The Effect of Stainless Steel and Silicone Instruments on Hand Comfort and Strength: A pilot study.

Purpose: Many dental hygienists experience musculoskeletal pain during the course of their careers, often as a result of the sustained grips on instruments and repetitive movements employed during clinical practice. Current research suggests that lighter instruments with a larger diameter reduce force and load on the hand during scaling procedures; therefore, the texture and weight of silicone handles is designed to decrease the strain placed on the hand and fingers. The purpose of this research is to investigate and compare the effect of silicone instrument handles and traditional stainless s

Utility of Hand Grip Strength in Predicting Mortality Risk in Chronic Limb-Threatening Ischemia.

BACKGROUND: Chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) is associated with increased mortality, reported as high as 50% at 5 years. Sarcopenia, defined as low skeletal muscle strength, quantity, and quality, is associated with adverse outcomes. This study investigated the association of sarcopenia using hand grip strength with 2-year mortality in people with CLTI. METHODS: This single-center prospective cohort study (NCT04027244) included patients undergoing procedures for CLTI between May 2019 and May 2021 (minimum age: ≥65 initially; ≥50 from November 2019). Hand grip strength was measured usi

Possible association between metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease predictors and hand grip strength.

Both Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) and sarcopenia are associated with numerous chronic diseases, and the link between the two broad-spectrum phenotypes has been extensively researched. We focused on the relationship between the hepatic steatosis index (HSI) and hand grip strength (HGS). The Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (2014-2019) were utilized to identify the association between estimated MASLD (eMASLD) and muscle strength. HSI determined eMASLD status, and HGS evaluated muscle strength. The HSI demonstrated a positive correlation

Parity and low hand grip strength in postmenopausal women: data from KNHANES (2014-2019).

OBJECTIVE: Low hand grip strength, with or without reduced physical performance, has been defined previously as possible sarcopenia. Identifying credential parameters of sarcopenia is crucial given its high prevalence among postmenopausal women. Since hand grip strength is a key parameter in diagnosis of sarcopenia and parity affects estrogen exposure, this study aims to examine the association between parity and hand grip strength (HGS). METHODS: Data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), from 2014 to 2019, were analyzed and included 4,102 postmenopausal

GLIM Criteria Using Hand Grip Strength Adequately Predict Six-Month Mortality in Cancer Inpatients.

Protein-calorie malnutrition is very frequent in cancer patients and is associated with an increase in morbidity and mortality. Recently, the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria were proposed to standardize the diagnosis of malnutrition. Nevertheless, these criteria were not validated in prospective studies. Our objective is to determine the prevalence of malnutrition in cancer inpatients using different diagnostic classifications, including GLIM criteria, and to establish their association with length of stay and mortality. Hence, we designed a prospective study. With

Causal relationship between dietary habits and low hand grip strength: A Mendelian randomization study.

A large number of studies have shown a close association between dietary habits and low hand grip strength. However, the presence of a causal connection between dietary habits and low hand grip strength remains unclear. All genome-wide association studies of dietary habits summary statistics were run in BOLT-LMM software (Broad Institute) using linear mixed models with 10 genetic principal components and genotyping array as covariates, and all phenotypes were averaged over multiple Food Frequency Questionnaires, adjusted for age and sex, and inverse normal transformed. Age-associated changes in hand grip and quadriceps muscle strength ratios in healthy adults.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Muscle strength may decline with age differentially in the upper and lower limbs. This information is difficult to capture through a single measure. The present study therefore aimed to characterize the relative changes in handgrip and lower limb muscle strength with aging by expressing them as a ratio. METHODS: Thirty-eight healthy volunteers aged 20-82 years performed maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) of quadriceps and handgrip using a custom-built transducer and a Jamar dynamometer respectively. RESULTS: The grip-quadriceps ratios for young adults was similar in ma

Grip strength asymmetry as a better indicator of residual hand symptoms than absolute grip strength after achieving treat-to-target in rheumatoid arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify factors associated with residual hand symptoms in well-controlled rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. METHODS: Data from 464 RA patients with DAS28-ESR < 3.2 and bilateral grip strength measurements were analysed. Grip strength asymmetry was defined as a grip difference rate ≥ 20%, calculated as follows: (Stronger hand grip strength-Weaker hand grip strength)/Stronger hand grip strength × 100. Patients were grouped by the presence (n = 107) or absence (n = 357) of hand symptoms. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify associated factors.

Hand Grip Strength at 4.5 Years of Age After Complex Cardiac Surgery in Early Infancy.

Hand grip strength (HGS) is a validated measure of muscle function. We aimed to determine HGS and its predictors in young children after complex cardiac surgery in early infancy. A prospective inception-cohort of children who had complex cardiac surgery in early infancy between 2010-2019 had HGS measured using the Martin Vigorimeter at age 4.5 years. Predictor variables (demographics, severity-of-illness perioperatively and at age 4-5 years, and outcomes at 4-5 years of age) association with HGS were determined using univariate and two multiple linear regression models (considering all variabl

Hand and forearm immersion in hot water at half-time enhances subsequent leg muscle strength.

We aimed to investigate the effects of hot-water immersion of the hand and forearm during half-time (HT) on the physiological responses, leg muscle strength, and cycling sprint performance in the cold. Ten recreationally active men performed the experimental trials that consisted of 40 min intermittent cycling, followed by a 15-min HT, and then an intermittent cycling sprint test in a cold (5°C and 50% relative humidity). During HT, the participants underwent two different interventions: seated rest (CON) or hand and forearm heating (HEAT). The intermittent cycling sprint test comprised 10 set
