Silica-quaternary ammonium "Fixed-Quat" nanofilm coated fiberglass mesh for water disinfection and harmful algal blooms control.

Intensification of pollution loading worldwide has promoted an escalation of different types of disease-causing microorganisms, such as harmful algal blooms (HABs), instigating detrimental impacts on the quality of receiving surface waters. Formation of unwanted disinfection by-products (DBPs) resulting from conventional disinfection technologies reveals the need for the development of new sustainable alternatives. Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (QACs) are cationic surfactants widely known for their effective biocidal properties at the ppm level. In this study, a novel silica-based antimicrobia

Leveraging TROPOMI red solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence for enhanced detection of harmful algal blooms in turbid coastal waters.

Frequent harmful algal blooms (HABs) pose significant risks to marine ecosystems. Traditional remote sensing indicators for HABs monitoring, based on wide-band reflectance, are susceptible to interference from non-algal materials, such as suspended sediment in turbid coastal waters. In contrast, ocean solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF), retrieved from narrow solar Fraunhofer lines, provides a more direct measurements of the optical signal emitted by phytoplankton during photosynthesis, offering new perspectives for HABs detection. We used red SIF from the TROPOMI to detect HABs in th

Wind-driven shear stress on sediment phosphorus release: Implications for water quality, and harmful algal blooms in a shallow estuary.

Internal phosphorus loading from sediments can act as a persistent nutrient source that fuels eutrophic conditions and harmful algal blooms (HABs), two global water quality issues. While most studies estimate the concentration gradient-driven diffusive flux, the role of wind-driven sediment disturbance remains less explored in shallow, coastal systems. This study quantified soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) flux from sediments in a shallow sub-tropical estuary, quantifying both the diffusive and advective pathways. Sediment mapping at 160 sites identified strong west-east gradients in total ph

HABS-BLOCKS© Reduced Harmful Algal Bloom Activity in an in-Lake Limno-Corral Mesocosm Case Study at Grand Lake St. Marys, Ohio (USA).

HABS-BLOCKS© infused with glucose have been shown to reduce cyanobacterial populations and microcystin (MC) concentrations in laboratory mesocosm studies. An in situ limno-corral (LC) mesocosm study of HABS-BLOCKS© was conducted for two weeks during the 2025 algal bloom in Grand Lake St. Marys (GLSM) (Ohio, USA). Thirty HABS-BLOCKS© or Dummy HABS-BLOCKS© (contain no glucose) were added to three treated or three control LCs, respectively. Each LC holds approximately 1,000 L of lake water. After two weeks, cyanobacterial cell densities were 89% lower in treated compared to control LCs, and chlor

Epidemiologic and clinical features of cyanobacteria harmful algal bloom exposures reported to the National Poison Data System, United States, 2010-2022: a descriptive analysis.

BACKGROUND: Harmful algal bloom occurrences have been increasingly reported globally and over time. Exposure to the variety of toxins and co-contaminants that may be present in harmful algal blooms can cause illness and even death. Poison control data is a valuable public health information source that has been used to characterize many types of toxin exposures, including harmful algal blooms. Prior studies have been limited by location and time, and knowledge gaps remain regarding cyanobacteria harmful algal bloom (cyanoHAB) exposure circumstances, and the breadth and severity of associated c

A Targeted Mitigation Strategy for Freshwater Harmful Algal Blooms through the Release of a Small-Molecule Polyphenolic Algaecide from Clay Nanotubes.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) caused by Microcystis aeruginosa (MC) pose serious threats to freshwater ecosystems, public health, and water treatment infrastructure. Here, we present a targeted mitigation technology involving flocculation and settling of MC using a flocculant, polyaluminum chloride (PAC), and a nanotubular clay, halloysite, which serves both as a ballast to aid settling of the flocs and as a reservoir to deliver algaecides. The tubular morphology of halloysite allows loading of algaecide, thus constituting a targeted release of algaecide to MC cells in the floc. The specific alg

One-step removal of harmful algal blooms by dual-functional flocculant based on self-branched chitosan integrated with flotation function.

