Haemosporidians are vector-borne parasites that infect vertebrates and are commonly detected in captive birds, causing infections ranging from mild to severe and may be fatal, especially those involving Plasmodium and Haemoproteus species. Blood samples from 17 Anseriformes, including 15 captive Ruddy Shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea) and two black-necked swans (Cygnus melancoryphus), were analyzed in this study. An integrative approach identified Haemoproteus infection in one female of each species, with genetic sequences showing 100% similarity to Haemoproteus macrovacuolatus, based on a 478 bp

Avian haemosporidian parasites of the genus Haemoproteus (Haemoproteidae, Haemosporida) are widespread, and some species cause diseases both in vertebrate hosts and blood-sucking insects. Parasitemia of Haemoproteus species usually is long-lasting, with gametocytes present in the circulation for several months. However, the viability of gametocytes and their ability to produce sexual cells have been insufficiently understood in the course of parasitemia. We initiated the sexual development in vitro conditions and calculated proportions of normal and anomalous ookinetes, which developed in two

Avian haemosporidians (order Haemosporida), including the genera Plasmodium and Haemoproteus, are widespread vector-borne parasites that infect a broad range of bird species and can adversely affect host fitness, survival, and population dynamics. Although the Neotropics harbor a high diversity of avian hemoparasites, molecular studies in Colombia remain scarce, particularly in highly threatened ecosystems such as tropical dry forests. This study aimed to evaluate the presence and diversity of avian hemoparasites in birds inhabiting an urban fragment of tropical dry forest in northern Colombia

Haemoproteus bobricklefsi sp. nov. (Haemosporida, Haemoproteidae) was found in the dunnock Prunella modularis and represents the first blood parasite described in accentor birds of the Prunellidae. The description is based on the morphology of blood stages and includes information about a barcoding segment of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (lineage hDUNNO01) and the full mitochondrial genome, which can be used for identification and diagnosis of this infection. The new parasite can be readily distinguished from described species of haemoproteids parasitizing passeriform birds due to marke

Anopheles stephensi Liston, 1901 (Diptera: culicidae) is a competent vector of Plasmodium falciparum (Haemosporida: plasmodiidae) malaria, and its expansion in the African continent is of concern due to its viability in urban settings and resistance to insecticides. To enhance its genetic tractability, we determined the utility of a ~2 kb An. stephensi lipophorin (lp) promoter fragment in driving transgene expression. Lipophorin genes are involved in lipid transport in insects, and an orthologous promoter in An. gambiae (AGAP001826) was previously demonstrated to successfully express a transge

BACKGROUND: Land-use change can influence parasite transmission by reshaping ecological interactions among parasites, vectors, and hosts. In particular, deforestation and agricultural expansion modify habitat structure and resource availability, potentially altering the prevalence and distribution of vector-borne diseases.
METHODS: Fieldwork was conducted on São Tomé Island (Gulf of Guinea, Central Africa) across a land-use gradient from the core of an oil palm plantation to adjacent native forest. Culicoides biting midges and birds were sampled across four habitat types (village, oil palm pl

Genetic diversity is essential for the adaptive potential of species, particularly in the context of parasitic infections, which exert strong selective pressures on host populations. While reduced genetic diversity is often linked to increased susceptibility to infection, the extent to which this applies across different genetic markers and ecological contexts remains unclear. In this meta-analysis, we synthesized data from 35 studies encompassing 27 bird species and 85 effect sizes to examine the relationship between individual genetic diversity and avian malaria infections caused by Plasmodi

Birds possess the most diverse assemblage of haemosporidian parasites, although the true diversity is unknown due to high genetic diversity and insufficient sampling across all avian clades. Waterfowl (Order Anseriformes) are an ideal group to discover hidden parasite diversity and examine the role of host ecology in parasite transmission. Waterfowl contain 2 distinct feeding guilds, dabbling and diving, which differ in niche utilization that likely alters vector encounter rates and haemosporidian parasite risk. To determine the role of feeding guild in haemosporidian parasitism we analysed 22

Environmental characteristics drastically shape the host-parasite associations under natural conditions. This is the case of parasites such as avian haemosporidians which naturally infect birds and are transmitted by insect vectors. Landscape characteristics are known to determine the epidemiology of transmission of these parasites in the wild, but the strength of these factors may differ at different spatial scales. We studied the effects of the landscape structure and environmental variables on the prevalence and richness of lineages of avian haemosporidian parasites (genera Plasmodium, Haem

Research on the feeding preference of mosquitoes and the malaria parasites they transmit to vertebrate hosts is crucial for understanding the host-vector-parasite relationships in this complex system. In order to contribute to the growing data on these associations, and focusing on avian malaria, we collected mosquitoes at regular intervals between April and October for 2 years (2017 and 2019) in a deciduous forest and reedbeds. Collected engorged mosquitoes were identified morphologically. Total DNA was extracted from the abdomen and head-thorax parts of the vectors and was used to identify b

