BACKGROUND: Sexual grooming is present in almost all cases of child sexual abuse (CSA). However, limited research has examined whether sexual grooming varies according to the perpetrator's relationship to the child.
OBJECTIVE: To examine differences in sexual grooming behaviors and abuse characteristics across four perpetrator relationship types: family members, friends/romantic partners, acquaintances, and community members.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Participants were 918 adult survivors of CSA recruited from the United States through an online research platform.
METHODS: Participants comp

Grooming behaviour is the most common innate behaviour in animals. In rodents, it consists of sequences of movements organized in four phases, executed symmetrically on both sides of the animal and creating a syntactic chain of behavioural events. The grooming syntax can be altered by stress and novelty, as well as by several mutations and brain lesions. Grooming behaviour is known to be affected by alterations of the dopamine system, including dopamine receptor modulation, dopamine alteration in genetically modified animals, and after brain lesion. While a lot is known about the initiation an

Rats emit grooming actions in sequences that follow characteristic patterns of serial order. One of these patterns, a syntactic chain, has a particularly stereotyped order that recurs spontaneously during grooming thousands of times more often than could occur by chance. Previous studies have shown that performance of this sequence is impaired by excitotoxin lesions of the corpus striatum. In this study we examined whether the striatum is unique in its importance to this behavioral sequence or whether control of the sequence instead depends equally upon the cortex and cerebellum. In two experi

Pilonidal sinus is a recognized occupational condition sometimes seen in barbers and pet groomers, and it involves most commonly interdigital spaces. We present a previously unreported case of chronic paronychia with 2 separate digital pilonidal sinuses resulting from multiple embedded hair fragments in the eponychium of a dog groomer, who had been repeatedly treated with antibiotics with no success and ended up having surgical treatment. The objective of this study is to remind readers of this rare but possible occupational disease, particularly among employees working with hair, and to empha

Human social interaction is built on progressivity (the forward flow of interaction), which communicative breakdowns may disrupt. Communicative repair (resolving communicative troubles) and negotiation (a collaborative sequence to resolve communicative breakdowns) may both serve as processes to restore progressivity following breakdowns. Here, we investigated gestural redoings(reproduction of a previous signal in any form), negotiation, and progressivity in grooming interactions (N = 311) among male East African chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) in the wild. These chimpanzees produc

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), a disabling and notoriously treatment-resistant neuropsychiatric disorder, affects 2-3% of the general population and is characterized by recurring, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive, ritualistic behaviors (compulsions). Although long associated with dysfunction within the cortico-striato-thalamic-cortical circuits, the thalamic role in OCD pathogenesis remains highly understudied in the literature. Here, we identified a rat thalamic nucleus - the reuniens (NRe) - that mediates persistent, compulsive self-grooming behavior. Optogenetic activati

INTRODUCTION: Despite their association with brain disorders, the neurophysiological roles of the trace amine-associated receptors remain poorly understood. In humans, the genomic trace amine-associated receptor cluster comprises nine consecutive genes, six of which code for functional proteins (TAAR1, TAAR2, TAAR5, TAAR6, TAAR8, TAAR9). While homologues of the former three are known to regulate classical monoamines and neurogenesis, the functions of the latter three remain largely unknown. In this exploratory study, we demonstrate for the first time that TAAR9 plays a significant regulatory r

BACKGROUND: Sexual abuse (SA) of minors is an ongoing global problem. Analyzing possible grooming strategies might help in the prevention of SA. Though SA of minors in religious institutions has been a major research topic, within Germany and worldwide, research regarding Protestant settings is scarce.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze grooming strategies in German Protestant settings.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 30 persons who reported having experienced SA in a German Protestant setting.
METHODS: Qualitative content analysis was c

Little is known about the extent to which youths who commit harmful sexual behaviors (HSBs) against another minor utilize sexual grooming during the offense process. This study examined sexual grooming behaviors reported by adults (n = 250) who experienced HSBs by another minor during their childhood. Participants completed a self-report survey which included the Sexual Grooming Scale - Victim Version (SGS-V). The results showed that most participants (n = 242; 96.9%) reported at least one sexual grooming behavior, with an average of 11.3 behaviors reported. These findings will be discussed as

Psilocybin is a serotonergic psychedelic compound which shows promise for treating compulsive behaviours. This is particularly pertinent as compulsive disorders require research into new pharmacological treatment options as the current frontline treatments such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, require chronic administration, have significant side effects, and leave almost half of the clinical population refractory to treatment. In this study, we investigated psilocybin administration in male and female SAPAP3 knockout (KO) mice, a well-validated mouse model of obsessive compulsive a

Pubic hair grooming is practiced by women and men who consider themselves to have hypertrichosis of their genitals. Of the several modalities that can be used to remove the excess hair-the nonelectric razor is the most common. In addition to laceration, several other adverse cutaneous events have been observed in individuals who groom their own pubic hair.

