Growth and development in infants after renal transplantation.

Between January 1, 1978, and August 31, 1985, 13 infants aged 6 to 11 months received primary renal transplants (12, living related donor; one cadaver) at the University of Minnesota. Twelve infants are alive with functioning grafts (10 primary and two second transplants) after 4 months to 7.5 years. To assess the long-term outcome, we analyzed growth and development in the first nine infants 2 to 7.5 years after receiving their first transplant. Before transplantation, head circumference and height standard deviation scores in six of nine infants were less than -2. Five had seizures; four had

Growth and sexual development in children with meningomyelocele.

Forty-five children (25 girls; 20 boys) with meningomyelocele (MMC) were assessed for growth, skeletal maturation and pubertal development. The spinal defects were operated on shortly after birth and all children required cerebral drainage for hydrocephalus. Standard deviation scores for height, sitting height, sub-ischiac leg length, head circumference, weight and bone age were compared with aged-matched data from a normal Swiss population. The children with MMC were shorter (height SDS boys -2.34 +/- 1.57; girls -2.01 +/- 1.57, mean +/- SD, P less than 0.0005), secondary to a decrease in tru

Charting the velocity of brain growth and development.

Brain charts have emerged as a highly useful approach for understanding brain development and aging on the basis of brain imaging and have shown substantial utility in describing typical and atypical brain development with respect to a given reference model. However, all existing models are fundamentally cross-sectional and cannot capture change over time at the individual level. We address this using velocity centiles, which directly map change over time and can be overlaid onto cross-sectionally derived population centiles. We demonstrate this by modelling rates of change for 24,062 scans fr

Receptors for growth and development of Schistosoma mansoni.

The growth and development of schistosomes are tightly regulated by various receptors throughout their life cycle. Each stage of the parasite inhabits a distinct habitat and responds to different factors that drive its growth and development. With two hosts involved in its life cycle (mammalian and snail), the parasite must go through additional free-living stages to transition between them. Moreover, communication between male and female worms is essential for the maturation of females. The ability of adult schistosomes to survive in human hosts for up to thirty years demonstrates their capac

Nutritional Regulation of Embryonic Survival, Growth, and Development.

Maternal nutritional status affects conceptus development and, therefore, embryonic survival, growth, and development. These effects are apparent very early in pregnancy, which is when most embryonic losses occur. Maternal nutritional status has been shown to affect conceptus growth and gene expression throughout the periconceptual period of pregnancy (the period immediately before and after conception). Thus, the periconceptual period may be an important "window" during which the structure and function of the fetus and the placenta are "programmed" by stressors such as maternal malnutrition,

Epidemiology of Macrosomia in Korea: Growth and Development.

BACKGROUND: Macrosomia, as an infant with birth weight over 4 kg, can have several perinatal, and neonatal complications. This study aimed to estimate the incidence of macrosomia in Korea and to identify the growth and developmental outcomes and other neonatal complications. METHODS: In total, 397,203 infants who were born in 2013 with birth weight ≥ 2.5 kg and who underwent infant health check-up between their 1st and 7th visit were included from the National Health Insurance Service database. The information was obtained by the International Classification of Diseases-10 codes or self-repor

Development, Proliferation, and Growth of the Mammalian Heart.

During development, the embryonic heart grows by addition of cells from a highly proliferative progenitor pool and by subsequent precisely controlled waves of cardiomyocyte proliferation. In this period, the heart can compensate for cardiomyocyte loss by an increased proliferation rate of the remaining cardiomyocytes. This proliferative capacity is lost soon after birth, with heart growth continuing by an increase in cardiomyocyte volume. The failure of the injured adult heart to regenerate often leads to the development of heart failure, a major cause of death. With the recent observation of

Intra-uterine Growth Retardation and Development of Hypertension.

