Who bought a gun during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States?: Associations with QAnon beliefs, right-wing political attitudes, intimate partner violence, antisocial behavior, suicidality, and mental health and substance use problems.

There was a large spike in gun purchases and gun violence during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. We used an online U.S. national survey (N = 1036) to examine the characteristics of people who purchased a gun between March 2020 and October 2021 (n = 103) and compared them to non-gun owners (n = 763) and people who own a gun but did not purchase a gun during the COVID-19 pandemic (n = 170). Compared to non-gun owners, pandemic gun buyers were younger and more likely to be male, White race, and to affiliate with the Republican party. Compared to non-gun owners and pr

Examining the relationship between temperature and firearm violence: A comparison of metrics.

OBJECTIVE: To examine and compare the predictive capacities of four temperature metrics on firearm violence: daily maximum temperature, daily apparent maximum temperature, daily deviation from normal temperature, and consecutive days of high heat. METHOD: We analyzed daily firearm violence incidents in Syracuse, New York from 2010-2022 using Generalized Linear Autoregressive Moving Average models. Daily maximum temperature, and daily deviation from normal temperature were directly obtained from the National Centers for Environmental Information. Daily apparent maximum temperature was created

Diagnostic performance of CT colonography in a population with high prevalence of large bowel disease.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationship between psychopathy and subtypes of aggression and firearm violence among a high-risk, community-based sample of adults. Specifically, it assessed whether the four-facet model of psychopathy (interpersonal, affective, lifestyle, and antisocial) was differentially associated with reactive and proactive aggression and reactive and proactive gun violence. Additionally, a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to evaluate the factor structure of the Self-Report Psychopathy Short Form (SRP-SF) in this population. METHOD: A total of 458 viol

Interactions Between Forced Sexual Intercourse Victimization and Gender on Violent Behaviors: Youth Risk Behavior Survey 2017-2019.

In recent years, the United States has seen an increase in gun-related violence and school shootings. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that the incidence of gun carrying among high-school students has declined. Nevertheless, an examination of the underlying factors that increase the risk of violence-related behaviors is necessary to develop interventions to decrease gun use among high-school students. General Strain Theory (GST) predicts that victims of violence are (a) significantly more likely to engage in violent behaviors and (b) the increased risk of violent behavi

The Association Between Serious Mental Health Problems and Violence: Some Common Assumptions and Misconceptions.

The media, the general public, and politicians often emphasize that mental illness is a precursor and a cause of violence, particularly emphasizing an assumed relationship between mental illness, including psychopathy and psychosis, and the use of guns to commit violence. We report which individuals with serious mental health problems have an increased risk to commit violence (including gun violence). Second, we answer the question to what extent serious mental health problems explain most violence and especially gun-related violence. And what is the opinion of experts on these questions? Thir

Firearm Violence and Children.

Firearm violence is a global humanitarian crisis and a leading cause of death among children and adolescents. This article synthesizes epidemiologic data, subgroup disparities, psychosocial consequences, and evidence-informed intervention strategies. Particular attention is given to the after-school period, school and community-based interventions, and the role of pediatric clinicians in prevention. Policy implications, gaps in data, and future directions are also discussed. Firearm violence must be recognized as a pediatric public health emergency requiring coordinated action across clinical,

Active shooters: The underutilisation of emergency operations centres - the need for a checklist to guide response and recovery.

The emergency operations centre (EOC) is a critical emergency response and recovery component that provides information management and resource allocation. EOCs are often used during all hazards; however, after reviewing over 25 after-action reports for active shooter incidents, they are frequently underutilised. Not activating or delaying activation can slow recovery efforts and lead to chaos for the first responders and the public due to a lack of situational awareness. Historical active shooter incidents, such as the San Bernardino attack, Uvalde school shooting and Aurora theatre shooting,

Screening for Firearm Violence Exposure in Adolescents and Young Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Firearm violence now accounts for more than 45,000 deaths annually in America, making it the leading cause of death in the pediatric population. Despite this, primary care clinicians (PCCs) lack screening tools to assess a patient's future risk of gun violence, hampering the ability to allocate resources that could prevent morbidity and mortality. METHODS: Longitudinal quantitative study designed to evaluate whether the Serious fighting, Friend weapon carrying, community Environment, and firearm Threats (SaFETy) score and other measures could predict gun violence exposure over 6

Childhood risk factors associated with adolescent gun carrying among Black and White males: An examination of self-protection, social influence, and antisocial propensity explanations.

Adolescent gun violence is a serious public health issue that disproportionately affects young Black males. Although it has been postulated that differential exposure to childhood risk factors might account for racial differences in adolescent gun carrying, no longitudinal studies have directly examined this issue. We examined whether childhood risk factors indexing neighborhood crime, peer delinquency, and conduct problems predicted the initiation of adolescent gun carrying among a community sample of Black and White boys. Analyses then examined whether racial differences in risk factors acco

Sources of guns to dangerous people: what we learn by asking them.