Mathematical modeling of behavioral sequences yields insight into the rules and mechanisms underlying sequence generation. Grooming in Drosophila melanogaster is characterized by repeated execution of distinct, stereotyped actions in variable order. Experiments demonstrate that, following stimulation by an irritant, grooming progresses gradually from an early phase dominated by anterior cleaning to a later phase with increased walking and posterior cleaning. We also observe that, at an intermediate temporal scale, there is a strong relationship between the amount of time spent performing body-

Pubic hair grooming is a growing phenomenon and is associated with body image and sexual activity. A nationally representative survey of noninstitutionalized adults aged 18 to 65 years residing in the United States was conducted. Differences in demographic and sexual characteristics between groomers and nongroomers were explored. Four thousand one hundred and ninety-eight men completed the survey. Of these men, 2,120 (50.5%) reported regular pubic hair grooming. The prevalence of grooming decreases with age, odds ratio = 0.95 (95% confidence interval [0.94, 0.96]), p < .001. Adjusting for sexu

Zfp462 is a newly identified vertebrate-specific zinc finger protein that contains nearly 2500 amino acids and 23 putative C2H2-type zinc finger domains. So far, the functions of Zfp462 remain unclear. In our study, we showed that Zfp462 is expressed predominantly in the developing brain, especially in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus regions from embryonic day 7.5 to early postnatal stage. By using a piggyBac transposon-generated Zfp462 knockout (KO) mouse model, we found that Zfp462 KO mice exhibited prenatal lethality with normal neural tube patterning, whereas heterozygous (Het) Zfp462

The basic science literature is replete with descriptions of naturally occurring or experimentally induced pathological grooming behaviors in animals, which are widely considered animal models of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). These animal models rely largely on observed similarities between animal behaviors and human OCD behaviors, and on studies of animal pathological grooming disorders that respond to serotonin enhancing drugs. However, current limitations in assessment of complex cognition and affect in animals precludes the field's ability to match the driving primary processes behi

The present study provides the first quantitative developmental analysis of movement in the weaver (wv/wv) mutant mouse. This autosomal recessive mutation affects both striatal and cerebellar circuitries that are related to motor performance. We report data on post-swim grooming behavior in 14 mutant and 14 control animals on alternate postnatal Days 13-20. Mutant animals showed a greater number, but shorter duration, of grooming bouts across this developmental period. The mutant animals also used external support during grooming, expressed various forms of ataxia, performed a higher proportio

In online spaces, children are vulnerable to exploitation and sexual predators. Groomers contact minors in online chat rooms with the intent of sexual abuse. This study investigates how new deep learning models compare to traditional machine learning models in detecting grooming conversations and predatory authors. Furthermore, we detect the underlying tones used by predators and explore how these affect detection capabilities. Our goal is to better understand predator tactics and to advance automatic grooming detection in order to protect children in online spaces. The PAN12 chat logs, which

Internet predation of minors has become a focus of child sexual abuse research and legislation. Studies reveal that many American youth report experiencing sexual solicitation and sexual grooming online, but the youth perspective of these experiences has not been examined. This study examined retrospective perspectives of online sexual solicitation and grooming experienced as a minor. Participants were 1,133 undergraduate college students at two public institutions in the United States who completed an online survey retrospectively exploring Internet behaviors, experiences of online sexual sol

Grooming is a complex and robust innate behavior, commonly performed by most vertebrate species. In mice, grooming consists of a series of stereotyped patterned strokes, performed along the rostro-caudal axis of the body. The frequency and duration of each grooming episode is sensitive to changes in stress levels, social interactions and pharmacological manipulations, and is therefore used in behavioral studies to gain insights into the function of brain regions that control movement execution and anxiety. Traditional approaches to analyze grooming rely on manually scoring the time of onset an

BACKGROUND: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a global problem that is preventable. Sexual grooming behaviors have been deemed an integral part of CSA for the purpose of avoiding detection and preventing disclosure. Many of these behaviors are reported more often by adults who experienced CSA as compared to those that did not (Jeglic et al., 2023). Such behaviors form important targets for prevention efforts, as well as the investigation and prosecution of CSA. Consequently, it is important to identify the prevalence rates of sexual grooming behaviors.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study wa
