Haemophilus paraphrophilus infection: a pitfall in laboratory diagnosis.

Many clinical laboratories have difficulty in identifying a group of organisms which are catalase negative, oxidase positive, Gram negative rods. We describe a case of purulent sacroiliitis due to Haemophilus paraphrophilus where the organism was initially misidentified as Eikenella corrodens leading to inappropriate antimicrobial chemotherapy. We review the strains of H. paraphrophilus and E. corrodens that were identified by the National Collection of Type Cultures over the last ten years. Only 21 of 100 strains identified as E. corrodens were submitted as E. corrodens. Seven strains submitt

Pathophysiological concept of Haemophilus ducreyi infection (chancroid).

Our knowledge concerning the pathogenesis of infection due to Haemophilus ducreyi is incomplete. In order to produce disease, H. ducreyi must presumably penetrate the skin of the external genitalia, colonize subcutaneous tissues, then produce tissue damage which results in ulcer formation. Penetration of the normal skin most likely occurs via minor abrasions. Adherence of H. ducreyi to different cell lines in vitro has been described, and might be mediated by adhesions such as pili or haemagglutinins. In addition, binding to extracellular matrix proteins has also been reported. Extracellular t

[Haemophilus infection in nonspecific inflammatory lung diseases].

Hemophilic infection incidence rate, characteristics and criteria of early detection were studied in 393 patients with nonspecific pulmonary diseases. H. influenzae represented the prevalent pathogenic agent in 17% of the cases: in 11% of acute pneumonias (276 patients) and 30% of chronic bronchitis exacerbations (117 patients). Hemophilic pneumonias were a more frequent finding in patients over 40 years of age, proved secondary, manifested usually interstitial inflammation of the lung tissue, were prone to interlobitis complication and protracted course. Purulent endobronchial inflammation us

Cefotaxime treatment of Haemophilus ducreyi infection in Kenya.

The authors conducted a double-blind randomized clinical trial comparing single-dose cefotaxime (1 g im) plus daily placebo injections with cefotaxime (1 g im on each of three days). Each regimen was given with probenicid (1 g orally) for the treatment of chancroid. Twenty Haemophilus ducreyi culture-positive men received the single-dose cefotaxime regimen; in eight patients ulcers or buboes failed to respond to therapy. Nineteen H. ducreyi culture-positive men received cefotaxime on each of three days; H. ducreyi was eradicated from all patients, but one had a continuing ulcer and another had

Invasive Haemophilus influenzae Infection in Patients With Cancer.

A major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with cancer is infection. Since the introduction of the Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine in the United States in the 1990s, invasive H influenzae infection has become less common. We report on 5 patients with cancer and invasive H influenzae infection. A literature review was also performed of the dominant Haemophilus subtype and the clinical features associated with the infection and concomitant cancer. Of the 17 cases found in the literature, had hematological malignancies and 1 case each had thymoma, schwannoma, teratoma, and p

Miller Fisher syndrome and Haemophilus influenzae infection.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS) and antecedent Haemophilus influenzae infection. BACKGROUND: Little is known about agents in prior respiratory tract infection of MFS, whereas antecedent upper respiratory symptoms are frequent. H. influenzae is a major pathogen that can cause human respiratory tract infection. METHODS: The authors used ELISA to detect serum antibody against the bacterium in 70 consecutive patients with MFS and 110 with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). RESULTS: Serum anti-H. influenzae IgG and IgM antibody activities were significantly

[Clinical results of a multicenter study of Haemophilus infection].

2379 cases of infections due to Haemophilus are reported in a one year long French multicenter study. There were 1368 low respiratory and 540 high respiratory infections, 22 epiglottitis, 86 meningitis, and 68 septicemia (bacteremia). Four hundred and one times, we considered that the bacteria was not the cause of the infection. For each type of infection, we studied the distribution according to the age, the sex and the period of the year, the eventual associations and the involved serotypes. The lethality was low (22), mainly due to a particular deficiency. At last, we compared the different

Immunoglobulin deficiency in patients with Streptococcus pneumoniae or Haemophilus influenzae invasive infections.

OBJECTIVES: Immunoglobulin (Ig) deficiency is a well-known risk factor for Streptococcus pneumoniae or Haemophilus influenzae infections and noteworthy invasive diseases. However, the proportion of these deficiencies in cases of invasive disease is unknown. The objective of this study was to evaluate the rate of Ig deficiency in cases of invasive disease. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted from January 2008 to October 2010 in two French hospitals. Measurement of Ig levels was carried out in patients hospitalized for invasive diseases. RESULTS: A total of 119 patients were enrolled in

Decline of bone and joint infections attributable to haemophilus influenzae type b.

