Athumia and philanthrôpia. Social reactions to plagues in late antiquity and early Byzantine society.

Thucydides' description of the plague at Athens stands as a paradigm that influenced eyewitness accounts throughout Greek and Byzantine history. Christian authors in Late Antiquity use his dark picture as heathen background against which they highlight Christian virtues of charity and mercy. The descriptions of the Justinianic plague of AD 542 rely on Thucydides not only stylistically but also in substance, as the early Byzantine society reacts like the people of ancient Athens rather than early Christian communities.

An investigation into the ancient abortion laws: comparing ancient Persia with ancient Greece and Rome.

Since the dawn of medicine, medical rights and ethics have always been one of mankind's concerns. In any civilisation, attention paid to medical laws and ethics depends on the progress of human values and the advancement of medical science. The history of various civilisations teaches that each had its own views on medical ethics, but most had something in common. Ancient civilisations such as Greece, Rome, or Assyria did not consider the foetus to be alive and therefore to have human rights. In contrast, ancient Persians valued the foetus as a living person equal to others. Accordingly, they

[Hippocrates. Aphorisms and Epidemics III. Two clinical texts].

The two Hippocratic texts, Aphorisms and Epidemics III, have not been translated into Danish previously. The Aphorisms are 412 short, pithy statements, mostly on the prognosis in relation to certain symptoms in the course of the diseases, very often febrile. The Aphorisms begin with the famous words: "Life is short, the Art long, opportunity fleeting, experiment treacherous, judgment difficult." (Transl. W H S Jones [22]). Epidemics III consists of 28 case histories, again mostly of febrile patients, but also of observations on the connection of the seasons with general morbidity and mortality

[The bronze head of Seuthes III. A maxillofacial surgery case from antiquity].

The authors had the opportunity to visit the tumulus of Golijama Kosmatka in todays central Bulgaria and the there found burial artefacts of Seuthes III., a Thracian King who lived in the 4th-3rd century BC. The beautiful bronze head of the king found in front of the burial site shows the typical sequelae of a dislocated lateral mid face fracture in all details. These findings do fit and also confirm the troublesome times this local king went through after the death of Alexander the Great.

The links between the medical school of Padua and the Hellenic medical world.

Between the 15th and 19th centuries the University of Padua attracted a great number of Greek students, who wanted to study medicine. They came not only from Venetian dominions (where the percentage reaches 97% of the students in Italian universities) but also from Turkish-occupied territories of Greece. It is also characteristic that several professors of the School of Medicine and Philosophy of this famous University were Greeks. They were the following ten: giovanni Cottunio, Niccolò Calliachi, Giorgio Calafatti, Tomaso Catani, Simone Stratigo, Giovanni Zografo, Pietro Zografo, Marco Carbur

Some salient features of 'Kitabul-Hashaish' with special reference to the manuscript preserved in Khuda Baksh O.P. Library, Patna.

The contributions of Dioscorides in the field of materia medica and pharmacology are unparalleled in the history of medicine. This great botanist of the 1st century A.D. made personal observations of the specific properties of drugs and presented them through illustrations for the first time. Almost all the physician authors of Unani system of medicine from Galen to Azam Khan have quoted Dioscorides. Kitabul-Hashaish was rendered into English and arabic and published repeatedly in the West. The book has great value and is quoted widely due to its authenticity. This unique work needs to be edit

A modern conceptualization of phobia in al-Balkhi's 9th century treatise: Sustenance of the Body and Soul.

Morbid fears and phobias have been mentioned in religious, philosophical and medical manuscripts since ancient times. Despite early insights by the Greeks, phobias did not appear as a separate clinical phenomenon in Western medicine until the 17th century and has evolved substantially since. However, robust investigations attempting to decipher the clinical nature of phobias emerged in pre-modern times during the oft-overlooked Islamic Golden Era (9th-12th centuries); which overlapped with Europe's medieval period. An innovative attempt was made by the 9th century Muslim scholar, Abu Zayd al-B

Reduction of temporomandibular joint dislocation: an ancient technique that has stood the test of time.

The first known recorded evidence for the reduction of a mandibular joint dislocation is documented in a papyrus dated to c. 1500 BC that originated from ancient Egypt. This same technique was later discussed by Hippocrates in Greece and the Hippocratic corpus is referred to in early Islamic writings. It is detailed in medieval European texts and eventually was incorporated into modern dental and medical practice. Today, mandibular joint dislocation is probably not that common but to be included in an important ancient Egyptian treatise, predominately concerned with trauma to the head and neck

Mythology and Neurosurgery.

Myths are the keystone of mythology. They are interpretations of events that have been told as stories and legends for thousands of years, inherited from generation to generation, and have reached the present day. Although most myths are considered figments of the imagination or fictitious legends, all of them contain references to facts from the time they occurred. Mythology, which is a collection of figments of imagination concerning nature and human beings, is a product of human effort to perceive, explain, and interpret the universe and the world, much like science. The interaction between

Six cyclopic ships with the death of one of them.

Given the knowledge of cyclopic humans and animals and their lethal nature, and given the negative way in which the cyclops is portrayed in mythology and in art, it is unusual that six naval ships--four English and two American--were named "Cyclops." However, there are also important positive attributes of the Cyclopes in Greek mythology, which explain the reasons the ships were given this name. One ship, the USS "Cyclops," with 306 men aboard, was lost at sea in the "Bermuda Triangle" in 1918 without a trace and no wreckage has ever been found.

A classical view of the theory-practice gap in nursing.

The perceived problem of the theory-practice gap is built upon the assumption that theory can and must be directly applied to nursing practice, otherwise it is irrelevant. Whilst the spirit in which this claim is made is healthy, the assumption is false. An examination of the Greek origins of theory and practice show that the ancient Greeks had different terms for the different types of knowledge contained within theory and within practice. The type of knowledge associated with practice could not be taught through theory, nor well represented in theoretical terms. The knowledge of the bicycle

The manifestation of "gangrene" in the Hippocratic corpus.

We trace the early historical references concerning "gangrene," specifically in the treatises of the Hippocratic corpus. The term "gangrene" today refers to the necrosis, or death, of tissues resulting from prolonged ischemia, bacterial invasion, and subsequent putrefaction. Apart from the name "gangrene," another term, "sphacelus," exists in the corpus, referring to similar decay. An effort is made to correlate cases of "gangrene" and "sphacelus" described in the Hippocratic texts and related bibliography. In this study we retained only references to "sphacelus" that have the same end points

[From teratology to mythology: ancient legends].

The mythology of the Greeks and Romans is full of monsters of fiction: giants, cyclops, centaurs, hydras, Gorgons… The accounts of travelers, reproduced in the Natural History of Pline l'Ancien reported the existence, in distant countries, of men with a dog's head (baboons), of men with a single tall foot (sciapode), beings whose face is embedded in the chest (or acephala blemmyes), to which must be added a wide variety of men with no mouth, no nose, or equipped with giant ears or feet turned backwards, as well as hermaphrodites. Teratology reports on monstrous births, which have constituted t
