Patient Perspectives on the Process and Outcome of Group Emotional Awareness and Expression Therapy for Chronic Pain.

Emotional Awareness and Expression Therapy (EAET) targets traumatic or conflictual emotional and interpersonal contributors to chronic pain. This qualitative study examined patients' experiences of 4-session, group EAET conducted in an Australian tertiary pain clinic. Interviews with 10 adults who completed the therapy were analyzed via thematic analysis. Seven themes were identified. Patients noted that EAET was emotionally "challenging but worth it," and that the group "provided strength in numbers, usually." Although only some patients reported pain reduction, most reported that EAET was be

Group B Streptococcal Hemolytic Pigment Impairs Platelet Function in a Two-Step Process.

Group B streptococci (GBS) cause a range of invasive maternal-fetal diseases during pregnancy and post-partum. However, invasive infections in non-pregnant adults are constantly increasing. These include sepsis and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, which are often complicated by systemic coagulation and thrombocytopenia. GBS express a hyper-hemolytic ornithine rhamnolipid pigment toxin with cytolytic and coagulatory activity. Here, we investigated the effects of GBS pigment on human platelets. Infections of platelets with pigmented GBS resulted initially in platelet activation, followed by n

Facilitation of biological motion processing by group-based autism specific social skills training.

Abnormalities in neurophysiological correlates of social perception are a well-known feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, little is known if and how ASD specific behavioral interventions may affect neural processing in ASD. The aim of the current study was to investigate for the first time, whether the group-based social skills training SOSTA-FRA would elicit changes in neurophysiological correlates of social perception in high-functioning ASD individuals aged 8-17 years. Event-related potentials (ERPs) of a facial emotion recognition (FER) and a biological motion perception tas

Hazard and control of group II (non-proteolytic) Clostridium botulinum in modern food processing.

Group II (non-proteolytic) Clostridium botulinum poses a safety hazard in modern food processing, which consists of mild pasteurization treatments, anaerobic packaging, extended shelf lives and chilled storage. The high risk is reflected in the relatively large number of botulism cases due to group II C. botulinum in commercially produced foods during the past decades. Because of the high prevalence of group II C. botulinum in the environment, food raw materials may carry spores. Although group II spores are less heat-resistant than group I (proteolytic) spores, they can tolerate the heat trea

Process and treatment adherence factors in group cognitive-behavioral therapy for partner violent men.

This study used multilevel modeling to examine process and treatment adherence factors as predictors of collateral partner reports of abuse following participation in a cognitive-behavioral grouptreatment program for partner violent men (N = 107). Therapist working alliance ratings predicted lower levels of physical and psychological abuse at the 6-month follow-up and were the strongest predictors of outcome. Homework compliance partially mediated associations between early alliance ratings and psychological abuse at follow-up. Greater group cohesion during treatment, assessed byclient report,

A complex study of 1273 healthy children of creches and kindergartens where no viral hepatitis occurred for a long time revealed 39 children (3.1%) with an increased activity of glutamine-pyroracemic transaminase in the blood serum. Viral hepatitis was diagnosed in 12 (0.94%) of them as a result of clinical examination (an icteric form in 1, and a nonicteric form in 11 cases). The presence of asymptomatic form of infection could be supposed in 17 other children (1.3%). Opioid-use disorder and reported pain after spine surgery: Risk-group patterns in cognitive-appraisal processes in a longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: As spinal disorders cause significant pain over an extended period, prolonged opioid use could lead to an increased risk of opioid-use disorder (OUD) over recovery. This study examined cognitive-appraisal processes as potential moderators of OUD-risk, after adjusting for demographic and clinical factors. METHODS: This longitudinal cohort study included 342 adults undergoing surgical treatment for a back/leg problem, neck/arm/shoulder problem, or spinal deformity at a United States academic medical center. The Numeric Rating Scale assessed pain, and the Quality of Life Appraisal Pr

Transcriptomic Changes Related to Cellular Processes with Particular Emphasis on Cell Activation in Lysosomal Storage Diseases from the Group of Mucopolysaccharidoses.

Although mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS), inherited metabolic diseases from the group of lysosomal storage diseases (LSD), are monogenic disorders, recent studies indicated that their molecular mechanisms are complicated. Storage of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), arising from a deficiency in one of the enzymes involved in the degradation of these compounds, is the primary cause of each MPS type. However, dysfunctions of various cellular organelles and disturbance of cellular processes have been reported which contribute considerably to pathomechanisms of the disease. Here, we present a complex transcr

An Idionomic Network Analysis of Trichotillomania Treatment Processes: Gathering Group-Level and Individual-Level Insights to Inform a Personalized Therapeutic Framework.