Harmful algal blooms induce severe environmental problems. It is challenging to remove algae by the current available treatments involving complicate process and costly instruments. Here, we developed a CaO2@PEG-loaded water-soluble self-branched chitosan (CP-SBC) system, which can remove algae from water in one-step without additional instrumentation. This approach utilizes a novel flocculant (self-branched chitosan) integrated with flotation function (induced by CaO2@PEG). CP-SBC exhibited better flocculation performance than commercial flocculants, which is attributed to the enhanced bridgi

Effects of temperature, salinity and CO2 concentration on growth and toxin production of the harmful algal bloom species Alexandrium pseudogonyaulax (Dinophyceae) from the Danish Limfjord.

The marine dinoflagellate Alexandrium pseudogonyaulax is a widely distributed Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) species that produces the macrocyclic polyketide goniodomin A (GDA). Occurrences in northern European waters are increasing and a spreading of the species along a salinity gradient into the Baltic Sea has been observed. As GDA is suspected to lead to invertebrate mortality, the spreading is of concern for the environment and possibly human health. In order to assess the potential of A. pseudogonyaulax to adapt to the environmental conditions in the Baltic Sea and the risk of future harmful b

Hepatic NLRP3-Derived Hsp70 Binding to TLR4 Mediates MASLD to MASH Progression upon Inhibition of PP2A by Harmful Algal Bloom Toxin Microcystin, a Second Hit.

Harmful algal bloom toxin microcystin has been associated with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) progression and hepatocellular carcinoma, though the mechanisms remain unclear. Using an established mouse model of MASLD, we show that the NLRP3-Hsp70-TLR4 axis drives in part the inflammation of the liver lobule that results in the progression of MASLD to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). Results showed that mice deficient in NLRP3 exhibited decreased MASH pathology, blocked Hsp70 expression, and co-binding with NLRP3, a crucial protein compon

From Field to Faucet: Phosphorus-Driven Harmful Algal Blooms, Cyanotoxin Exposure, and Clinical Implications for Primary Care Physicians-A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Agricultural phosphorus enrichment of freshwater ecosystems drives eutrophication and cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (HABs) that contaminate drinking water, recreational sites, and food webs with cyanotoxins. Translating this environmental science into clinical practice for primary care physicians remains limited. OBJECTIVES: This narrative review traced the causal chain from agricultural phosphorus transport and cyanobacterial bloom ecology through cyanotoxin-mediated health consequences. The goal is to give primary care physicians a practical, One Health-based resource for

Harmful algal blooms and coastal communities: Socioeconomic impacts and actions taken to cope with the 2015 U.S. West Coast domoic acid event.

The 2015 U.S. West Coast domoic acid event was caused by a massive harmful algal bloom (HAB) that consisted mostly of the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia australis. It was unprecedented in its toxicity and geographic extent and resulted in extended and widespread closures of the lucrative commercial Dungeness crab and popular recreational razor clam fisheries. The fishery closures led to federal fisheries disaster declarations and generated an economic shock for coastal communities that depend on access to these marine resources. This study reports on the socioeconomic impacts of the 2015 HAB across 1

Compound eutrophication index: An integrated approach for assessing ecological risk and identifying the critical element controlling harmful algal blooms in coastal seas.

Current ecological risk assessment and controlling element identification methods of harmful algal blooms (HABs) are not connected. Here, we identified the controlling elements by correlation and principal component analyses, and the analytic hierarchy process. A compound eutrophication index (CEI) integrating risk assessment with controlling element identification was constructed and verified using data collected from Jiaozhou Bay, China. The CEI results agreed with the chlorophyll-a concentration and the main eutrophication assessment results. The HAB risk assessment of the CEI was more effi

Examining harmful algal blooms through a disaster risk management lens: A case study of the 2015 U.S. West Coast domoic acid event.

The human dimensions of harmful algal blooms (HABs) are becoming increasingly apparent as they grow in frequency and magnitude in some regions of the world under changing ocean conditions. One such region is the U.S. West Coast, where HABs of toxigenic species of Pseudo-nitzschia have been found to coincide with or closely follow periods of warming. In 2015, the region experienced a massive HAB of Pseudo-nitzschia that was associated with the 2014-16 Northeast Pacific marine heatwave. The HAB event delayed the opening of the lucrative commercial Dungeness crab fishery for up to 5 months and cl

Use of two-dimensional gel electrophoresis to differentiate morphospecies of Alexandrium minutum, a paralytic shellfish poisoning toxin-producing dinoflagellate of harmful algal blooms.