Haemophilus influenzae has been a major cause of infectious diseases in children and has been attributed as a significant cause of septic arthritis and osteomyelitis in children. With the advent of widespread vaccination, the incidence of Haemophilus influenzae meningitis and other infections has been well documented. This is thought to be the first report that documents the effect of vaccination on bone and joint infections. One hundred sixty-five cases of acute hematogenous osteomyelitis or septic arthritis treated at the Department of Orthopaedics at Vanderbilt University in the years befor

[Type B Haemophilus influenzae infections. Experience at the Pediatric Hospital of Luxembourg].

We have made a retrospective study of invasive Hib infections which have occurred in the Children's Hospital since 1980 to the end of July 1994; and we have been able to notice that since the introduction of vaccination against Hib, especially since it is free, the incidence of invasive Hib infections in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is in great decline.

[Haemophilus influenzae infections in 2 hospitals in the city of Puebla, Mexico].

Haemophilus influenzae has been recognized as one of the most important pathogen in the pediatric population younger than 5 years old. We analized some characteristics of the infectious diseases by Haemophilus influenzae in the pediatric group from 1985 to 1990 in two hospitals of Puebla city. From 321 children studies cases included for this work, fifty of those had infectious diseases by H. influenzae. Forty six percent of the patients developed meningitis, 22% otitis media, 12% sepsis, 10% pneumonia and 10% other infectious diseases. The majority of cases occurred in males but the differenc

Prevention of Haemophilus influenzae type b infections in Apache and Navajo children.

Prospective surveillance of Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) disease has been done since 1981 in two high-risk populations, White Mountain Apaches and Navajos. The attack rate in children less than 5 years of age is 5-10 times higher than in the general US population. Three vaccines were evaluated. Unconjugated Hib capsular polysaccharide produced lower antibody responses in 18- and 24-month-old Apache infants than in white infants. HbOC (Hib oligosaccharide covalently linked to the nontoxic mutant diphtheria toxin CRM197) produced low antibody responses in Navajo infants after one or two d

Meningitis and epiglottitis: a new immunisation against haemophilus influenzae type b infections.

Since 1985 the number of cases of systemic haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) disease in children in the Oxford region has been recorded. This study shows that a cumulative incidence of children suffering systematic Hib infections before their fifth birthday is 1:600, 71 per cent of sufferers having meningitis. Because the incidence of haemophilus infections may be increasing in the UK and there is increasing resistance of the organism to antimicrobial therapy, the need for primary prevention through immunisation is becoming increasingly attractive. We have therefore undertaken a safety and i

Invasive serotype a Haemophilus influenzae infections with a virulence genotype resembling Haemophilus influenzae type b: emerging pathogen in the vaccine era?

OBJECTIVE: Haemophilus influenzae type b causes severe disease in nonimmune infants and young children; other serotypes are uncommon pathogens and thought to have low virulence. Some have hypothesized that with the virtual elimination of H influenzae type b, other serotypes might acquire virulence traits and emerge as important pathogens of children. We describe the clinical, epidemiologic, and molecular biologic features of 5 cases of severe disease attributable to Haemophilus influenzae type a. METHODS: After observing 4 cases of invasive disease caused by H influenzae type a, we reviewed m

A Series of Haemophilus parainfluenzae Surgical Infections and Review of the Literature.

Background: Haemophilus parainfluenzae (HPI) is a rare and underreported pathogen. Haemophilus parainfluenzae causes respiratory, soft tissue, and central nervous system (CNS) infections, and endocarditis. Little data on HPI surgical infections are available, especially for intra-abdominal infections (IAI). Patients and Methods: Haemophilus parainfluenzae isolates were recovered from patients treated at a rural hospital during a two-year period. Isolation and identification of the pathogen was done according to standard guidelines. A literature review with regard to HPI IAI was done. Results:

The other siblings: respiratory infections caused by Moraxella catarrhalis and Haemophilus influenzae.

Respiratory infections remain substantial causes of morbidity and mortality globally. In this paper, two substantial players in bacterial-associated respiratory disease are assessed as to their respective roles in children and adults and in the developed and developing world. Moraxella catarrhalis, although initially thought to be a nonpathogen, continues to emerge as a cause of upper respiratory disease in children and pneumonia in adults. No vaccine is currently available to prevent M. catarrhalis infection. Haemophilus influenzae type b, originally thought to be the cause of influenza, has
