Self-Efficacy and Performance in Artistic Gymnastics: A Systematic Review.

Self-efficacy is relevant to sport performance, but its role in artistic gymnastics is unclear because studies vary in construct definition, timing, and outcomes. This PRISMA 2020- and PERSIST 2021-informed systematic review was prospectively registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251266838). PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and EBSCOhost (SPORTDiscus and APA PsycInfo) were searched from inception to 18 December 2025, supplemented by backward reference-list checking and forward citation searching. Eligible quantitative studies assessed self-efficacy or task- or apparatus-specific efficacy expectations,

Comparative analysis of injury profiles in artistic and rhythmic gymnastics.

Injuries are common in both artistic and rhythmic gymnastics due to intense training, biomechanics, and previous injuries. Despite different apparatus and movement patterns, both disciplines pose a high injury risk. This study compared injury prevalence, types, affected body regions, and risk factors between artistic and rhythmic gymnasts. A retrospective survey was conducted in gymnastics clubs with 92 female gymnasts (39 artistic, 53 rhythmic), aged 7-24 years. Since the data were not normally distributed, the Mann-Whitney U-test was used. Artistic gymnasts had a significantly higher injury

Spinal cord infarction in children: Can gymnastics be a cause?

INTRODUCTION: Spinal cord infarction (SCI) in children is rare and difficult to diagnose. Fibrocartilaginous embolism (FCE) is probably the underlying cause for some unexplained cases of spinal cord infarcts. Abrupt back pain followed by a progressive syndrome of myelopathy appears to be the typical presentation, with a close temporal relationship between the onset of symptoms and preceding minor trauma. Supportive care and rehabilitation are essential in the treatment of children with SCI. CASE REPORT: A previously healthy 12-year-old girl who practiced acrobatic gymnastics was admitted to a

Skill progression pathways and head kinematics in men's artistic gymnastics.

This study aimed to evaluate head kinematics during skills performed within common skill progression pathways in men's artistic gymnastics. Eight men's artistic gymnasts (ages 11-18) wore mouthpieces with triaxial accelerometers and gyroscopes and performed skills from seven skill progression pathways: backward and forward tumbling on the floor, bar/ring elements, releases, dismounts, Tsukahara vaults, and Yurchenko vaults. Data were recorded at 100 Hz for 10-min periods and were time-synchronized with video footage. Peak linear acceleration (PLA), peak rotational acceleration (PRA), resultant

Factors Associated With Achilles Tendon Rupture in Women's Collegiate Gymnastics.

BACKGROUND: Achilles injury risk in women's collegiate gymnastics is 10-fold higher than in all other collegiate sports. This study aims to identify risk factors for Achilles tendon ruptures in collegiate female gymnasts. HYPOTHESIS: Gymnasts with Achilles tendon ruptures will be more likely to report early gymnastics specialization, elite-level training before college, and performance of high-difficulty skills on floor and vault. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 4. METHODS: Anonymous surveys were distributed to current and former collegiate female gymnasts, ag

The gymnast's shoulder MRI and clinical findings.

AIM: The aim of the study was to evaluate effects of shoulder overuse in elite symptomatic or asymptomatic gymnasts. METHODS: This was a university-based sport traumatology research, a cohort study, with a control group comparison. Patients included were: 21 elite male gymnasts performing in the Italian National team for at least 10 years and a control group of 10 patients (20 shoulders) of the same age and sex, randomly selected among a healthy non-athletic population who underwent shoulder MRI. Magnetic resonance imaging without contrast were performed to all participants and clinical findi

Grip lock injury in male gymnasts.

BACKGROUND: Grip lock is a high bar injury in male gymnastics and occurs while the gymnast is rotating around the high bar. Its mechanism and treatment have been poorly documented. STUDY DESIGN: Case reports. RESULTS: One gymnast sustained an extensor tendon injury and ulnar styloid fracture and was treated nonoperatively. The second gymnast sustained open fracture of the radius and ulna with extensor tendon ruptures and was surgically treated. Both gymnasts healed and were able to return to collegiate gymnastics despite residual finger extensor lag. CONCLUSIONS: Grip lock is a physically a

Hypoleptinemia in female and male elite gymnasts.

BACKGROUND: Elite gymnasts favour low body fat mass as the current aesthetic ideal required for complex movements in this sports discipline. Pubertal development and growth are retarded in juvenile gymnasts. Leptin, the protein product of the ob-gene, is secreted by fat cells. Besides its role in regulation of body weight, leptin also stimulates the reproductive axis. We investigated various serum hormones including leptin, body composition and nutrition in cohorts of female and male elite gymnasts to elucidate if there is a relationship between leptin levels and delayed puberty in elite gymna

Acquired Madelung-like deformity in a gymnast.

High-level gymnastic training may cause clinical and radiographic changes in the wrist. A case is reported demonstrating bilateral closure of the ulnar side of the distal radius epiphyseal plate in a patient with a history of high-level gymnastic training. Cumulative microtrauma to the ulnar side of the distal radius epiphyseal plate may cause premature closure leading to a Madelung-like deformity.

[The spine--a problem area in high performance artistic gymnastics. A retrospective analysis of 24 former artistic gymnasts of the German A team].

24 former female artistic gymnasts of the German national team were examined for spinal deformities after the end of their athletic career. In 3 cases we found osseous lesions of the spine without neurological complications. However, emphasis was on spinal changes due to stress. During their athletic career 15 gymnasts complained of low back pain which persisted in 7 of them after finishing their athletic activities. The lumbar radiographs revealed bilateral spondylolysis at L5 in 6, unilateral spondylolysis in 1, spondylolisthesis at L5/S1 in 3, degenerative changes of the intervertebral join

Stress Fracture and Nonunion of Coronoid Process in a Gymnast.

Background. Gymnasts have high mechanical loading forces of up to 14 times body weight. Overuse lesions are typical in wrists and stress fractures in the olecranon, while isolated fractures of the coronoid process are uncommon. We present a case of retraumatized nonunion stress fracture of the ulnar coronoid process. Case Description. A 19-year-old gymnast presented with elbow pain after training. Imaging confirmed an old fracture of the coronoid process. We describe a 6-month multiphase return to competition rehabilitation program, which allowed him to compete pain-freely. Literature Review.
