BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is prevalent throughout the world and is a devastating public health problem. Healthcare workers (HCWs) are tasked with treating victims of IPV but may be victims themselves. Guyana is a lower-middle income country in South America. A case of the Gilles de la Tourette syndrome from Guyana in South America is presented. The patient had a positive family history as well as coprolalia, echolalia, and attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity. We studied 150 cases of adolescents under 16 having delivered at the maternity of Saint Laurent du Maroni hospital in French Guyana. These pregnancies were compared with those of 150 parturient women aged between 18 and 25. Significant differences were found between the two groups in terms of vaginal infectious diseases, premature birth rate and perinatal mortality. OBJECTIVE: Prompted by anecdotal evidence of a higher rate of type 2 diabetes, we set out to investigate the prevalence of diabetes, its risk factors, and co-morbidities among immigrant Guyanese patients being treated in a family medicine health center in Schenectady, New York.
METHODS: Patients were ascertained from a registration database of all patients aged > or = 30 years who were treated from 2004 to 2006. We then conducted a detailed retrospective chart review of all Guyanese, Caucasian, African American, and Hispanic patients with diabetes and randomly selected non-diabetic controls.

A revision is made of the previously poorly studied blackfly fauna from the south-western border of Guyana with Brazil. Notes on the biosystematics of the species found are provided, together with keys and illustrations based on their morphology. Of the 14 species recorded, eight are anthropophilic and two of these (Simulium oyapockense s.l. and S. guianense s.l.) are proven vectors of human onchocerciasis in the nearby Amazonia focus of the disease in neighbouring Brazil.

The observation in French Guyana of pemphigus foliaceus having long mimicked eczema or psoriasis and turning 5 year later as an exudative erythroderma, points out the clinical polymorphism of the disease. Several clinical features are analysed that might support the hypothesis of autonomy of the Brazilian type: such as for example joint involvement. But the main point concerns epidemiology since this disease seems to spread out from the classical endemic Brazilian provinces to northern countries as socio-economical conditions improve in the south.
