The frequencies of human leukocyte antigens--HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-C, HLA-DR, and HLA-DQ1--were determined in a group of 40 white British patients with oral lichen planus and compared with those of healthy controls. Alterations in the frequencies of several HLA antigens were noted. In particular, an increase in HLA-Bw57 and a decrease in the frequency of HLA-DQ1 were seen in the group with lichen planus. 20 patients of schistosomal hepatic fibrosis and splenomegaly (SHF) with and without haematemesis were examined. Typing for HLA-A, B and C antigens in these patients were compared with those of a group of 100 Egyptian controls. On a group of 40 paranoid schizophrenic patients HLA serotypes for HLA--A, B, C antigens a significant increase of Cw4 was observed. It is argued that this finding represents the common denominator for previous data reporting increased A9 and A28 antigen in SCH because these antigens are frequently present on haplotypes bearing Cw4. The possible role of the HLA "central" parts, i.e. the chromosomal segment between HLA--A and HLA--B locus in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia was stressed.

We describe two children who had Fisher syndrome subsequent to Campylobacter jejuni enteritis. The C. jejuni isolates from both patients, who lived in different areas, belonged to PEN 2: LIO 4. One patient had the following human leukocyte antigens (HLAs): HLA-A24, 33; B44, 52; DQ1; and DR2, 6 antigens. Another had the HLA-A24, 33; B44, 54; Cw1; DQ1, 4; and DR4, 6. An effort should be made to isolate C. jejuni from patients with Fisher syndrome and to perform HLA typing so that the pathogenesis of this syndrome can be clarified.
