Immune response of tonsillar lymphocytes to Haemophilus parainfluenzae in patients with IgA nephropathy.

The pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is unclear. We have previously shown glomerular deposition of Haemophilus parainfluenzae (HPI) antigens and the presence of IgA antibody against HPI antigens in patients with IgAN. We examined the immune response to HPI antigens in tonsillar lymphocytes from patients with IgAN. Lymphocytes isolated from the palatine tonsils of 13 IgAN patients and 16 patients with chronic tonsillitis but without renal disease were used as controls. We examined lymphocyte proliferation and production of IgA antibody against HPI antigens by measuring thymidine uptake an

Haemophilus parainfluenzae as a rare cause of epidural abscess: case report and review.

We report a case of epidural abscess due to Haemophilus parainfluenzae. This microorganism is a normal inhabitant of the upper respiratory tract that causes endocarditis and, rarely, other invasive infections. To the best of our knowledge, epidural abscess due to H. parainfluenzae has not been reported previously. A 74-year-old man presented with neck pain and subsequently developed incomplete quadriparesis. A cervical epidural abscess and vertebral osteomyelitis were detected by radiologic studies. Surgical drainage and antibiotic therapy resulted in resolution of the abscess and osteomyeliti

Haemophilus parainfluenzae as a Causative Organism in Periprosthetic Joint Infection: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Haemophilus parainfluenzae (H. parainfluenzae) is rare in periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs). While many cases are associated with a prior history suggestive of an oral source, many occur without an identifiable source or exposure. We review two patients who had concerns for PJI, later identified as H. parainfluenzae through intraoperative cultures. CASE REPORT: Two patients presented with complaints of knee pain. The first, a 54-year-old male, was found on admission to have a knee PJI. The patient underwent debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention (DAIR) and was discha

Uncommon presentation of Haemophilus parainfluenzae bacteremia: A case study on aortic valve endocarditis.

Haemophilus parainfluenzae, a HACEK organism, is one of five species known to less commonly cause infective endocarditis. This article presents a rare and noteworthy case of H. parainfluenzae endocarditis affecting the aortic valve, seemingly unique when Haemophilus species in endocarditis were previously known to more commonly involve the pulmonic or mitral valves. In the setting of H. parainfluenzae bacteremia, a 61-year-old male with no significant past medical history exhibited subtle systemic symptoms with a paucity of clinical signs associated with endocarditis and no evidence of embolic

Pyelonephritis and bacteremia caused by Haemophilus parainfluenzae: case-report of an unusual pathogen.

We present a case of a young man with known urinary tract abnormalities who developed pyelonephritis and bacteremia caused by Haemophilus parainfluenzae. Since routine urine culture usually does not include enriched media for Haemophilus spp., the true incidence of urinary tract infections caused by H. parainfluenzae is currently unknown. Our case, however, demonstrates that H. parainfluenzae is a potential urinary pathogen, at least in patients with urinary tract anomalies. Clinical laboratories should consider expanding their culture efforts to detect unusual pathogens in patients with under

The Italian Epidemiological Survey 1997-1999. Antimicrobial susceptibility data of Haemophilus influenzae, Haemophilus parainfluenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis in Italy.

The Italian Epidemiological Survey began a surveillance study with the aim of monitoring the antimicrobial resistance of respiratory pathogens. From 1997 to 1999, 2028 strains of Haemophilus influenzae and 523 strains of Haemophilus parainfluenzae were collected from 59 Clinical Microbiology Laboratories distributed throughout Italy. In 1998, the study was extended to include Moraxella catarrhalis and a total of 360 isolates were collected. There was a significant increase in the beta-lactamase production both for H. influenzae (from 5% in 1997 to 16% in 1999) and for H. parainfluenzae (from 5

Changes in the prevalence and biofilm formation of Haemophilus influenzae and Haemophilus parainfluenzae from the respiratory microbiota of patients with sarcoidosis.

BACKGROUND: Healthy condition and chronic diseases may be associated with microbiota composition and its properties. The prevalence of respiratory haemophili with respect to their phenotypes including the ability to biofilm formation in patients with sarcoidosis was assayed. METHODS: Nasopharynx and sputum specimens were taken in 31 patients with sarcoidosis (average age 42.6 ± 13), and nasopharynx specimens were taken in 37 healthy people (average age 44.6 ± 11.6). Haemophili were identified by API-NH microtest and by the matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectr

Detection of CTX-M-15 ESBL in XDR Haemophilus parainfluenzae from a urethral swab.

