Understanding interpersonal guilt: Associations with attachment, altruism, and personality pathology.

The aim of this article is to empirically investigate the relationships among interpersonal guilt, as conceived within control-mastery theory (CMT), and attachment, altruism, and personality pathology in an English-speaking sample. An online sample of 393 participants was recruited to complete the Interpersonal Guilt Rating Scale self-report version-15 (IGRS-15s), together with other empirically validated measures for the assessment of attachment, altruism, and personality pathology. On the basis of previous studies conducted in Italian-speaking samples, we hypothesized that survivor guilt, se

5-HT1A receptors, gene repression, and depression: guilt by association.

The serotonin system is implicated in major depression and suicide and is negatively regulated by somatodendritic 5-HT1A autoreceptors. Desensitization of 5-HT1A autoreceptors is implicated in the 2- to 3-week latency for antidepressant treatments. Alterations in 5-HT1A receptor levels are reported in depression and suicide, and gene knockout of the 5-HT1A receptor results in an anxiety phenotype, suggesting that abnormal transcriptional regulation of this receptor gene may underlie these disorders. The 5-HT1A receptor gene is negatively regulated in neurons by repressors including REST/NRSF,

Extramammary Paget disease with underlying hidradenoma papilliferum: guilt by association?

Extramammary Paget disease (EMPD) is a heterogenous entity representing either an intraepidermal adenocarcinoma in situ with apocrine differentiation or an expression of underlying malignancy of the skin or of the intestinal or genitourinary tract. The coexistence of EMPD with a benign underlying hidradenoma papilliferumn (HP) is, however, exceptional. We present the case of a 79-year-old woman with diffuse and patchy gray-white lesions involving her left vulva as well as an underlying 0.7-cm asymptomatic firm nodule. Histologically, the epidermis and dermis showed features characteristic of E

Guilt by association: intestinal metaplasia does not progress to gastric cancer.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review integrates the new thinking about relationships between gastric cancer and intestinal metaplasia/pseudopyloric metaplasia (SPEM). We address whether recent studies have closed or widened the knowledge gap regarding gastric cancer pathogenesis in mice or humans. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies in mouse models have provided a variety of new insights into the cellular origin and progression of events resulting in gastric cancer. Many suggest a direct transformation from intestinal metaplasia/pseudopyloric metaplasia/SPEM to gastric cancer. However, results from dif

Experiences of shame and guilt in anorexia and bulimia nervosa: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Emotional states may play an important role in the development and maintenance of anorexia (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). This systematic review aimed to examine the evidence regarding the relationship that shame and guilt have with two eating disorders, AN and BN. METHODS: Four major databases (Pubmed, PsychINFO, Web of Science, Medline) were searched (up until April 2018) for studies measuring guilt or shame in clinically diagnosed AN and BN groups. Included papers were evaluated for risk of bias. RESULTS: Twenty-four papers met the inclusion criteria. Several methodological is

[Shame, guilt and social anxiety in obesity with binge-eating disorder].

Binge-eating disorder (BED) is the most common eating disorder found in obese people. The present study compared 89 obese participants with and without BED in terms of eating-, weight- and body related shame and guilt and their association to self-esteem and social anxiety. The results illustrated that obese people with BED reported higher scores in disorder specific shame and guilt, except feeling shame about their weight and their body; they suffered from lower self-esteem than obese without BED. The results confirmed that self-esteem is a significant statistical predictor of feeling shame.

Health claims increase snack consumption through reduced guilt and perceived healthiness.

BACKGROUND: Front-of-pack health claims such as "low-fat" and "high-protein" may influence eating behavior by altering perceived healthiness and feelings of guilt, potentially leading to increased food intake. METHODS: An acute, single-session randomized, controlled, between-subjects laboratory experiment was conducted with 60 adults (18-35 y) assigned to low-fat, high-protein, or control conditions (n = 20/group). Participants consumed identical snacks ad libitum. The primary short-term outcome was snack intake (grams); secondary outcomes included perceived healthiness, guilt, and purchase i

Guilt Feelings in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: An Investigation between Diagnostic Groups.

Guilt plays a role in various forms of psychopathology. However, different types of guilt might be involved in different mental disorders. Obsessive-compulsive (OC) patients are prone to a type of guilt in which the violation of an internalized moral norm is necessary and sufficient, whereas data suggest that depression might be linked to more interpersonal types of guilt. However, the extent to which a specific guilt phenomenology is involved in each condition is yet to be determined. Here we assessed the association between different types of guilt and different diagnostic groups. Two clinic

Psychopathic traits mediate guilt-related anterior midcingulate activity under authority pressure.

