Application technique and slurry co-fermentation effects on ammonia, nitrous oxide, and methane emissions after spreading: II. Greenhouse gas emissions.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different application techniques on greenhouse gas emission from co-fermented slurry. Ammonia (NH3), nitrous oxide (N2O), and methane (CH4) emissions were measured in two field experiments with four different application techniques on arable and grassland sites. To gather information about fermentation effects, unfermented slurry was also tested, but with trail hose application only. Co-fermented slurry was applied in April at a rate of 30 m3 ha(-1). Measurements were made every 4 h on the first day after application and were continued for

Effects of converting cropland to grassland on greenhouse gas emissions from peat and organic-rich soils in temperate and boreal climates: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: To align with climate goals, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agriculture must be reduced significantly. Cultivated peatlands are an important source of such emissions. One proposed measure is to convert arable fields on peatlands to grassland, as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) default emission factors (EF) for organic soils are lower from grasslands. Yet, these EFs are based on limited data with high variability and comparisons are difficult due to differences in climate, soil properties, and crop management. This systematic review synthesizes available ev

Biomarker response to galactic cosmic ray-induced NOx and the methane greenhouse effect in the atmosphere of an Earth-like planet orbiting an M dwarf star.

Planets orbiting in the habitable zone of M dwarf stars are subject to high levels of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs), which produce nitrogen oxides (NOx) in Earth-like atmospheres. We investigate to what extent these NO(Mx) species may modify biomarker compounds such as ozone (O3) and nitrous oxide (N2O), as well as related compounds such as water (H2O) (essential for life) and methane (CH4) (which has both abiotic and biotic sources). Our model results suggest that such signals are robust, changing in the M star world atmospheric column due to GCR NOx effects by up to 20% compared to an M star r

Species-specific effects of post-wheat green manure incorporation on spring wheat yield and soil greenhouse gas emissions in an arid irrigated system.

Post-wheat green manure incorporation can improve fallow-season resource use and crop productivity, but species-specific effects on soil greenhouse gas emissions and subsequent wheat yield remain unclear in spring wheat systems. A field experiment was conducted from 2022 to 2023 in the Yellow River Basin of Inner Mongolia, China, with five green manure species, namely common vetch, hairy vetch, sesbania, forage rapeseed, and forage oat, and a fallow control. Soil CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions, global warming potential (GWP), greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI), wheat growth, and grain yield were eva

Effects of different organic fertilization regimes on soil physicochemical properties and bacterial community assembly to promote greenhouse-cultivated Aloe vera L. growth.

Sustainable production of greenhouse-cultivated Aloe vera L. largely depends on soil quality and rhizosphere microbial stability. Organic fertilization is widely applied to improve farmland soil environment, whereas the long-term effects of different organic fertilizer regimes on soil fertility, plant growth and rhizosphere bacterial community assembly remain unclear in intensive Aloe vera L. cultivation systems. This 4.5 years greenhouse trial was conducted to systematically investigate the regulatory effects of different organic fertilization practices on soil physicochemical properties, Alo

Influence of dietary protein levels on nano-encapsulated Yucca schidigera extract and its effects on in vitro ruminal greenhouse gas production and fermentation dynamics.

The influence of nano-encapsulated Yucca schidigera extract (YSE) on total gas (GP), ruminal methane (CH4), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen sulphide (H2S) production, and fermentation activities of diets based on two different protein levels were investigated. A completely randomized experimental design with a factorial arrangement (2 × 4 × 4) with three replications was used. Factor 1 was the dietary protein levels (14%and 18%), factor 2 was the types of extracts used (TE; negative control (without extract), positive control (empty chitosan nano-capsules), Y. schidigera extract nano-capsules,

Effect of brachytic2 mutation in corn silage on performance, apparent total-tract digestibility, and greenhouse gas emissions of lactating Holsteins fed 2 concentrations of dietary neutral detergent fiber.

Corn hybrids carrying the brachytic2 (br2) mutation have reduced plant height and improved plant standability. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of feeding corn silage (CS) from br2 corn with CS from conventional tall corn on feed intake, productivity, total-tract nutrient digestibility, and greenhouse gas emissions of Holstein cows fed diets with high or low dietary NDF. Twenty primiparous and 20 multiparous Holstein cows (76 ± 31 DIM, 46 ± 9.0 kg milk/d, 658 ± 83 kg BW) were enrolled in a randomized complete block design with a 14-d pretreatment period in which all cows

Modelling the effects of changes in reproductive performance of dairy cattle on pasture-based farms from Waikato, New Zealand on greenhouse gas emissions, production, and financial performance.