Contamination of shellfish with paralytic shellfish poisoning toxins (PST) produced by toxic harmful algal blooms (HABs) have been negatively affecting the shellfish and aquaculture industries worldwide. Therefore, accurate and early identification of toxic phytoplankton species is crucial in HABs surveillance programs that allow fish-farmers to take appropriate preventive measures in shellfish harvesting and other aquaculture activities to overcome the negative impacts of HABs on human health. The identification of toxic dinoflagellates present in the water is currently a time-consuming opera

Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Bloom Toxin Microcystin and Increased Vibrio Occurrence as Climate-Change-Induced Biological Co-Stressors: Exposure and Disease Outcomes via Their Interaction with Gut-Liver-Brain Axis.

The effects of global warming are not limited to rising global temperatures and have set in motion a complex chain of events contributing to climate change. A consequence of global warming and the resultant climate change is the rise in cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cyano-HABs) across the world, which pose a threat to public health, aquatic biodiversity, and the livelihood of communities that depend on these water systems, such as farmers and fishers. An increase in cyano-HABs and their intensity is associated with an increase in the leakage of cyanotoxins. Microcystins (MCs) are hepato

What makes a cyanobacterial bloom disappear? A review of the abiotic and biotic cyanobacterial bloom loss factors.

Cyanobacterial blooms present substantial challenges to managers and threaten ecological and public health. Although the majority of cyanobacterial bloom research and management focuses on factors that control bloom initiation, duration, toxicity, and geographical extent, relatively little research focuses on the role of loss processes in blooms and how these processes are regulated. Here, we define a loss process in terms of population dynamics as any process that removes cells from a population, thereby decelerating or reducing the development and extent of blooms. We review abiotic (e.g., h

Warfare under the waves: a review of bacteria-derived algaecidal natural products.

Covering: 1960s to 2024Harmful algal blooms pose a major threat to aquatic ecosystems and can impact human health. The frequency and intensity of these blooms has increased over recent decades, driven primarily by climate change and an increase in nutrient runoff. Algal blooms often produce toxins that contaminate water sources, disrupt fisheries, and harm human health. These blooms may also result in oxygen-deprived environments leading to mass fish deaths that threaten the survival of other aquatic life. In freshwater and estuarine ecosystems, traditional chemical strategies to mitigate alga

Neurological illnesses associated with Florida red tide (Karenia brevis) blooms.

Human respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses can result from exposures to brevetoxins originating from coastal Florida red tide blooms, comprising the marine alga Karenia brevis (K. brevis). Only limited research on the extent of human health risks and illness costs due to K. brevis blooms has been undertaken to date. Because brevetoxins are known neurotoxins that are able to cross the blood-brain barrier, it is possible that exposure to brevetoxins may be associated with neurological illnesses. This study explored whether K. brevis blooms may be associated with increases in the numbers of

Low-concentration sodium percarbonate treatment of a severe cyanobacterial bloom: insights into chemical and biological changes in a small firewater reservoir.

Mitigating, controlling, and ideally preventing cyanobacterial blooms is an urgent priority because of their negative effects on aquatic (and indirectly terrestrial) ecosystems. Among algaecide-based approaches, hydrogen peroxide has proven effective at reducing cyanobacterial biomass, with the advantage of leaving no persistent residues in water or sediment. Although there is extensive research on hydrogen peroxide releasing sodium percarbonate as an oxidizing and disinfecting agent, the wide variety of environmental conditions, cyanobacterial species composition, and bloom dynamics make it n

Laboratory-Scale Evaluation of a Plant-Based Algaecide for Harmful and Non-Harmful Algae.

Harmful algal blooms can negatively impact freshwater, estuarine, and coastal marine systems globally and pose serious risks to water quality, human and ecosystem health, and food production. Algae can produce toxic compounds, directly interfere with aquaculture species through (e.g.,) the production of foam or mucilage, as well as causing diseases and disorders in fish, and can result in hypoxic conditions when the bloom senesces. Application of US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) registered algaecides can be effective, scalable, and inexpensive, but there is growing interest in plant-