Migratory animals likely play an important role in the geographic spread of parasites. In fact, a common assumption is that parasites are potentially transmitted by migratory animals at temporary stopover sites along migratory routes, yet very few studies have assessed whether transmission at stopover sites can or does occur. We investigated the potential for a group of vector-transmitted parasites, the avian haemosporidians, to be transmitted during migratory stopover periods at Rushton Woods Preserve in Pennsylvania, USA. Using an analysis of 1454 sampled avian hosts, we found that while a c

Bendamustine is among the most effective chemotherapeutics for indolent B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas (iNHL), but trial reports of significant toxicity, including opportunistic infections and excess deaths, led to prescriber warnings. We conducted a multicenter observational study evaluating bendamustine toxicity in real-world practice. Patients receiving at least 1 dose of bendamustine with/without rituximab (R) for iNHL were included. Demographics, lymphoma and treatment details, and grade 3 to 5 adverse events (AEs) were analyzed and correlated. In total, 323 patients were enrolled from 9 Na

A 1-year-old major Mitchell's cockatoo (Lophochroa leadbeateri) was presented for evaluation of weakness, diarrhea with undigested seeds in the droppings, and weight loss. Leukocytosis with severe heterophilia, monocytosis, and lymphocytosis was noted on the complete blood count. Altered plasma biochemical parameters included a slight increase in creatine kinase and mild hypoproteinemia. Two blood smears before and after 2 days of treatment revealed mild polychromasia and anisocytosis but no blood parasites. Radiographic and computed tomographic imaging of the cockatoo were helpful in identify

Hummingbirds are vital members of terrestrial ecosystems, and because of their high metabolic requirements, they serve as indicators of ecosystem health. Monitoring the parasitic infections of hummingbirds is thus especially important. Haemosporidians, a widespread group of avian blood parasites, are known to infect hummingbirds, but little is known about the prevalence and diversity of these parasites in hummingbirds. The prevalence of haemosporidians in several hummingbird species was examined and we compared 4 different tissue types in detecting parasites by polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

In late spring of 2009 and 2010, there were reports of severe black fly (Simulium spp., shown in Fig. 1) outbreaks in various counties in Mississippi, especially those in and around the Mississippi River Delta. Complaints were of black flies attacking multiple species of backyard poultry and causing high morbidity and mortality in affected flocks. At several affected locations, black flies were readily observed swarming around and feeding on birds. A large number of these parasites were easily trapped on fly strips (Fig. 2). Multifocal to coalescing cutaneous hemorrhagic lesions, consistent wi

The competence of insect vectors to transmit diseases plays a key role in host-parasite interactions and in the dynamics of avian malaria and other haemosporidian infections (Apicomplexa, Haemosporida). However, the presence of parasite DNA in the body of blood-sucking insects does not always constitute evidence for their competence as vectors. In this study, we investigate the susceptibility of wild-caught mosquitoes (Culex spp.) to complete sporogony of Plasmodium relictum (cyt b lineage SGS1) isolated from great tits (Parus major L., 1758). Adult female mosquitoes were collected with a CO2

Avian haemosporidian parasites are responsible for avian malaria and related blood diseases, which may cause harm to various hosts. Understanding the environmental factors that affect host‒parasite associations is critical for public health. However, most studies of this topic to date have focused on pooled data from communities, while the different traits of different host species often lead to an underestimation of these factors. In this study, we investigated the phylogeographical pattern of haemosporidian parasites in a widely distributed resident bird, the Eurasian tree sparrow (Passer mo

Avian haemosporidian parasites cause high pathogenicity and lethal infections to non-native or introduced birds. Crested ibis (Nipponia nippon) resulted extinct in Japan but the Chinese population was introduced to Japan. Understanding the prevalence of pathogens of rare species is important for their conservation but it is often difficult to investigate them due to the limitation of the access. We collected parasite vector insects in 2022 and 2023 around the crested ibis conservation center in Sado Island. Among collected 214 mosquitoes and 585 biting midges, three Haemoproteus genetic lineag

In wild birds, a frequent and significant aspect of co-evolution is simultaneous infections of a single avian host with multiple parasites from different haemosporidian genera, or from the same genus. To date, the majority of haemosporidian phylogenetic studies have been focused on Passerines. Other bird groups, such as nocturnal species, particularly owls, even though they play an important role in ecosystems, have been largely neglected. In our study, the use of a combination of different methodologies, including Illumina sequencing and a nested PCR protocol along with blood smear examinatio
