Conforming to the anatomy and not the standard: A technique of eccentric capsulorrhexis and intraocular lens haptic amputation for eyes with iris coloboma.

PURPOSE: To describe a novel technique for cataract surgery in patients with iris coloboma. METHODS: The technique involves 1) creation of an inferiorly displaced capsulorrhexis and 2) amputation of one intraocular lens (IOL) haptic, thus allowing for controlled IOL decentration in the direction of an inferior iris defect. RESULTS: We report favorable outcomes in two eyes (one patient) where eccentric capsulorrhexis and haptic amputation were employed during one-piece IOL repositioning in one eye and cataract surgery with three-piece IOL implantation in the contralateral eye. CONCLUSION: In

How to Train Your Posture: Haptic Feedback Can be Used for Postural Adaptation of the Trunk During Upper-Limb Motor Training.

Poor trunk posture, especially during long periods of sitting, could lead to problems such as Low Back Pain (LBP) and Forward Head Posture (FHP). Typical solutions are based on visual or vibration-based feedback. However, these systems could lead to feedback being ignored by the user and phantom vibration syndrome, respectively. In this study, we propose using haptic feedback for postural adaptation. In this two-part study, twenty-four healthy participants (age 25.87 ± 2.17 years) adapted to three different postural targets in the anterior direction while performing a unimanual reaching task u

Targeted reaching with monocular depth information and haptic feedback: Comparing between monocular patients and normally sighted observers.

Monocular blindness impairs visual depth perception, yet patients seldom report difficulties in targeted actions like reaching, walking, or driving. We hypothesized that by utilizing monocular depth information and calibrating actions with haptic feedback, monocular patients can perceive egocentric distance and perform targeted actions. We compared targeted reaching in monocular patients, monocular-viewing, and binocular-viewing normal controls. Sixty observers reached either a far or a near target, calibrating reaches to the near target with accurate or false feedback while leaving reaches to

Single-string, closed-loop fixation modification to reposit a dislocated triple-looped haptic intraocular lens.

A technique using the single-string, closed-loop fixation method to reposit dislocated triple-looped haptic intraocular lens (IOL)-capsular bag complex is described. The long needle or curved needle with a 10-0/8-0 polypropylene suture and a 27/30-gauge needle were used as the guide needle to pass through the fenestrated haptics twice. The scleral interlaminar course was used as the fixed point. Last, a fixation knot was created in the sclerotomy by the 2 ends of the thread to close the suture loop for IOL fixation. Another knot was created about 2 to 3 mm from the exit point and was intrascle

Enhanced surgical technique for sutureless intrascleral fixation of intraocular lenses.

A simplified intrascleral fixation technique involving implantation of the Carlevale intraocular lens (IOL) in the posterior chamber is described, which lodges the T-shaped IOL haptics in the scleral wall, not requiring scleral flaps. This surgical modification reduces operative time, limits iatrogenic damage to the sclera, and avoids friction between haptics and the conjunctiva, which may cause conjunctival erosion and infection in the long term. 13 patients with crystalline lens or IOL dislocation/subluxation had surgery to implant the Carlevale IOL in the posterior chamber. Mean corrected d

Characterization of Medical Neck Palpation to Inform Design of Haptic Palpation Sensors.

Medical palpation is a task that traditionally requires a skilled practitioner to assess and diagnose a patient through direct touch and manipulation of their body. In regions with a shortage of such professionals, robotic hands or sensorized gloves could potentially capture the necessary haptic information during palpation exams and relay it to medical doctors for diagnosis. From an engineering perspective, a comprehensive understanding of the relevant motions and forces is essential for designing haptic technologies capable of fully capturing this information. This study focuses on thyroid e

Tactile Feedback in Upper Limb Prosthetics: A Pilot Study on Trans-Radial Amputees Comparing Different Haptic Modalities.

Despite technological advancements, upper limb prostheses still face high abandonment/rejection rates due to limitations in control interfaces and the absence of force/tactile feedback. Improving these aspects is crucial for enhancing user acceptance and optimizing functional performance. This pilot study, therefore, aims to understand which sensory feedback in combination with a soft robotic prosthetic hand could provide advantages for amputees, including performing everyday tasks. Tactile cues provided are contact information, grasping force, degree of hand opening, and combinations of this

Comparison of Haptic and Biometric Properties, Bacterial Load, and Student Perception of Fixative Solutions: Formaldehyde Versus Chilean Conservative Fixative Solution with and without Formaldehyde in Pig Kidneys.