Low birth weight (LBW) is defined as a birth weight of a liveborn infant of <2,500 gram. In developed countries, LBW is commonly caused by preterm birth; while in developing countries, it is mostly due to intrauterine growth retardation. The concept of developmental origins of adult diseases, particularly on late-onset diseases such as hypertension and kidney disease, implies that there is a correlation between intrauterine milieu, intrauterine growth retardation, premature birth and infant feeding. The 'fetal origin hypothesis' suggests that metabolic diseases are directly related to poor nut

Chondrocyte hypertrophy in skeletal development, growth, and disease.

Most of our bones form through the process of endochondral ossification, which is tightly regulated by the activity of the cartilage growth plate. Chondrocyte maturation through the various stages of growth plate physiology ultimately results in hypertrophy. Chondrocyte hypertrophy is an essential contributor to longitudinal bone growth, but recent data suggest that these cells also play fundamental roles in signaling to other skeletal cells, thus coordinating endochondral ossification. On the other hand, ectopic hypertrophy of articular chondrocytes has been implicated in the pathogenesis of

Disorders of childhood growth and development: precocious puberty.

Precocious puberty is defined as pubertal development that begins at an earlier age than expected; most US pediatric endocrinology subspecialists use cutoff ages of 8 years for girls and 9 years for boys. Early activation and maturation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis leads to hormonal changes, physical signs of puberty, and acceleration of linear growth. Factors affecting puberty include race/ethnicity, obesity, and endocrine disruptors. The 2 forms of precocious puberty are central (gonadotropin-dependent precocious puberty) and peripheral (gonadotropin-independent precocious pube

Imprinted gene expression in fetal growth and development.

Experimental studies showed that genomic imprinting is fundamental in fetoplacental development by timely regulating the expression of the imprinted genes to overlook a set of events determining placenta implantation, growth and embryogenesis. We examined the expression profile of 22 imprinted genes which have been linked to pregnancy abnormalities that may ultimately influence childhood development. The study was conducted in a subset of 106 placenta samples, overrepresented with small and large for gestational age cases, from the Rhode Island Child Health Study. We investigated associations

Ihh signaling regulates mandibular symphysis development and growth.

Symphyseal secondary cartilage is important for mandibular development, but the molecular mechanisms underlying its formation remain largely unknown. Here we asked whether Indian hedgehog (Ihh) regulates symphyseal cartilage development and growth. By embryonic days 16.5 to 18.5, Sox9-expressing chondrocytes formed within condensed Tgfβ-1/Runx2-expressing mesenchymal cells at the prospective symphyseal joint site, and established a growth-plate-like structure with distinct Ihh, collagen X, and osteopontin expression patterns. In post-natal life, mesenchymal cells expressing the Ihh receptor Pa

Assessing growth and development of the facial profile.

The study of growth and development of the facial profile is of interest to clinicians and researchers in the fields of pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, and craniofacial surgery, enabling diagnosis, planning, and evaluation of treatment. Until recently, craniofacial studies addressed facial growth, facial asymmetry, and gender differences by examining changes in size. However, size changes alone do not represent fully the complicated process of craniofacial growth which also involves changes in shape. The shape of the facial profile can now be quantified with Fourier analysis, contributing t

Growth and development in preterm infants receiving fluoroquinolones.

Growth and development were followed in 7 preterm newborn infants who received fluoroquinolones in the neonatal period. Quinolones were used as a "life saving" therapy in cases of sepsis caused by bacterial agents sensitive only to these drugs. Two other groups of neonates matched for gender, birth weight and gestational age served as controls. Although the quinolone group had more severe illness, no statistically significant differences were observed in growth and development between the groups. No osteoarticular problems or joint deformities were observed in the quinolone group. Therefore, q

Growth and development following marrow transplantation for leukemia.

One hundred forty-two patients between the ages of 1 and 17 years who survived disease-free more than 1 year after marrow transplantation for hematologic malignancy had growth and development evaluations from one to 14 years posttransplant (median 4 years). Prior to transplant all children received multiagent chemotherapy and 55 also received central nervous system irradiation, but none had growth and development evaluations. Marrow transplant preparation included high-dose chemotherapy and total body irradiation (TBI) given as a single dose of 9.2 to 10.0 Gy (79 patients) or as fractionated d