AIMS: To use a commercially available, deterministic, whole-farm model to assess the impact on production (milk solids (MS)/ha), greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (total and per kg MS), and gross margin per ha, from changes in the calving pattern alone or combined with changes in non-pregnancy and replacement rate, for a pasture-based dairy farming system in Waikato, New Zealand. METHODS: A baseline model of a dairy farm was developed. Reproductive data from actual Waikato dairy farms were used to assess the change and variability in GHG production (total and per kg MS), MS/ha and gross margin/h

Effects of extending dairy cow longevity by adjusted reproduction management decisions on partial net return and greenhouse gas emissions: A dynamic stochastic herd simulation study.

Prolonging dairy cattle longevity is regarded as one of the options to contribute to more sustainable milk production. Because failure to conceive is one of the main reasons for culling, this study investigates how adjustments in reproduction management affect partial net return at herd level and greenhouse gas emissions per unit of milk, using a dynamic stochastic simulation model. The effects of reproduction decisions that extend cattle longevity on milk yield, calving interval and pregnancy rate were derived from actual performance of Dutch commercial dairy cows over multiple lactations. Mitigating Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Health Care: A Closer Look at Products and Supplies.

Climate change leads to extreme weather, heat emergencies, flooding, and other events. These cause disease, injury, and harm to individuals and communities. Hospitals contribute significantly to planet-warming greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Nurses can reduce these emissions and mitigate harm through reuse, replacement, reprocessing, eliminating redundancies, and reducing the overall amount and quantity of products used. This article provides background information about chemicals of concern, choosing between reusable and single-use products, and offers suggestions for actions nurses can take

Bridging the gap in riverine greenhouse gas research: From monitoring methods to mechanistic understanding.

Despite their increasing recognition in global greenhouse gas (GHG) budgets, riverine emission estimates face challenges from data gaps and methodological inconsistencies. To evaluate these challenges, this study reviewed 568 publications on riverine emissions published from 2011 to 2024. We analyzed monitoring methods, influencing variables, data characteristics, and emission pathways, using PRISMA protocol. River research represents only 8 % of all aquatic GHG studies, with a strong geographical bias toward large rivers, especially in Asia (52 %). Small rivers remain underrepresented despite

Seasonal effects on ruminal fermentation and greenhouse gas emission patterns in non-lactating crossbred Saanen goats under tropical conditions: Evidence from respiratory chamber measurements.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: High ambient temperature (HTa) associated with climate change poses challenges to livestock production and exacerbates greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in a self-perpetuating cycle. While HTa influences ruminal fermentation and enteric methane (CH₄) emissions in dairy cows, data on long-term seasonal HTa effects in heat-adapted tropical dairy goats under natural conditions remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate seasonal HTa effects on ruminal fermentation patterns, physiological responses, and daily CO₂ and CH₄ emissions in non-lactating crossbred Saanen goats using res

Accounting for the Greenhouse Gas Emission Intensity of Regional Electricity Transfers.

Accurately quantifying greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is essential for climate policy implementation but challenging in the case of electricity transfers across regulatory jurisdictions. Regulating emissions associated with delivered electricity is further complicated by contractual arrangements for dynamic electricity transfers that confound emission accounting approaches rooted in the physics of grid operations. Here, we propose a novel consumption-based accounting methodology to reconcile the nominal and the physical flows of electricity from generators to consumers. We also compare capacit

Embodied Transboundary Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Mitigation Opportunities of over 700 Belt and Road Initiative Projects.

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the world's largest ongoing infrastructure endeavor, tackles urgent development needs in underserved regions. However, its construction phase, especially material extraction and processing, may have far-reaching climate implications that remain poorly known. Here, we present the first global, project-level assessment of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions embodied in the construction of over 700 individual BRI projects (2008-2024) across 105 countries. By integrating a detailed project data set with a physically grounded global supply chain model that captures ma

Recent Increase of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Cryosphere-Influenced Reservoirs under Climate Change.

Global warming leads to cryosphere degradation, transferring large amounts of terrestrial carbon and nitrogen to reservoirs, which may accelerate the release of greenhouse gases (GHGs) to the atmosphere. However, the spatial dynamics and decadal trends of GHG emissions from these reservoirs remain elusive. Here we compile a comprehensive data set of CO2 (1108 measurements), CH4 (661) and N2O (313) concentrations to estimate that cryosphere-influenced reservoirs emit 56.7 ± 9.3 Tg CO2 eq yr-1 of GHGs. Cryosphere-influenced reservoirs account for less than 10% of the global reservoir area, yet t

A study on factors influencing the national carbon emission trading price in China.

On 16 July 2021, China officially launched its national carbon emissions trading market, which has since become the largest market in the world in terms of coverage of greenhouse gas emissions and plays an important role in combating global climate change. This study selects the national carbon emissions trading price data from July 16, 2021 to August 31, 2024, which records the price fluctuation characteristics in the early stage of the market (covering only the stage of the electric power industry), which not only provides a historical reference for the subsequent inclusion of the industry,
