Sensitization of the Tritonia escape swim.

When repeatedly elicited, the oscillatory escape swim of the marine mollusc Tritonia diomedea undergoes habituation of the number of cycles per swim. Previous work has shown that this habituation is accompanied by sensitization of another feature of the behavior: latency to swim onset. Here we focused on the behavioral features of sensitization itself. Test swims elicited 5 min after a strong sensitizing head stimulus differed in several ways from control swims: sensitized animals had shorter latencies for gill and rhinophore withdrawal, a shorter latency for swim onset, a lower threshold for

A partial habituation method to test for anterograde and retrograde amnestic treatment effects: Evidence that antagonism of the NMDA receptor can induce anterograde but not retrograde amnestic effects.

BACKGROUND: A progressive decrease in spontaneous locomotion with repeated exposure to a novel environment has been assessed using both within and between-session measures. While both are well-established and reliable measurements, neither are useful alone as methods to concurrently assess treatment effects on acquisition and retention of habituation. NEW METHOD: We report a behavioral method that measures habituation by combining the within and between measurements of locomotion. We used a 30 min session divided into 6 five min blocks. In the first novel environment session activity was maxi

Exploration of cortical inhibition and habituation in insomnia: Based on CNV and EEG.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive dysfunction with abnormal cortical inhibition and habituation has frequently been found in patients with insomnia. And the so-called contingent negative variation (CNV) and EEG power spectral density (FFT) may be the best choice to explore the underlining pathophysiology. METHODS: We used polysomnography (PSG) to record such objective PSG parameters. The amplitudes, latencies, areas of different CNV components such as oCNV, iCNV and tCNV, PINV have been selected and analyzed. Behavioral data such as manual reaction time (RT) has been analyzed. Spectral analysis was perfor

Habituation Alteration in Infants with Periventricular Echogenicity as an Indicator of Neurocognitive Impairment.

Habituation difficulties may suggest neurocognitive impairment. Periventricular echogenicity (PVE) potentially causes subtle damage that poses neuropsychological risk. Habituation was evaluated through heart rate and behavioral states in infants at 36-37 weeks of corrected age between control and PVE groups. PVE infants showed early alertness and abrupt changes in behavioral states. However, the comparison group could better regulate their states. Heart rate was significantly high and remained unchanged in the PVE group but decreased in the control group. Alterations during the habituation par

Hippocampus as comparator: role of the two input and two output systems of the hippocampus in selection and registration of information.

Processing of multimodal sensory information by the morphological subdivisions of the hippocampus and its input and output structures was investigated in unanesthetized rabbits by extracellular recording of neuronal activity. Analysis shows principal differences between CA3 neurons with uniform multimodal, mainly inhibitory, rapidly habituating sensory responses, and CA1-subicular neurons, substantial parts of which have phasic reactions and patterned on-responses, depending on the characteristics of the stimuli. These differences result from the organization of the afferent inputs to CA1 and

The influence of olfaction on exploratory behaviour in the paradise fish (Macropodus opercularis L.).

We studied the role of olfaction on the exploratory behaviour of the paradise fish. Intact animals showed habituation of exploratory behaviour toward a heterospecific fish after five consecutive encounters. Fish with olfactory nerves destroyed spent significantly longer time with exploration compared to the control even at the fifth encounter. We suggest that olfactory inputs have a strong influence on exploratory behaviour.

Persistence of habituation deficits after neurological recovery from severe thiamine deprivation.

Rats were fed a thiamine-deficient diet for 4 weeks and injected daily with pyrithiamine during the last two weeks of the diet. This regime induced severe neurological anomalies such as ataxia, loss of righting reflex and visual place reflex, and finally full tonic-clonic seizures. These symptoms are reminiscent of the clinical Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. Injection of thiamine dramatically reversed these symptoms within one or two hours as seen in Wernicke patients. Six weeks later these rats showed a marked deficit in habituation of exploratory behavior and of the auditory orienting response

Constant bright light (LL) during lactation in rats prevents arrhythmicity due to LL.

Light has a strong effect on the circadian system. Light-dark (LD) cycles are the main zeitgebers for practically all organisms, and the exposure of animals to constant bright light (LL) alters the manifestation of circadian rhythms. In rats, exposure to LL in adulthood produces an arrhythmic pattern in their motor activity, with a large number of ultradian components. In previous experiments, we found that rats born and kept under LL during lactation develop, after weaning, a circadian rhythm which is maintained for at least a couple of months. Here, we examined motor activity rhythms under L

Elicitation and habituation of the electrodermal activity responses: Implications for neurophysiological applications.

