Directional hearing in insects with internally coupled ears.

Compared to all other hearing animals, insects are the smallest ones, both in absolute terms and in relation to the wavelength of most biologically relevant sounds. The ears of insects can be located at almost any possible body part, such as wings, legs, mouthparts, thorax or abdomen. The interaural distances are generally so small that cues for directional hearing such as interaural time and intensity differences (IITs and IIDs) are also incredibly small, so that the small body size should be a strong constraint for directional hearing. Yet, when tested in behavioral essays for the precision

Preliminary Assessment of the Possible Environmental Risks of Photopolymerizing Resin Particles Produced by Finishing Stereolithography 3D-Printed Objects, Employing Toxicity Test on Tropical House Crickets (Gryllodes sigillatus).

Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, is a rapidly growing field in industry. AM technologies include sintering, melting, and stereolithography. With steadily rising utilization, evaluating the environmental impact of AM materials has become essential, as these materials may act as emerging pollutants. Photopolymerizing resins (PRs) used in stereolithography can enter terrestrial ecosystems in polymerized and unpolymerized forms due to improper disposal. Insects are likely to be among the first organisms exposed to these contaminants in land ecosystems. This study evaluates t

Subcellular Information Processing in Mechanosensory Non-Spiking Interneurons.

Non-spiking neurons use graded potentials for processing neural information, unlike spiking neurons. These non-spiking neurons struggle to transmit signals distally due to membrane potential decay. Consequently, they possibly perform unique computations different from spiking neurons by using local processing with graded potential. Invertebrates, such as insects, possess both non-spiking and spiking neurons in their central nervous system. However, how the subcellular local regions in non-spiking neurons process sensory information remains unclear. We examined intracellular Ca2+ dynamics in th

Developmental experience with anthropogenic noise hinders adult mate location in an acoustically signalling invertebrate.

Phenotypic plasticity facilitates survival and reproduction in rapidly changing and novel environments. Traffic noise spectrally overlaps with (i.e. masks) the sounds used by many acoustically signalling organisms to locate and secure mates. To determine if pre-reproductive exposure to noise improves adult performance in noisy environments, we reared field crickets (Teleogryllus oceanicus) in one of three noise environments: masking traffic noise, traffic noise from which frequencies that spectrally overlap with the crickets' song were removed (non-masking), or silence. At reproductive maturit

Characterization of peptide components in the venom of the scorpion Liocheles australasiae (Hemiscorpiidae).

Scorpion venoms are composed of a number of neurotoxic peptides. A variety of toxins have been isolated from the venoms of scorpions of the family Buthidae, however, little interest has been paid to non-Buthidae scorpions. In this study, we examined the toxicity of the venom of Liocheles australasiae (Hemiscorpiidae) to mice and crickets, and characterized the peptide components by HPLC and mass spectrometry. Over 200 components were detected in the L. australasiae venom by LC/MS analysis, with components of molecular masses ranging from 500 to 5000 Da being particularly abundant. A number of

Orally active acaricidal peptide toxins from spider venom.

Numerous species of ticks and mites (collectively known as acarines) are serious pests of animals, humans, and crops. There are few commercially available acaricides and major classes of these chemicals continue to be lost from the marketplace due to resistance development or deregistration by regulatory agencies. There is consequently a pressing need to isolate new and safe acaricidal compounds. In this study, we show that two families of peptide neurotoxins isolated from the venom of the Australian funnel-web spider Hadronyche versuta are lethal to the lone star tick Amblyomma americanum. Pseudoparasitism with Gordius robustus.

The Gordius worm is a parasite of crickets and other arthropods, but not of humans. In almost all cases, the association between humans and the Gordius species, such as Gordius robustus, is purely coincidental. Gordius pseudoparasitism must be distinguished from true helminthic disease to alleviate patient anxiety and to avoid an unnecessary course of antihelminthics.

Two neuropeptide signaling pathways regulate post-mating refractoriness and reproductive system in male crickets.

