Reptiles in Guadeloupe (French West Indies) are a reservoir of major human Salmonella enterica serovars.

The epidemiology of human Salmonella enterica infections in Guadeloupe (French West Indies) appears to be specific, with a higher prevalence of the subspecies enterica serovars Panama and Arechavaleta (Panama and Arechavaleta) than in other regions. A study was performed in Guadeloupe to identify the reservoir of Salmonella serovars by comparing their distribution in warm- and cold-blooded animals and in humans living in Guadeloupe and mainland France. Furthermore, a case-control study was conducted in 2012-2013 to identify the main epidemiologic risk factors for S. enterica infection among ch

[Comparative epidemiological study of the tuberculosis - migrant and native subjects in Guadeloupe from 2006 to 2011].

INTRODUCTION: Most of the migrants residing in Guadeloupe are from neighboring Caribbean islands, some of which are characterized by a high incidence of tuberculosis. The objective of this retrospective and observational study was to define the epidemiological characteristics of tuberculosis affecting migrant and native populations in Guadeloupe. METHODS: We describe all cases of tuberculosis in Guadeloupe identified in these two populations between 1 July 2006 and 30 June 2011. RESULTS: The incidence of TB among migrants in Guadeloupe was seven times higher than that in native subjects in 2

[Low incidence of hip fractures among the elderly in Guadeloupe: a spared Caribbean island population].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of hip fractures among the elderly population in Guadeloupe, a French Caribbean archipelago with 440,000 inhabitants who present two rarely associated characteristics: 90% of the population is of African descent and life expectancy is similar to that of European populations. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Using the recent census report, we established that in 2002, 61,000 persons aged 60 years or more (27,000 men and 34,000 women) lived in Guadeloupe. All new cases of hip fracture among the population aged 60 years or more

[Emergence of dengue hemorrhagic fever in French Antilles. 3 initial fatal cases in Guadeloupe].

BACKGROUND: Two outbreaks of dengue hemorrhagic fever occurred in Guadeloupe (French West Indies) in successive epidemics in 1994 and 1995. The first outbreak was caused by DEN-2 virus and the second by DEN-1. CASE REPORTS: Seven life-threatening infections (WHO grade 3/4) were identified. Three previously healthy adults (including two brothers) died. Autopsy reports (2 patients) disclosed hemorrhagic serous effusions, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and in one case a spontaneous spleen rupture. DISCUSSION: Dengue fever is an emerging disease. Its severe hemorrhagic form tends to an

Schistosoma mansoni from naturally infected Rattus rattus in Guadeloupe: identification, prevalence and enzyme polymorphism.

An enzymatic comparison has been made between isolates of Schistosoma mansoni from rats and humans in Guadeloupe and a Burundi isolate of S. rodhaini. Analyses of LDH, MDH, AcP, PGM, GPI, G6PDH and HK by isoelectric focusing provided no evidence for the involvement of S. rodhaini in the recent evolution of the schistosomes currently endemic in Guadeloupe. No distinction could be made between murine and human isolates of S. mansoni and it is suggested that murine schistosomiasis should not therefore be ignored in control programmes. Rattus rattus were captured at seven sites around the island;

Temporal trends and risks factors for antimicrobial resistant Enterobacteriaceae urinary isolates from outpatients in Guadeloupe.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections are bacterial infections most commonly encountered in the community. The resistance rate of uropathogens to commonly prescribed antibiotics has increased worldwide but there are no published data concerning the resistance of strains isolated from community-acquired UTI in Guadeloupe. To assess the susceptibility patterns of Enterobacteriaceae strains isolated from outpatients in Guadeloupe we conducted a prospective study from December 2012 to May 2014 among outpatients consulting at private and public laboratories for urine analysis. Risk factors for E. co

Experimental host-induced selection in Schistosoma mansoni strains from Guadeloupe and comparison with natural observations.