Coercive power has different effects on individuals, and which were unable to be fully addressed in Milgram's famous studies on obedience to authority. While some individuals exhibited high levels of guilt-related anxiety and refused orders to harm, others followed coercive orders throughout the whole event. The lack of guilt is a well-known characteristic of psychopathy, and recent evidence portrays psychopathic personalities on a continuum of clustered traits, while being pervasive in a significant proportion in the population. To investigate whether psychopathic traits better explain discre

Designing and psychometrics properties of Existential Guilt Questionnaire in cancer patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Clinically, existential issues are of significant importance in cancer patients, particularly existential guilt. To measure this construct, a suitable tool is needed. Therefore, this study aimed to design and validate the Existential Guilt Questionnaire (EGQ) in cancer patients. METHOD: This study employed a sequential exploratory mixed-method design for tool development. In the qualitative phase of tool design, the hybrid concept analysis method was used to explain the concept of existential guilt and generate items. Subsequently, psychometric properties such as fac

The Role of Religiosity and Guilt in Symptomatology and Outcome of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

IMPORTANCE: Religiosity and guilt are commonly featured in obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD). The role of religiosity and guilt in OCD has been frequently studied in the literature and suggested that greater religiosity/spirituality, paranormal beliefs, and magical ideation have often been associated with enhanced obsessive-compulsive behavior. India being a multi-religious country, it is particularly notable that a research was required to assess the role of religiosity and guilt in symptomatology and outcome in OCD, a condition in which religious themes are often present. It has also been

The role of rumination in the guilt associated with bereavement according to cause of death.

The purpose of this study was to analyse the role rumination plays in the relationship between cause of death and the guilt present during bereavement. The sample consisted of 90 people that had suffered a loss due to an expected or unexpected natural death, suicide or accident. The results suggest that rumination increases the levels of guilt felt by people that had suffered a loss due to suicide compared to those whose loss was due to an expected natural death. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms with an influence on bereavement.

Frontal fibrosing alopecia and lupus overlap in a man: guilt by association?

Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is a scarring alopecia, now an accepted subset variant of lichen planopilaris (LPP). Its occurrence in males is rare, with only nine cases reported to date. We describe a case of FFA in a male in association with lupus erythematosus. Multiple biopsies from the scalp, eyebrow and arm showed features consistent with LPP, in keeping with the clinical presentation of FFA. Direct immunofluorescence studies showed a positive lupus band test. Further serological investigation confirmed the presence of antinuclear, anticardiolipin and lupus anticoagulant antibodies. Wh

Shame, guilt, symptoms of depression, and reported history of psychological maltreatment.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to provide preliminary data extending earlier research on shame and guilt, examining their relationships both to symptoms of depression and to psychological maltreatment. Symptoms of depression were expected to correlate positively with shame, but not with guilt. Psychological maltreatment was also expected to correlate positively with shame. The relationship between psychological maltreatment and guilt was examined on an exploratory basis. METHOD: Two hundred and eighty participants from a public community college and a private university compl

"It isn't fair": postoperative depression and other manifestations of survivor guilt.

The objective of this paper is to demonstrate and explain an array of phenomena, clinical and social, that share a common dynamic although they seem to be quite disparate. These experiences range from combat neuroses to postoperative depressions. Situations and case histories demonstrating this dynamic are presented, namely, the guilt of getting more than one's share of life, material possessions, or physical gifts than the people one loves. The relationship of this getting more and the concept of the "zero-sum game" is discussed. Suggestions are presented for the treatment of depressions resu

[Trait guilt discriminate between anthropophobic tendency and social anxiety in adolescents].

This study examined the role of trait guilt in discriminating between anthropophobic tendency and social anxiety. 212 University and technical college students (103 males and 109 females) were administered a questionnaire with a trait guilt scale, an anthropophobic tendency scale, and a social anxiety scale. Trait guilt showed a positive correlation with anthropophobic tendency when the influence of social anxiety was controlled. When the influence of Anthropophobic tendency was controlled, trait guilt did not correlate as highly with social anxiety. These results were discussed related to cul

Guilt and Depressive Symptoms: The Mediating Role of Self-Compassion in Perinatal Loss.

Background: Perinatal loss is a painful and often invisible experience that deeply challenges mental and emotional health, with lasting impact on those who endure it. Method: This study assessed guilt, depressive symptoms, and self-compassion in portuguese women after perinatal loss, considering timing of the loss. The mediating effect of self-compassion on guilt and depressive symptoms was also examined, as well as the relationships between variables. Of the 545 women who answered the online questionnaire, 501 were eligible. Results: Participants reported high depressive symptoms, and moderat

Feeling of Guilt, Stress, and Self-Compassion Among Nursing Staff in the Workplace.

Caring for others is a core goal of nursing staff, but providing inadequate care can lead to feelings of guilt which might result in heightened levels of stress. However, self-compassion might function as a buffer, since it can help to cope with feelings of guilt. A cross-sectional survey with an exploratory approach was conducted to investigate quantitative associations between guilt and stress, as well as self-compassion as a potential moderator. Additionally, qualitative data were collected to explore triggers and coping mechanisms related to workplace guilt. A heterogeneous sample of nursi

Stress, perceived competence and guilt as predictors of depression in parents with chronic pain.

INTRODUCTION: Suffering from chronic pain (CP) and coping with parenthood can be challenging for parental mental health. Pain can hinder the ability to deal with demands related to parenthood, which can negatively affect their psychological well-being because of unmet caregiving expectations. METHODS: Considering the limited amount of research regarding the mental health of parents with CP, the study's main aim was to test a predictive model based on previous scientific literature, using structural equation analysis, in which parental competence and parental guilt partially mediate the relati