After mating, some insects drastically reduce mating activity, termed post-mating refractoriness, due to physiological restrictions. Male crickets, Gryllus bimaculatus, characteristically exhibit a 1-hour post-mating refractory stage, which is controlled by terminal abdominal ganglion. The molecular mechanisms underlying the male-specific precisely timed refractory stage remain unclear. Here, we show that among 28 neuropeptide precursors expressed in the terminal abdominal ganglion, myosuppressin, allatotropin, and sNPF exhibited male-specific expression based on RT-qPCR and in situ hybridizat

Rare occurrence of Blastocystis in sea turtles and insects (cockroaches, houseflies, and crickets) from several states in Peninsular Malaysia.

Blastocystis a single-celled eukaryotic protist, is known to inhabit the intestines of various hosts, including humans, and has been implicated in a wide spectrum of symptoms, ranging from gastrointestinal issues to skin disorders, thereby establishing its status as an emerging infectious agent. In this study, the prevalence of Blastocystis infection was investigated in insects, including cockroaches, houseflies, and crickets, as well as sea turtles. Additionally, the genotypic characteristics of the isolated Blastocystis strains were examined, and the evolutionary relationships between Blasto

Effect of a single cold stress exposure on the reproductive behavior of male crickets.

Cold stress is an important abiotic factor that can impact insect physiology, behavior, and overall fitness. Upon exposure to cold temperature, many insects enter a reversible state of immobility called chill coma. If the cold stress is brief and mild enough, insects can recover and regain full mobility upon return to warmer temperatures. However, the long-term impact of sublethal cold stress on insect behavior has been understudied. Here, sexually naïve adult male Acheta domesticus crickets were exposed to a single 0 °C cold stress for 6 h. One week later, the ability of these males to mate w

The Auditory Mechanics of the Outer Ear of the Bush Cricket: A Numerical Approach.

Bush crickets have tympanal ears located in the forelegs. Their ears are elaborate, as they have outer-, middle-, and inner-ear components. The outer ear comprises an air-filled tube derived from the respiratory trachea, the acoustic trachea (AT), which transfers sound from the mesothoracic acoustic spiracle to the internal side of the ear drums in the legs. A key feature of the AT is its capacity to reduce the velocity of sound propagation and alter the acoustic driving forces of the tympanum (the ear drum), producing differences in sound pressure and time between the left and right sides, th

The behavioural effects of predator-induced stress responses in the cricket (Gryllus texensis): the upside of the stress response.

Predator-induced stress responses are thought to reduce an animal's risk of being eaten. Therefore, these stress responses should enhance anti-predator behaviour. We found that individual insects (the cricket Gryllus texensis) show reliable behavioural responses (i.e. behavioural types) in a plus-shaped maze. An individual's behaviour in the plus maze remained consistent for at least 1/2 of its adult life. However, after exposure to a model predator, both male and female crickets showed a reduced period of immobility and an increased amount of time spent under shelter compared with controls. T

Temporal pattern recognition based on instantaneous spike rate coding in a simple auditory system.

Auditory pattern recognition by the CNS is a fundamental process in acoustic communication. Because crickets communicate with stereotyped patterns of constant frequency syllables, they are established models to investigate the neuronal mechanisms of auditory pattern recognition. Here we provide evidence that for the neural processing of amplitude-modulated sounds, the instantaneous spike rate rather than the time-averaged neural activity is the appropriate coding principle by comparing both coding parameters in a thoracic interneuron (Omega neuron ON1) of the cricket (Gryllus bimaculatus) audi

Ejaculate investment differs by population, but not wing morph or perceived sperm competition risk, in Pacific field crickets.