Gun violence exacts a lethal toll on public health. This paper focuses on reducing access to firearms by dangerous offenders, contributing original empirical data on the gun transactions that arm offenders in Chicago. Conducted in the fall of 2013, analysis of an open-ended survey of 99 inmates of Cook County Jail focuses on a subset of violence-prone individuals with the goal of improving law enforcement actions. Among our principal findings: *Our respondents (adult offenders living in Chicago or nearby) obtain most of their guns from their social network of personal connections. Rarely is th

Callous-Unemotional Traits and Risk of Gun Carrying and Use During Crime.

OBJECTIVE: With the addition of the "with limited prosocial emotions" specifier within the diagnosis of conduct disorder (DSM-5) and of conduct-dissocial disorder (ICD-11) to designate those with elevated callous-unemotional traits, the authors examined the role that callous-unemotional traits play in the risk for gun carrying and gun use during a crime in a sample at high risk for gun violence. METHODS: Male juvenile offenders (N=1,215) from three regions of the United States were assessed after their first arrest and then reassessed every 6 months for 36 months and again at 48 months. Policy pathways to address American youth firearm injury and death.

Context: The burden of firearm violence and death are uniquely American problems. Over 90% of firearm deaths among children and adolescents in high income countries occur in the United States. Despite similar overall crime rates, the gun homicide rate is about 25 times higher in the U.S. than other Western democracies, and 49 times higher for those aged 15-24 years. Firearm-related injuries are a leading cause of child and adolescent deaths, second only to motor vehicle crashes. Approximately 4.6 million children are living in U.S. homes with at least one loaded, unlocked firearm. Reducing gun

Not an 'iron pipeline', but many capillaries: regulating passive transactions in Los Angeles' secondary, illegal gun market.

OBJECTIVES: California has strict firearm-related laws and is exceptional in its regulation of firearms retailers. Though evidence suggests that these laws can reduce illegal access to guns, high levels of gun violence persist in Los Angeles (LA), California. This research seeks to describe the sources of guns accessed by active offenders in LA, California and reports offenders' motivations for obtaining guns. SETTING: Los Angeles County Jail (LACJ) system (four facilities). METHODS: Random sampling from a screened pool of eligible participants was used to conduct qualitative semistructured

Violent Experiences and Patterns of Firearm Ownership From Childhood to Young Adulthood.

IMPORTANCE: Young adults in their 20s are at high relative risk for self- and other-directed firearm injury, but little is known about gun access patterns for this group. OBJECTIVE: To describe the longitudinal patterns of firearm access from childhood to young adulthood and to estimate whether violence experienced as a child or as an adult is associated with gun ownership in young adulthood. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The Great Smoky Mountains Study included participants from 11 contiguous, mostly rural counties in the Southeastern US. The first wave was completed in 1993 and the mo

Assessing Links Between Alcohol Exposure and Firearm Violence: A Scoping Review Update.

BACKGROUND: Firearm violence remains a leading cause of death and injury in the United States. Prior research supports that alcohol exposures, including individual-level alcohol use and alcohol control policies, are modifiable risk factors for firearm violence, yet additional research is needed to support prevention efforts. OBJECTIVES: This scoping review aims to update a prior 2016 systematic review on the links between alcohol exposure and firearm violence to examine whether current studies indicate causal links between alcohol use, alcohol interventions, and firearm violence-related outco

Involvement of Guns in Nonfatal Conflict Between Adult Children and Their Parents.

The objectives of the present analyses are to examine the frequency, nature, and correlates of nonfatal gun use in incidents of conflict between adult children and their parents, to which police were summoned. A cross-sectional study design was used with all cases of domestic violence to which police were called between adult children and their parents, in Philadelphia, PA, in 2013 (N = 6,248). Data were drawn from forms required to be completed by police when responding to domestic violence calls for assistance. A series of multivariate logistic regression models were estimated. Of the 6,248

Misappropriating vulnerability: Assessing the utility of the social vulnerability index as a predictor of firearm violence.

The Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), a measure designed to gauge a community's resilience to natural disasters, such as hurricanes or wildfires, has been increasingly adopted in community violence research to identify places at risk of firearm-related harms. We take stock of recent research on social vulnerability and critically assess the conceptual and empirical validity of the SVI in the context of community firearm violence. We first compare the measurement properties of the SVI with a conventional index of concentrated disadvantage (CDI) commonplace in social science research on communit

Guns, Culture or Mental Health? Framing Mass Shootings as a Public Health Crisis.

In recent years, public health scholars and policymakers have been calling for increased research on the public health implications of gun violence. However, scientific research on this issue has been stifled by a 1996 budget rider that eliminated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) funding for gun research. In this study, we examined newspaper coverage of three mass shootings that took place over a 20-year period before and after the passage of this budget rider. We found that sources and frames provided by news media to contextualize gun violence shifted markedly over time, pr

Drug Dealing and Gun Carrying go Hand in Hand: Examining How Juvenile Offenders' Gun Carrying Changes Before and After Drug Dealing Spells across 84 Months.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to examine whether periods of marijuana and other illicit drug dealing ("spells" of dealing) are associated with changes in young male offenders' gun carrying behavior. METHODS: This paper uses 84 months of data from a sample of 479 serious juvenile male offenders who were assessed every six months for three years and then annually for four years. At each assessment, participants reported on engagement in illicit behaviors, including drug dealing and gun carrying, in each month since the prior interview.
