus in the absence of conventional higher-risk environmental exposures. This case highlights the importance of a broad

Epidemiological Features and Effectiveness of Schistosomiasis Control Programme in Lake and Marshland Region in The People's Republic of China.

Schistosomiasis is one of neglected tropical diseases in the world. The People's Republic of China has made great achievements in schistosomiasis control through integrated interventions. Although the morbidity and mortality have been reduced to the lowest level in all three endemic regions, namely lake and marshland regions, hilly and mountainous regions and plains with waterway networks regions, the endemic status in lake and marshland region is still that of implementing the interventions in the higher endemicity areas towards elimination of schistosomiasis transmission. The Discovery of Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae Infecting Enhanced Migratory Pacific Salmon Populations in the Great Lakes.

Chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) get seasonally restocked in the Great Lakes watershed to support local ecosystems, aquaculture and recreational fishing industry. The myxozoan parasite Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae (Cnidaria, Malacosporea) causes Proliferative Kidney Disease (PKD), a severe chronic lymphoid immunopathology affecting farmed and wild salmonid populations in Central Europe and Northwestern America. We opportunistically sampled migratory Pacific salmon broodstock at fish weirs in Michigan rivers during the autumns of 2020-2023, joining seas

Acipensericola glacialis n. sp. (Digenea: Aporocotylidae) from heart of lake sturgeon Acipenser fulvescens Rafinesque (Acipenseriformes: Acipenseridae) in the Great Lakes Basin, Lake Winnebago System, USA.

Acipensericola glacialis n. sp. infects the heart of lake sturgeon, Acipenser fulvescens (Rafinesque), in the Lake Winnebago System and differs from its only congener, Acipensericola petersoni Bullard, Snyder, Jensen & Overstreet, 2008, by having a dendritic intestine, deeply-lobed testes, a post-ovarian oötype, and a common genital pore that is medial to the dextral caecum. Acipensericola petersoni has a non-dendritic intestine, testes that are not deeply lobed, an oötype that is at level of the ovary (ventral to the ovary), and a common genital pore that is dorsal to the dextral caecum. Managing outbreaks of invasive species--a new method to prioritize preemptive quarantine efforts across large geographic regions.

In pest risk assessment it is frequently necessary to make time-critical decisions regarding management of expanding pest populations. When an invasive pest outbreak is expanding rapidly, preemptive quarantine of areas that are under imminent threat of infestation is one of only a few available management tools that can be implemented quickly to help control the expansion. The preemptive quarantine of locations that surround an infested area also acts as a safeguard to counteract the risk of failed detections of the pest in field surveys. In this paper, we present a method that assesses the su

Biomonitoring programs in Michigan, Minnesota and New York to assess human exposure to Great Lakes contaminants.

Over the past century, industrialization and urban practices have resulted in the contamination of the Great Lakes ecosystem-the world's largest surface freshwater system-that provides drinking water and recreation to more than 40 million residents. In 2010, the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative was launched to accelerate efforts to protect and restore the Great Lakes and surrounding areas. Funded by GLRI, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry initiated the Biomonitoring of Great Lakes Populations (BGLP) program. The objective of the program is to assess human exposure to legac
