Resurrection of Mycteronastes (Monogenoidea: Monocotylidae), with Description of Mycteronastes caalusi n. sp. from Olfactory Sacs of the Smalltooth Sawfish, Pristis pectinata (Pristiformes: Pristidae), in the Gulf of Mexico off Florida.

Mycteronastes Kearn and Beverley-Burton, 1990 (Monogenoidea: Monocotylidae: Merizocotylinae) was resurrected from subjective synonymy with Merizocotyle Cerfontaine, 1894 , and its diagnosis was emended to include monocotylids with a haptor lacking a central loculus and having 5 peripheral (2 bilateral pairs and an unpaired anteromedial loculus), 1 interhamular, and 17 marginal loculi. The 3 species of Mycteronastes accepted herein are parasitic within the olfactory sacs of rays and sawfishes: Mycteronastes icopae ( Beverley-Burton and Williams, 1989 ) Kearn and Beverley-Burton, 1990 (type spec

The 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill: the trauma signature of an ecological disaster.

The 2010 Deepwater Horizon “British Petroleum (BP)” oil spill was a mega-disaster characterized as the petroleum industry’s largest-volume marine oil spill in history. Following a “wellhead blowout” that destroyed the drilling platform, 4.9 million barrels of petroleum flowed into the Gulf of Mexico over 87 days and the spill expanded to cover 68,000 square miles of sea surface. However, despite the expansive scope of the event, systematic surveys of affected coastal populations found only modest effects on mental health and substance abuse. An established trauma signature (TSIG) methodology w

The Evolving Medical and Veterinary Importance of the Gulf Coast tick (Acari: Ixodidae).

Amblyomma maculatum Koch (the Gulf Coast tick) is a three-host, ixodid tick that is distributed throughout much of the southeastern and south-central United States, as well as several countries throughout Central and South America. A considerable amount of scientific literature followed the original description of A. maculatum in 1844; nonetheless, the Gulf Coast tick was not recognized as a vector of any known pathogen of animals or humans for >150 years. It is now identified as the principal vector of Hepatozoon americanum, the agent responsible for American canine hepatozoonosis, and Ricket

Huffmanela markgracei sp. n. (Nematoda: Trichosomoididae) from buccal cavity of Atlantic sharpnose shark, Rhizoprionodon terraenovae (Carcharhiniformes: Carcharhinidae), in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico off Texas.

Eggs of Huffmanela markgracei sp. n. infected one of three Atlantic sharpnose sharks, Rhizoprionodon terraenovae (Richardson) (Carcharhiniformes: Carcharhinidae) captured by bottom long-line in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico off Padre Island, Texas. Eggs in the skin formed sinuous tracks (1-8 eggs wide; 1-4 eggs deep; 150 eggs/mm2) occupying a swath of the skin 22 cm x 2 cm on the tongue, branchial arches and the dorsal surface of the buccal cavity. Eggs had transverse eggshell ridges (branching and non-branching), had shells that were clear, amber or brown, and measured 90-113 microm (x = 10

De novo Genome Assembly, Annotation, and Comparative Analysis of the Lined Sole Achirus lineatus as a Resource for Evolutionary and Environmental Genomics.

The lined sole, Achirus lineatus, is a widely distributed species in the Gulf of Mexico. This basin is constantly exposed to hydrocarbon contamination due to natural oil seeps, oil extraction and oil spills. Previous studies suggest the line sole A. lineatus as a possible sentinel species for oil spills; but the overall landscape of xenobiotic metabolism in this species remains poorly understood. Access to high-quality reference genomes will improve this situation. Here, we report the first whole-genome sequence, assembly, and annotation of the lined sole A. lineatus. We generated 132 Gb of Pa

Marine harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the United States: History, current status and future trends.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are diverse phenomena involving multiple. species and classes of algae that occupy a broad range of habitats from lakes to oceans and produce a multiplicity of toxins or bioactive compounds that impact many different resources. Here, a review of the status of this complex array of marine HAB problems in the U.S. is presented, providing historical information and trends as well as future perspectives. The study relies on thirty years (1990-2019) of data in HAEDAT - the IOC-ICES-PICES Harmful Algal Event database, but also includes many other reports. At a qualitative

The public health significance of finding autochthonous melioidosis cases in the continental United States.