Trichotillomania, characterized by repetitive hair-pulling, leads to significant distress and impairment. Heterogeneity in symptom profiles challenges the effectiveness of treatment protocols for trichotillomania. Recent research endorses personalized treatment, emphasizing the assessment of biopsychosocial processes to tailor interventions more closely to the individual. This shift to a process-based, person-centered framework necessitates analytic methods capable of probing beyond nomothetic patterns to unveil nuanced individual-level processes. This study utilized Group Iterative Multiple M

How to optimize the CAR-T Cell therapy process? A group concept mapping analysis of preconditions for a frictionless process from a German multistakeholder perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment with chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cells involves a large number of interdisciplinary stakeholders and is associated with complex processes ranging from patient-specific production to follow-up care. Due to the complexity, maximum process optimization is required in order to avoid efficiency losses. This study aimed at systematically determining the preconditions for a frictionless flow of the CAR-T process by surveying the stakeholders involved. METHODS: A Group Concept Mapping (GCM) analysis, a mixed-methods participatory research, was conducted. CAR-T experts

[Determination of antibodies to Streptococcus group A polysaccharide by an immunodiffusion method in human sera in various pathological processes of streptococcal etiology].

A method for the assay of antibodies to the specific antigenic determinant of group A streptococcal polysaccharide (A-polysaccharide) in human sera was developed. The sera were tested in the precipitation test in agar gel with different doses of A-polysaccharide. The presence of a high level of the above-mentioned antibodies is indicative of infection caused by group A streptococcus, but not streptococci of other groups or by the L-forms of streptococci. In 87.5% of patients with primary rheumatism a high level of antibodies to the specific antigenic determinant of A-polysaccharide was detecte

How the visual brain can learn to parse images using a multiscale, incremental grouping process.

Natural scenes usually contain many objects that need to be segregated from each other and the background. Object-based attention is the process that groups image fragments belonging to the same objects. Curve-tracing tasks provide a special case, testing our ability to group image elements of an elongated curve. In the brain, curve-tracing is associated with the gradual spread of enhanced neuronal activity over the representation of the traced curve. Previous studies demonstrated that the tracing speed is higher if curves are far apart than if they are nearby. One hypothesis is that a larger

Breakdown of holistic face processing with vertical displacement: A consequence of disrupted perceptual grouping, not biological implausibility.

Holistic processing is a fast, efficient, and seemingly effortless processing style typically linked with perceiving faces and objects of expertise-where observers appear unable to selectively attend to features within a stimulus. Holistic face processing is disrupted when the top and bottom halves are vertically separated by a substantial amount. This was attributed to the biological implausibility of the elongated faces-a domain-specific explanation. However, more recent findings of face-like holistic processing of stimuli with strong perceptual grouping cues suggest that such cues support h

Group membership and stereotype content jointly affect neural processing during resource allocation decisions.

Both stereotypes and in/outgroup categories affect judgment and decision making, but while the former reflect socially learned generalizations about other people's characteristics, the latter specify relationships with whom it is safe to affiliate. With neuroimaging data we substantiate these distinct functions and explore how their underlying neural correlates interact to influence behavioral biases. Participants in the MRI scanner are asked to share money with recipients who are stereotyped along a warm/cold dimension and who belong either to a (minimally defined) in- or outgroup. Whole-brai

Implementation of group cognitive processing therapy in correction centers: Anticipated determinants from formative evaluation.

Nearly all people in prison have experienced trauma, and many meet the criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Untreated PTSD increases the risk of substance use problems after release, contributing to a well-documented cycle of trauma, addiction, and incarceration. However, evidence-based, trauma-focused therapy for PTSD is rarely offered in prisons, and there is little research that can guide implementation efforts. In preparation for an effectiveness-implementation hybrid II pilot trial examining group-delivered cognitive processing therapy (CPT) in prisons, we conducted a format

Efficacy of individual and group cognitive processing therapy for military personnel with and without child abuse histories.

Objective: Many clinicians question whether patients with a history of childhood trauma will benefit from trauma-focused treatment. In this secondary analysis, we examined whether reports of childhood abuse moderated the efficacy of cognitive processing therapy (CPT) for active-duty military with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Methods: Service members (N = 254, mean age 33.11 years, 91% male, 41% Caucasian) were randomized to receive individual or group CPT (n = 106 endorsing and n = 148 not endorsing history of childhood abuse). Outcomes included baseline cognitive-emotional characteri

The long and complex road in the search for treatment for mental disorders: An analysis of the process in five groups of patients.

Seeking treatment for mental-health problems is a complex process, with different underlying motives in each stage. However, the entire process and these motives have hardly been investigated. This study aims to analyze the different stages of the help-seeking process and their underlying motives in five groups of patients with different mental disorders. In all, 156 patients seeking treatment in outpatient mental health clinics were individually interviewed: 71 had Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), 21 had Agoraphobia (AGO), 18 had Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), 20 had Anorexia Nervosa (A
