Fatal familial cholestatic syndrome in Greenland Eskimo children.

A syndrome of intrahepatic cholestasis leading to death in early childhood was studied in 16 Greenland Eskimo children. The pedigrees are compatible with autosomal recessive inheritance. Jaundice, bleeding, pruritus, malnutrition, steatorrhoea, osteodystrophy and dwarfism were typical clinical features. Eight had died between the ages of six weeks and three years due to bleeding or infections. Hyperbilirubinaemia, profound hypoprothrombinaemia, thrombocytosis and elevated alkaline phosphatase levels were evident. Serum calcium, phosphate and parathyroid hormone levels indicated a secondary hyp

Muscular strength, mobility in daily life and mental wellbeing among older adult Inuit in Greenland. The Greenland population health survey 2018.

The purpose was to analyse the association of muscular strength, muscle pain and reduced mobility in daily life with mental wellbeing among older Inuit men and women in Greenland. Data (N = 846) was collected as part of a countrywide cross-sectional health survey in 2018. Hand grip strength and 30-seconds chair stand test were measured according to established protocols. Mobility in daily life was assessed by five questions about the ability to perform specific activities of daily living. Mental wellbeing was assessed by questions about self-rated health, life satisfaction and Goldberg's Gener

Trichinella infection in a hunting community in East Greenland.

Trichinella nativa infection (trichinellosis) is highly prevalent in Arctic wildlife, but the human burden of trichinellosis in present-day Greenland is unknown. The study aimed to determine Trichinella seroprevalence in an eastern Greenlandic hunting community and to evaluate risk factors for seropositivity. Overall, 998 inhabitants aged 10 years in the Ammassalik municipality were tested for Trichinella-specific IgG antibodies. Background information was obtained from questionnaires. Seropositivity was 1.4% in persons aged <40 years and increased to >12% in those aged 60 years. Older age, oc

An assessment of selenium to mercury in Greenland marine animals.

Information on mercury and selenium molar relation in muscle, liver and kidney tissue of Greenland marine animals is presented. In the majority of the samples selenium was present in a molar surplus to mercury. This was most clear in molluscs, crustaceans, fish and seabirds. A 1:1 molar ratio was found in tissues of marine mammals with high mercury concentrations (above approx. 10 nmol/g). This was most clearly demonstrated for liver and kidney tissue of polar bear and for ringed seal with high mercury concentration in the liver. These findings support previous results found in liver tissue of

Chronic otitis media and sequelae in the population of Greenland.

It is generally recognized that chronic otitis media and sequelae of this disease are frequently encountered among the native population of Greenland, but the prevalence of chronic otitis in Greenland has not previously been systematically traced. Treatment for this disease has improved and we expect an increased demand for treatment of this disease among Greenland natives. To evaluate the need of treatment the prevalence of chronic otitis media in two large Greenland towns was assessed. The study population included 303 persons aged 11-20 years and 305 aged 41-50 years. Medical histories were

Incidence and aetiological pattern of jaw fractures in Greenland.

All of the cases involving fractures of the mandible and/or maxilla in Greenland were recorded in a 1 1/2 year period beginning 1 July 1981. Further information of aetiological patterns was added from 2 studies of mandibular fractures in Godthåb/Greenland. The incidence of jaw fractures in Greenland (17 to 10,000 per year) was the highest ever reported. In 90% of these cases, the cause of fractures were interpersonal violence. Jaw fractures were encountered in nearly all districts of Greenland, most often in urban areas and the patients were chiefly of Greenlandic descent. The % of patients in

The influence of Scandinavian presence on Greenlandic lactase persistence.

BACKGROUND: The study aims to estimate the prevalence of lactase non-persistence (LNP) among Greenlandic Inuit and Scandinavians living in Nuuk and East Greenland. The C to T transition in LCT - 13910 (rs4988235) is an autosomal inherited variant that provides the ability to lifelong lactase production, necessary to digest milk. The transition is very common in North European populations. However, LNP has only been sparsely studied in Greenland and never in Eastern Greenland, and genotype data has not previously been reported. METHODS: Whole blood samples were collected from 535 participants,

Coverage rates of the children vaccination programme in Greenland.

In order to estimate the current coverage rate among all children in Greenland, we conducted an observational cross-sectional study identifying all children in Greenland eligible for a vaccination between 1 March 2018 and 16 June 2019. we found an overall national coverage of 85.4%. The national coverage for the vaccinations given at birth was 97.1%, dropping to 94.3%, 87.7% and 83.6% at ages 3, 5 and 12 months. Among children eligible for the Measles, Mumps and Rubella-vaccinations, the national coverage was 76.9% for children aged 15 months and 64.1% for children aged 4 years, but dropping t

Human exposure to contaminants in the traditional Greenland diet.

The traditional diet is a significant source of contaminants to people in Greenland, although contaminant levels vary widely among species and tissue from very low in many to very high in a few. Our study has included cadmium, mercury, selenium, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), dichlorophenyltrichloroethane (DDT), chlordane, hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCH), chlorobenzenes, dieldrin and toxaphene in the major species and tissues consumed by Greenlanders. In general, the levels of these are very low in terrestrial species and in muscle of many marine species. High organochlorines concentrations are

First case of community acquired giardiasis in Nuuk, Greenland.

We report a case of community acquired giardiasis, in Nuuk, Greenland. Likely source of infection being consumption of untreated water from a local reservoir, alternatively through contact with sewage. Giardia is widespread worldwide but has not commonly been considered a cause of gastrointestinal distress in patients in Greenland, without relevant travel history. This may be due to under diagnosis, or historically low prevalence of Giardia in the region. Climate change with increasing temperatures, growing tourism and pet travel may influence the presence of Giardia in the region. This case h

A Comparative Study on the Faecal Bacterial Community and Potential Zoonotic Bacteria of Muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) in Northeast Greenland, Northwest Greenland and Norway.

Muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) are ruminants adapted to a high-fibre diet. There is increasing interest in the role that gut microbes play in the digestion and utilization of these specialized diets but only limited data available on the gut microbiome of high-Arctic animals. In this study, we metabarcoded the 16S rRNA region of faecal samples from muskoxen of Northeast Greenland, Northwest Greenland and Norway, and quantified the effects of physiological and temporal factors on bacterial composition. We found significant effects of body mass, year of sampling and location on the gut bacterial co

Reversible Atlantic overturning despite continued Greenland ice sheet melt.

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is considered vulnerable to irreversible weakening or collapse under global warming and related Greenland ice sheet (GrIS) melt, yet its resilience to either forcing remains poorly constrained. Here, we use a carbon dioxide emission-driven Earth system model with an interactive GrIS to assess AMOC reversibility under a range of idealized carbon dioxide emission pathways that produce near-linear global warming up to 10 kelvins (K), stabilization across 1.5 to 9 K, and subsequent cooling. We find that although the AMOC reaches threshold-defi

First Characterization of Avian Influenza Viruses from Greenland 2014.

In late February 2014, unusually high numbers of wild thick-billed murres (Uria lomvia) were found dead on the coast of South Greenland. To investigate the cause of death, 45 birds were submitted for laboratory examination in Denmark. Avian influenza viruses (AIVs) with subtypes H11N2 and low pathogenic H5N1 were detected in some of the birds. Characterization of the viruses by full genome sequencing revealed that all the gene segments belonged to the North American lineage of AIVs. The seemingly sparse and mixed subtype occurrence of low pathogenic AIVs in these birds, in addition to the emac
