CLINICAL TECHNIQUE: It is generally accepted that the success of root-canal treatment is mainly dependent on the proper cleaning, shaping and hermetic obturation of root canals. Obturation of the root canal is of importance as 60% of endodontic failures are attributable to incomplete obliteration of the root-canal system. The clinical application of many obturation techniques used today demands the preservation of the natural apical construction or the preparation of an artificial equivalent during chemo-mechanical preparation. However, in clinical practice there are cases where the apical for

INTRODUCTION: Root canal retreatment often employs organic solvents like chloroform, eucalyptol, and orange oil. However, studies comparing their effectiveness yield inconsistent results. The quantity of d-limonene, a crucial component in orange oil, varies depending on the oil production method. Cold-pressed orange oil has been observed to contain the highest d-limonene levels. This study investigates the comparative solvent effects of cold-pressed and steam-hydrodistilled orange oils on gutta-percha and GuttaFlow2, typically used components in root canal fillings.

This study aimed to evaluate the chemical composition, radiopacity, and antimicrobial activity of five standardized (#25) commercially available gutta-percha points (ProTaper Gold, Zarc, Cerkamed, Autofit, and Reciproc R25), before and after a rapid disinfection protocol. The cones were divided into three groups: untreated (control), treated with sodium hypochlorite, and treated with sodium hypochlorite followed by ethanol rinsing. Significant compositional differences, as assessed by a solvent extraction method, were observed among brands, with gutta-percha content ranging from 11.6 to 17.5%,

Background/Objectives: Periradicular disease is largely microbial in origin. Even gutta-percha (GP) cones manufactured under aseptic conditions can acquire contaminants during handling or storage, undermining otherwise adequate canal preparation. To assess residual antimicrobial activity on GP cones after brief exposure to five endodontic disinfectants: sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) 1%, 2.5%, 5.25%; chlorhexidine (CHX) 2%; and glutaraldehyde 2% against Enterococcus faecalis and Candida albicans. Methods: Standardized GP cones were dipped for 5-120 s, blotted on neutralizing gauze, and placed on

INTRODUCTION: To evaluate the success rate of nonsurgical root canal retreatment at the 2-3-year follow-up and identify the possible prognostic factors.
METHODS: Patients who underwent root canal retreatment at a university dental clinic were contacted for clinical and radiographic follow-up. The retreatment outcomes in these cases were based on clinical signs, symptoms, and radiographic criteria. Inter- and intraexaminer concordances were calculated using Cohen's kappa coefficient. The retreatment outcome was dichotomized into success or failure according to strict and loose criteria. The ra

The optimal bonding of adhesives to dentin requires the sealer to be completely removed from dentinal walls. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different cleaning procedures using gutta-percha solvents on bond strength of adhesive resins to AH Plus contaminated dentin (APCD). The pulp chamber dentin surfaces were contaminated with AH Plus and cleaned with five different techniques (dry cotton, chloroform, orange oil, eucalyptol, and ethanol). Then, Clearfil SE Bond (CSE) (Kuraray), and Tetric N Bond (TNB) (Ivoclar Vivadent) were applied and filled with a composite resin. Th

Any foreign body in the paranasal sinuses can cause chronic complications. It is therefore important to remove these foreign bodies meticulously. Various approaches are available to accomplish this. This article is a case report of a patient who had gutta-percha as a foreign body in left maxillary sinus, after a gutta-percha point had been used to trace a sinus to confirm that it was an oroantral fistula. Traditional surgical approaches to the maxillary sinus require invasive techniques, such as radical antrostomy and the Caldwell-Luc approach. These may result in further complications and mor

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the apical sealing ability of an epoxy resin root canal sealer (AH-26) when used with different gutta-percha obturation techniques (i.e. cold lateral condensation, warm vertical condensation, hybrid condensation) and with Thermafil and Soft-Core obturators. Straight single-rooted teeth with mature apices were prepared according to the crown-down/step-back technique and divided in five groups of 45 teeth and one group of 12 control teeth. After root canal filling 15 teeth of each group were kept for 1 day, another 15 teeth for 1 week, and another

We describe here a procedure of endoscopic removal of a gutta-percha point under the maxillary sinus mucosa by using an ultrathin arthroscope. In this study, a 1.2-mm-diameter ultrathin arthroscope was introduced for observation into the maxillary sinus. The surgical technique is suggested to be a reliable and minimally invasive procedure that provides limited incision and bone removal and respects the integrity of the sinus.

Background: Persistent endodontic infections involving Enterococcus faecalis and Candida albicans are a major cause of root canal treatment failure. Although conventional irrigants, such as sodium hypochlorite and chlorhexidine (CHX), exhibit strong immediate antimicrobial activity, microbes may survive and recover from the initial antimicrobial effect, hence limiting their effectiveness, especially in complex root canal anatomies and in the apical terminus of the tooth. Antibacterial dressing techniques were not proven satisfactory due to depletion of the antibacterial component or difficulty