One of the most widely used solutions to fix and preserve organic tissues is formaldehyde, despite reservations regarding its toxicity and the fact that formaldehyde-embalmed bodies lose their original characteristics. Anatomy laboratories have been replacing formaldehyde with solutions that retain the characteristics of fresh tissue. For this purpose, alternative solutions with a very low concentration of formaldehyde or without any formaldehyde have been analyzed. The objective of this study was to compare biometry, coloration, haptic properties, and bacterial load on animal specimens (pig k

FlexHapComm: A Flexible Wearable Haptic Interface with Dynamically Programmable Shape-Morphing Patterns Enabling Bidirectional Communication.

Haptic feedback with bidirectional communication can effectively enhance the realism and immersion in human-machine interaction. In this work, we propose the FlexHapComm interface, a flexible wearable haptic communication interface that functions as an electronic-skin system. It enables dynamically programmable shape-morphing haptic feedback patterns and supports real-time bidirectional haptic interaction by cointegrating actuation and sensing units. The interface designs an array of hydraulic amplified self-healing electrostatic (HASEL) actuators, each with a diameter of 8 mm and capable of g

Virtual Inspection System for Pumping Stations with Multimodal Feedback.

Pumping stations have undergone significant modernization and digitalization in recent decades. However, traditional virtual inspections often prioritize the visual experience and fail to effectively represent the haptic physical properties of devices during inspections, resulting in poor immersion and interactivity. This paper presents a novel virtual inspection system for pumping stations, incorporating virtual reality interaction and haptic force feedback technology to enhance immersion and realism. The system leverages a 3D model, crafted in 3Ds Max, to provide immersive visualizations. Mu

Haptic Serial Dependence in Roughness Perception and Pleasantness.

Our perception does not consist of isolated events but unfold and adapt over time, forming a continuous stream of experience. How we perceive an object is influenced not only by its intrinsic characteristics but also by our recent interactions, leading to sequential effects (i.e., serial dependence). In this study, we investigated whether such effects occur in haptic material perception, specifically in pleasantness and roughness. We also examined whether serial dependence is grounded in the physical object properties or the task at hand (i.e., perceptual attribute). To this end, we used seven

Clinical outcomes of a new four-haptic hydrophobic presbyopia-correcting intraocular lens.

A new presbyopia-correcting intraocular lens (IOL) combining bifocal and extended-depth-of-focus profiles (Symbiose: Artis Symbiose Plus; Cristalens Industrie, Lannion, France) was introduced. We compared the output with that of a standard monofocal IOL (PL E: Artis PL E). The two four-haptic hydrophobic IOLs were made of the same material from the same company. Cataract patients bilaterally implanted with either PL E or Symbiose between November 2021 and August 2022 were reviewed. The principal measures of the postoperative results were uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA); corrected dis

Design of a new haptic device and experiments in minimally invasive surgical robot.

In this paper, we designed a 8 degrees of freedom (DOFs) haptic device for applications in minimally invasive surgical robot. The device can provide three translational, three rotational and a grasping motion and force feedback capability. It is composed of three parts, including an arm mechanism, a redundant wrist mechanism and a grasper mechanism. The kinematics and gravity compensation algorithms are also detailed in the paper. In addition, the haptic device and a slave surgical robot for minimally invasive surgery (MIS) developed by our lab are integrated as a master-slave surgical robotic

Cutaneous Electrohydraulic (CUTE) Wearable Devices for Pleasant Broad-Bandwidth Haptic Cues.

By focusing on vibrations, current wearable haptic devices underutilize the skin's perceptual capabilities. Devices that provide richer haptic stimuli, including contact feedback and/or variable pressure, are typically heavy and bulky due to the underlying actuator technology and the low sensitivity of hairy skin, which covers most of the body. This article presents a system architecture for compact wearable devices that deliver salient and pleasant broad-bandwidth haptic cues: Cutaneous Electrohydraulic (CUTE) devices combine a custom materials design for soft haptic electrohydraulic actuator

Improvements in the learnability of smartphone haptic interfaces for visually impaired users.

We report the results of a study on the learnability of haptic icons used as alerts or notifications in smartphones. The aim was to explore the feasibility of using haptic icons to create assistive technologies for people with visual impairments. We compared the performance and satisfaction of users with different visual capacities (visually impaired vs. sighted) and using different learning processes (with or without a reinforcement learning stage). The reinforcement learning stage improves the recognition rate in both types of users, although the improvement obtained by the visually impaired
