Lack of access to oral care is a severe problem in the United States with over one-third of the population lacking dental insurance. In this group, 32 million people lack dental insurance and access to public dental services (Medicaid or Medicare), and 7 million of them need dental care. In some high-risk populations, such as Native Americans, two-thirds have unmet dental needs. Only 1 percent of Medicaid-eligible babies have a dental examination before twelve months of age. In this paper the social covenant of the dental profession is examined and suggestions made for improving access to care

BACKGROUND: Professionalism was recognized as a fundamental competency of medical/dental practice at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Organizations and experts published several definitions of professionalism, but research on patients' perception of professionalism has been limited. To address this gap in literature, this study explored dental patients' perception of dental professionalism, and then compared their perception with that of dental professionals.
METHODS: Of the 800 questionnaires that were distributed to dental patients in public and private clinics and hospitals, 504

UNLABELLED: Careful history-taking improves diagnosis of non-dental orofacial pain, a not uncommon group of conditions. Accurate diagnosis of conditions such as chronic idiopathic facial pain, temporomandibular disorders, burning mouth syndrome and trigeminal neuralgia is essential if inappropriate dental treatment is to be avoided. There are few investigations to help in the diagnostic process and many of these patients have other forms of chronic pain. All the conditions are best treated using a holistic approach. Drugs, such as tricyclic antidepressants and anticonvulsants, are often effect

BACKGROUND: Anatomy education is fundamental to competent and reliable dental practice, yet effective strategies to enhance learning and long-term retention remain debated. Regular formative assessment may support learning through several mechanisms, including retrieval practice, repeated exposure to course content, and more distributed studying, but its impact in oral macroscopic anatomy education remains insufficiently explored.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic highlights the need for practitioners to enhance workflows to increase safety and mitigate risk. As dental practice creates a highly aerosolized environment, pre-visit testing for SARS-CoV-2 has the potential to be an effective mitigation strategy to minimize disease transmission in dental offices. The Pragmatic Return to Effective Dental Infection Control through Testing (PREDICT) Feasibility Study examined the potential, logistics, and impact related to laboratory-based PCR viral testing and point-of-care (POC) antigen testing.

INTRODUCTION: Access to dental care is a problem in California as in many parts of the United States. Many women, including half of those having dental problems, do not see a dentist during pregnancy. The objective of this study was to describe the oral health status and oral health practices of low-income pregnant women in San Diego, California, and to determine the needs for oral health care education in this population.
METHODS: This descriptive, retrospective, correlational study examined oral health and oral health care practices by age, ethnicity, and gravidity by using medical records

Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus are at increased risk for oral-dental complications, yet there is limited evidence from Iran on whether theory-based educational interventions can produce sustained improvements in oral-dental self-care behaviors in this population. This non-blinded experimental study was conducted in 2023-2024 among patients with type 2 diabetes registered at the Fasa Diabetes Center. A total of 220 participants were randomly allocated to an intervention group (n = 110) or a control group (n = 110). Sample size was calculated using the formula for comparing two independe

In a study conducted by the Dental Division of the Ministry of Health in 1992, 3157 Singapore adults aged 20 to 65 years and over were interviewed on their knowledge, attitude and practice of dental care and given an examination. About 66% indicated they required dental treatment. Utilisation of dental services was low with 39% visiting the dentist at least once in 2 years. About 72% brushed their teeth morning and night. The dental examination showed that 79.2% had calculus, 92% needed prophylaxis and oral hygiene instruction and only 0.2% needed complex periodontal treatment. A large proport

Psychosomatic factors such as mental well-being, sleep quality, and satisfaction with social life play a key role in both general and oral health, but their association with the use of dental services has not yet been sufficiently investigated. The aim of this study was to examine the psychosomatic well-being of dental patients. For this purpose, the Psychosomatic Assessment Health Disc (PAHD) was applied, and two patient groups were compared: a group of individuals who attended scheduled dental appointments and a group of emergency dental care users. A total of 232 study participants aged 25

In January 2021, the guideline 'Periodontal screening, diagnosis, and treatment in general practice' was introduced as a successor to the so-called paro protocol. Simultaneously, the Dutch Periodontal Screening Index was replaced by the Periodic Periodontal Screening. The experiences of general dental practitioners and dental hygienists with the new guideline were evaluated in the autumn of 2022. Random groups of 1,000 general dental practitioners and 400 dental hygienists were invited to answer an online questionnaire on this topic: 125 (12.5%) general dental practitioners and 102 (25.5%) den

Tuberculosis has re-emerged as a serious public health concern. Multidrug-resistant strains and an increase in the number of high-risk groups are posing a difficult problem for health care providers. The risk of TB transmission in hospital dental practices is potentially increasing. A 20-question survey was mailed to the membership of the American Association of Hospital Dentists, addressing various issues relating to tuberculosis. One hundred thirty-two surveys were analyzed. Twelve per cent of respondents reported at least one TB skin test conversion by a dental provider within the past year