Allelic frequency variation at the malate dehydrogenase (E.C.1.1.1.37) polymorphic locus (Mdh-1) was analysed during several successive generations in four strains of Schistosoma mansoni from Guadeloupe, maintained experimentally on mice. A rapid evolution of the frequency of the Mdh-1a allele is interpreted as being the result of an interaction between experimental drift and selection induced by the murine laboratory host. These experimental results are compared to the genetic structures observed among the corresponding natural populations of S. mansoni in Guadeloupe (West Indies). They stren

Neonatal bacterial septicemia in a tropical area. Four-year experience in Guadeloupe (French West Indies).

During a four-year study (1987-1990) at the Neonatal Department, University Hospital Pointe-à-Pitre (French West Indies), blood culture was systematically performed on all admitted newborns. The incidence of septicemia was 48 of 1000 admissions and 8.9 of 1000 inborn live births. Among the 107 neonatal positive blood cultures, group B streptococcus accounted for 37% of blood culture isolates and was the most frequent cause of septicemia. The overall mortality rate was 8.4%. The incidence of neonatal bacterial septicemia was among the high rates reported in the literature. The incidence of neon

A retrospective study of centipede bites in Guadeloupe, West Indies: epidemiology, medical and surgical management.

INTRODUCTION: In the Caribbean, centipede bites are well known for their painful symptoms. Although these bites are common, they rarely result in medical consultations. This study aimed to describe the frequency, clinical presentation, and management of centipede bites presenting to the emergency department. METHODS: A retrospective, descriptive study was conducted over 7 years (2015-2021) of all patients presenting to the emergency department for centipede bites. Patients were categorized into two groups: those with severe envenomation requiring hospitalization (hospitalized group) and those

Acute pulmonary histoplasmosis of immunocompetent subjects from Martinique, Guadeloupe and French Guiana: a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Histoplasmosis is a fungal disease caused by Histoplasma capsulatum. Histoplasma capsulatum var capsulatum is found in Martinique. Cluster cases following working in deserted house, have been described in Martinique. Cases of acute pulmonary histoplasmosis have been described in immunosuppressed individuals, or in case of substantial exposure to reservoirs of Histoplasma capsulatum; however, cases of acute histoplasmosis are rare in immunocompetent individuals. CASES SERIES: We report a series of 4 cases of sporadic acute pulmonary histoplasmosis in immunocompetent subjects. Inv

Infant neurodevelopment and behavior in Guadeloupe after lead exposure and Zika maternal infection during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal lead exposure is known to have neurotoxic effects on the developing fetus, while some viral infections may have a tropism for the central nervous system. Our objective was to study whether the effects of prenatal lead exposure on infant development and behaviors at 18 months of age are modified by the occurrence of a maternal infection to Zika virus (ZIKV) during pregnancy. METHODS: During the ZIKV epidemic in Guadeloupe in 2016 a cohort of pregnant women was set up. Blood samples (pregnancy, childbirth and cord) (n = 297) enabled us to measure blood lead levels aimed to

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes from Guadeloupe (French West Indies) are able to transmit yellow fever virus.

The recent yellow fever epidemic in Brazil has raised the concern of outbreaks in neighboring countries, particularly in the Caribbean region where the vector Aedes aegypti is predominant. This threat comes from the past when in the Americas, this disease caused devastating urban epidemics. We report the vector competence of Ae. aegypti from Guadeloupe for yellow fever virus by determining different parameters describing virus infection, dissemination, and transmission. The results indicate that Ae. aegypti Guadeloupe are susceptible to yellow fever virus with viral particles detected in mosqu

Epidemiology of Chikungunya Virus Outbreaks in Guadeloupe and Martinique, 2014: An Observational Study in Volunteer Blood Donors.

BACKGROUND: During Dec-2013, a chikungunya virus (CHIKV) outbreak was first detected in the French-West Indies. Subsequently, the virus dispersed to other Caribbean islands, continental America and many islands in the Pacific Ocean. Previous estimates of the attack rate were based on declaration of clinically suspected cases. METHODS/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Individual testing for CHIKV RNA of all (n = 16,386) blood donations between Feb-24th 2014 and Jan-31st 2015 identified 0·36% and 0·42% of positives in Guadeloupe and Martinique, respectively.