Recently, the pathogen that causes melioidosis, Burkholderia pseudomallei, was found in the Gulf Coast region of Mississippi, United States of America, associated with human cases and as bacteria in the soil of affected areas. Therefore, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has declared the pathogen as endemic in the continental United States for the first time. This viewpoint discusses some issues that the research, public health communities, and government agencies need to address.

Genetic variation of St. Louis encephalitis virus.

St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) has been regularly isolated throughout the Americas since 1933. Previous phylogenetic studies involving 62 isolates have defined seven major lineages (I-VII), further divided into 14 clades. In this study, 28 strains isolated in Texas in 1991 and 2001-2003, and three older, previously unsequenced strains from Jamaica and California were sequenced over the envelope protein gene. The inclusion of these new sequences, and others published since 2001, has allowed better delineation of the previously published SLEV lineages, in particular the clades of lineage II

Life on the edge: Two dissimilar extreme events alter food webs through modification of top-down control.

Climate change is causing rapid, unexpected changes to ecosystems through alteration to environmental regimes, modification of species interactions, and increased frequency and magnitude of disturbances. Yet, how the type of disturbance affects food webs remains ambiguous. Long-term studies capturing ecosystem responses to extreme events are necessary to understand climate effects on species interactions and ecosystem resilience but remain rare. In the Gulf of Mexico, our 8-year study captured two disturbances that had contrasting effects on predator abundance and cascading effects on estuarin

Temporal dynamics of the summer soundscape near oil platforms of the shallow continental shelf off Louisiana.

The northern Gulf of Mexico contains productive soft bottom environments with numerous oil rigs that contain epibionts and reef associated fishes. Soundscapes at these structures may provide insight on diel and seasonal animal activity near these habitats and influences of stressors such as vessel noise, hypoxia, and storms. Yet, bioacoustics of this area remains understudied. We used passive acoustic and abiotic monitoring to better understand biological soundscapes in the shallow continental shelf environment off Louisiana, U.S.A. at two oil rigs off Terrebonne Bay from June-September 2021.

Incidence of chronic respiratory conditions among oil spill responders: Five years of follow-up in the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Coast Guard Cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Over ten years after the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill, our understanding of long term respiratory health risks associated with oil spill response exposures is limited. We conducted a prospective analysis in a cohort of U.S. Coast Guard personnel with universal military healthcare. METHODS: For all active duty cohort members (N = 45,193) in the DWH Oil Spill Coast Guard Cohort Study we obtained medical encounter data from October 01, 2007 to September 30, 2015 (i.e., ~2.5 years pre-spill; ~5.5 years post-spill). Two New Species of Telorchis (Digenea: Telorchiidae) from a Green Turtle, Chelonia Mydas (Cheloniidae), from the Upper Texas Coast with a Key to North American Species of Telorchis.

Sea turtles are difficult to sample because of their protected status; however, museum collections and sea turtle stranding networks provide unique opportunities for parasitological research. Four gastrointestinal tracts from stranded, endangered green turtles, Chelonia mydas, were collected between 1993 and 1995 from the upper Texas coast and opportunistically sampled for parasite fauna. Two new species of Telorchis, a common freshwater amphibian and reptilian intestinal parasite genus, were found and described. The impact of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorous on responses of microbial plankton to the Texas City "Y" oil spill in Galveston Bay, Texas (USA).

Ongoing bioremediation research seeks to promote naturally occurring microbial polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) degradation during and after oil spill events. However, complex relationships among functionally different microbial groups, nutrients and PAHs remain unconstrained. We conducted a surface water survey and corresponding nutrient amendment bioassays following the Texas City "Y" oil spill in Galveston Bay, Texas. Resident microbial groups, defined as either heterotrophic or autotrophic were enumerated by flow cytometry. Heterotrophic abundance was increased by oil regardless of nu