Conspicuous sexual signals are frequently under selection from conflicting sources, such as natural versus sexual selection and precopulatory versus postcopulatory sexual selection, which may act in the same or different directions. The Pacific field cricket (Teleogryllus oceanicus) is undergoing rapid evolutionary trait loss: mutations that render males obligately silent (the "flatwing phenotype") have become established on several islands of Hawai'i. Females strongly discriminate against silent males, yet flatwings do gain matings. In this study, we take advantage of this natural system to u

Cricket protein peptides regulate adipogenic and osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells.

The growing global demand for sustainable and nutritious food sources has spurred interest in alternative proteins, including those from insects. Cricket (CK) protein, in particular, has emerged as a promising candidate due to its high nutritional value and relatively environmentally friendly production. This study investigates the potential of CK protein and its derived peptides as functional food ingredients. We focus on the effects of CK protein consumption and the specific impacts of peptides generated through enzymatic hydrolysis, a process that breaks down proteins into smaller molecules

Bite force transmission and mandible shape in grasshoppers, crickets, and allies is not driven by dietary niches.

Although species evolve in response to many intrinsic and extrinsic factors, frequently one factor has a dominating influence on a given organ system. In this context, mouthpart shape and function are thought to correlate strongly with dietary niche and this was advocated for decades, e.g., for insects. Orthoptera (grasshoppers, crickets, and allies) are a prominent case in this respect because mandible shape has been even used to predict feeding preferences. Here, we analyzed mandible shape, force transmission efficiency, and their potential correlation with dietary categories in a phylogenet

Structural and functional characterization of toxic peptides purified from the venom of the Colombian scorpion Tityus macrochirus.

The soluble venom of the scorpion Tityus macrochirus was separated by chromatographic procedures and three homogeneous peptides were obtained and their primary structures were determined. They were called: Tma1-Tma3, from the abbreviated name of the scorpion. Tma1 is a peptide containing 65 amino acids with four disulfide linkages and a molecular weight of 7386.2 Da. It is a mammalian toxin, shown to affect human sodium-channels sub-types hNav1.6 and hNav1.4. Tma2 and Tma3 are peptides containing 69 amino acids linked by four disulfide bonds, molecular weights 7819.7 and 7830.0 Da, respectivel

Bactridine's effects on DUM cricket neurons under voltage clamp conditions.

We describe the effects of six bactridines (150 nM) on cricket dorsal unpaired median (DUM) neurons. The addition of bactridine 2 to DUM neurons induced a large current component with a reversal potential more negative than -30 mV, most evident at the end of the pulses. This current was completely suppressed when 1 μM amiloride was applied before adding the bactridines. Since the amiloride sensitive current is able to distort the aim of our study, i.e. the effect of bactridines on sodium channels, all experiments were done in the presence of 1 μM amiloride. Most bactridines induced voltage shi

Panther chameleons, Furcifer pardalis, behaviorally regulate optimal exposure to UV depending on dietary vitamin D3 status.

Reptiles may bask for reasons other than thermoregulation. One alternative is to regulate homeostasis of vitamin D(3), a hormone essential to the health of many reptiles. Maintenance of vitamin D(3) homeostasis requires either regulation of exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV) or ingested vitamin D(3). However, the prey items of most vertebrates tend to be low in vitamin D(3). Thus, basking may be the primary opportunity for vitamin D(3) regulation. We tested the hypothesis that panther chameleons (Furcifer pardalis) behaviorally regulate exposure to UV in natural sunlight with high precisio

Characterization of chemosensory genes in the subterranean pest Gryllotalpa Orientalis based on genome assembly and transcriptome comparison.

BACKGROUND: Chemosensory perception plays a vital role in insect survival and adaptability, driving essential behaviours such as navigation, mate identification, and food location. This sensory process is governed by diverse gene families, including odorant-binding proteins (OBPs), olfactory receptors (ORs), ionotropic receptors (IRs), chemosensory proteins (CSPs), gustatory receptors (GRs), and sensory neuron membrane proteins (SNMPs). The oriental mole cricket (Gryllotalpa orientalis Burmeister), an invasive pest with an underground, phyllophagous lifestyle, causes substantial crop damage. T