OBJECTIVES: Haemophilus parainfluenzae is an opportunistic pathogen causing respiratory tract infection and sexually transmitted diseases. The emergence of multidrug resistance in this species is particularly worrisome, especially since the recent description of CTX-M-15 ESBL-producing isolates in Spain. The aim of this study was to characterize a CTX-M-15-producing H. parainfluenzae clinical isolate, HP01, obtained from a urethral swab. METHODS: MICs were determined with gradient strips for this isolate. Hydrolysis assays were performed with the β LACTA test. Genomic DNA from HP01 was subjec

Haemophilus parainfluenzae antigen and antibody in children with IgA nephropathy and Henoch-Schönlein nephritis.

Although the pathogenesis of immunoglobulin A (IgA) nephropathy and Henoch-Schönlein nephritis (HSN) remains uncertain, there is substantial evidence that they are immune complex-mediated diseases. Recently, Haemophilus parainfluenzae antigens were shown in the glomerular mesangium of adult patients with IgA nephropathy, and greater levels of IgA antibody against H parainfluenzae were also shown in the sera of adult patients with IgA nephropathy. The present study was performed to detect H parainfluenzae antigens and antibody against H parainfluenzae in children with IgA nephropathy and HSN. H

"Emergence of a CTX-M-15-producing multidrug-resistance Haemophilus parainfluenzae in Southern Spain".

Urogenital infections caused by Haemophilus parainfluenzae are becoming an emerging health problem. This, along with the increase in strains resistant to current antibiotic treatments, is making it difficult to control these infections. Therefore, it is important to monitor the emergence and spread of these strains, as well as their resistance to antibiotics. Our study describes a new urethral isolate of MDR with ESBLs from a hospital in southern Spain. Whole-genome sequencing has determined the production of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (CTX-M), as well as the presence of other resistance

Rice body formation due to Haemophilus parainfluenza-associated chronic arthropathy.

A 68-year-old woman with a medical history significant for psoriatic arthritis was found to have an enlarged, painful lump on her left hip 15 months after intramedullary rod placement for a left subtrochanteric femur fracture sustained in a fall. Histopathological findings showed rice body formation (RBF) with concurrent H. parainfluenza. RBF is a relatively rare arthropathy of a subset of chronic inflammatory disease such as rheumatoid arthritis or tuberculous arthropathy. RBF associated with psoriatic arthritis or orthopedic hardware placement has been reported in a handful of cases in the l

Epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance trends in Haemophilus parainfluenzae in a tertiary care hospital (2018-2022).

UNLABELLED: Haemophilus parainfluenzae is increasingly recognized as a reservoir of antimicrobial resistance in urogenital infections. We conducted a retrospective laboratory-based study including all H. parainfluenzae isolates collected at a tertiary hospital in Barcelona between 2018 and 2022. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed for all isolates, and whole-genome sequencing was conducted for multidrug-resistant (MDR) and capsulated strains. A total of 529 isolates from 504 individuals were analyzed (258 respiratory, 223 urogenital, and 48 other sources). Overall, 85/529 (16.1%

Emergence of multidrug resistance among Haemophilus parainfluenzae from respiratory and urogenital samples in Barcelona, Spain.

Haemophilus parainfluenzae (HPAR) is a Gram-negative bacterium that can become an opportunistic urogenital pathogen. Recently, multidrug resistant (MDR) strains have emerged. We aim to analyse the epidemiology of HPAR at Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge between 2013 and 2017 to determine its putative role in sexually transmitted infections (STI). Strains were classified by sample origin, and antimicrobial susceptibility was performed by disk-diffusion tested on Mueller-Hinton Fastidious. MDR was defined as the resistance of the antimicrobial to three or more antibiotic class. Molecular typin

Acute septic arthritis of the acromioclavicular joint caused by Haemophilus parainfluenzae: a rare causative origin.

Septic arthritis of the acromioclavicular (AC) joint is a rare entity with symptoms that include erythema, swelling, and tenderness over the AC joint, fever, and limitation of shoulder motion with pain. In previous reports, Staphylococcus and Streptococcus species have been mentioned as common causative organisms. Haemophilus parainfluenzae is a normal inhabitant of the oral cavity, respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, and urogenital tract. However, it sometimes causes opportunistic infections leading to septic arthritis and osteomyelitis. AC joint infection associated with H.parainfluen

Bone and Joint Infections due to Haemophilus parainfluenzae: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Haemophilus parainfluenzae is a normal inhabitant of the human respiratory tract. However it is an increasingly recognized pathogen in invasive infections, particularly in the immunocompromised host and where there is disruption of the normal skin or mucosal barriers. We present a case of a 56-year-old female with a history of asplenia who developed H. parainfluenzae septic arthritis of the hip following an intra-articular steroid injection. We also summarize previously reported cases of bone and joint infections caused by H. parainfluenzae.