Electrodermal activity (EDA) serves as a reliable indicator of sympathetic activation for the measurement of emotional arousal. Despite extensive use of EDA in psychophysiological and neurophysiological research, little is known about how repeated stimulus presentation influences EDA responses, particularly when more than one parameter is measured simultaneously. This study examined the influence of repeated stimulus presentation on three EDA parameters (SCRs, SPRs, and SSRs). A total of sixty healthy subjects participated in the study. They were exposed to four external stimuli: sound, image,

The impact of between-session habituation, within-session habituation, and weight gain on response to food exposure for adolescents with eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Exposure therapy is a promising treatment for eating disorders (EDs). However, questions remain about the effectiveness of exposure to feared foods during the weight restoration phase of treatment, and the importance of between-session and within-session habituation. METHOD: We recruited 54 adolescents from a partial hospitalization program (PHP) for EDs which included daily food exposure. Throughout treatment, participants provided subjective units of distress (SUDS) ratings before and after eating a feared food, and completed measures of ED symptomatology. RESULTS: Multilevel mo

Habituation is altered in neuropsychiatric disorders-A comprehensive review with recommendations for experimental design and analysis.

Abnormalities in the simplest form of learning, habituation, have been reported in a variety of neuropsychiatric disorders as etiologically diverse as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Fragile X syndrome, Schizophrenia, Parkinson's Disease, Huntington's Disease, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Tourette's Syndrome, and Migraine. Here we provide the first comprehensive review of what is known about alterations in this form of non-associative learning in each disorder. Across several disorders, abnormal habituation is predictive of symptom severity, highlighting the clinical significance of hab

Multiple channel exposure therapy: combining cognitive-behavioral therapies for the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder with panic attacks.

A large proportion of patients who present for treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) experience comorbid panic attacks, yet it is unclear to what extent currently available PTSD treatment programs address this problem. Here we describe a newly developed treatment, multiple-channel exposure therapy (M-CET), for comorbid PTSD and panic attacks. The treatment utilizes elements of cognitive processing therapy treatment for PTSD and elements of panic control treatment to target physiological, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms. Preliminary results suggest that M-CET may provide a promis

Change in susceptibility to vestibular-visual conflict sickness in monkeys by repeated exposure.

Squirrel monkeys, susceptible to the vestibular-visual conflict sickness in pitch (with frank vomiting), were subjected to repeated exposure to pitch conflict in various modes and in a randomly mixed order (30 min daily, for 10 consecutive days). Immediately after the training, a significant decline in susceptibility was found, represented by reduced vomiting rates, reduced sickness scores, reduced salivation and improved regularity of vertical oculomotor responses. Susceptibility at the pre-training level returned when the test was repeated 10 days later. Temporary suppression of pitch confli

Treatment of an obsessional patient using habituation to audiotaped ruminations.

A single case where persistent and pervasive ruminations were treated by intensive audiotaped exposure to the ruminations themselves is reported. Exposure at two levels produced significant effects in an interrupted time series analysis of daily frequency, and the patient was rumination free at the end of treatment and at 6 months follow-up.

Reversed postoptokinetic nystagmus: a model of plasticity in the vestibuloocular system.

A simple manifestation of the memorial processes is the so called reversed postoptokinetic nystagmus (RPN), a trace phenomenon elicited in the rabbit by prolonged (60 min) optokinetic (OK) stimulation. Electrophysiological analysis of RPN indicated that the underlying neural trace is weakened, but not suppressed by spreading depression in the cerebral cortex or superior colliculus. An asymmetry of RPN is brought about by unilateral 6-OHDA lesion on substantia nigra. Electroconvulsive shock applied immediately after a period of OK stimulation blocks the subsequent RPN without interfering with O

Revealing the time course of laser-evoked potential habituation by high temporal resolution analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Reduced laser-evoked potential (LEP) habituation indicates abnormal central pain processing. But the paradigm (four stimulation blocks a 25 stimuli) is time consuming and potentially omits important information on the exact habituation time course. This study examined whether a high temporal resolution (HTR) analysis (dividing the four stimulation blocks into 12 analysis blocks) can answer the following questions: (a) After how many stimuli does LEP habituation occur? (b) Is there a difference in LEP habituation in younger versus older subjects? (c) Is HTR applicable

Microsaccades inhibition triggered by a repetitive visual distractor is not subject to habituation: Implications for the programming of reflexive saccades.

The oculomotor capture triggered by a peripheral onset is subject to habituation, a basic form of learning consisting in a response decrement toward a repeatedly presented stimulus. However, it is unclear whether habituation of reflexive saccades takes place at the saccadic programming or execution stage (or both). To address this issue, we exploited the fact that during fixation the programming of a reflexive saccade exerts a robust but short-lasting phasic inhibition in the absolute microsaccadic frequency. Hence, if habituation of reflexive saccades occurs at the programming stage, then thi
