Racially motivated hate crime exposure and birth outcomes: Analysis of US vital statistics data 1995-2020.

Exposure to racially motivated hate crime represents a salient form of structural and interpersonal racism that is associated with detrimental mental and physical health. Although prior research shows that stress during pregnancy can influence birth outcomes, empirical evidence linking hate crime exposure to adverse birth outcomes remains limited. Using National Vital Statistics Birth Data from 1995 to 2020 linked to county-level hate crime data, we use linear probability models and leverage variation in the timing of hate crimes in the county to examine the association between maternal exposu

'It's a love-hate relationship': female crown prosecutors' experiences of prosecuting sexual violence and abuse cases.

This study used interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) to examine six female New Zealand Crown prosecutors' (CPs') experiences of working with adult and child sexual violence and abuse (SVA) cases. Three themes were developed from the data: navigating the emotional and legal aspects of the role without a compass, the impacts of working with potentially traumatic material, and factors influencing wellbeing and help seeking. Working with SVA cases was viewed as rewarding by participants; however, exposure to sexual trauma was perceived to exacerbate occupational stressors and impacts of wo

Sense of Emptiness: The Role of Adverse Childhood Experiences, Preoccupied Attachment, Self-Hate, and Burdening Guilt.

The sense of emptiness is still a poorly defined construct in the literature, yet it is frequently reported in individuals with borderline personality disorder, depressive symptoms, and narcissistic personality disorder. This paper aims to replicate those research studies showing that there are significant correlations between emptiness, insecure attachment styles, maladaptive childhood experiences, shame, impulsivity, depression, and borderline and narcissistic personality features. Additionally, it was hypothesized that a significant correlation would exist between the sense of emptiness and

I hate you when I am anxious: Anxiety during the COVID-19 epidemic and ideological hostility.

Most previous studies that examined the effect of anxiety on hostility towards a distinct group have focused on cases in which we hate those we are afraid of. The current study, on the other hand, examines the relationship between anxiety in one domain and hostility towards a distinct group that is not the source of that anxiety. We focus here on symptoms of anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic, which have become increasingly frequent, and show that the implications of such mental difficulties are far-reaching, posing a threat to relationships between ideological groups. In two studies conduct

'I hate wasting the hospital's time': Experiences of emergency department admissions of Australian people with epilepsy.

AIM: This paper investigates the reasons and extent of hospital emergency department (ED) attendance by people with epilepsy in Wave 4 of The Australian Longitudinal Survey 2016-17. METHOD: Wave 4 had 393 respondents who completed the survey, which included questions relating to their use of hospital and healthcare services. Of these, 121 (31%; 82 females) reported one or more admissions to the ED within the previous 12 months. We conducted a mixed methods analysis - using quantitative measures to explore the type and number of admissions, factors relating to increased admissions, and a quali

Dehumanization through humour and conspiracies in online hate towards Chinese people during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been widespread conversations about the origins of the virus and who to blame for it. This article focuses on the online hate directed at Chinese and Asian people during the pandemic. Taking a critical discursive psychological approach, we analysed seven online threads related to COVID-19 and China from two Finnish websites (Suomi24 and Ylilauta) and one US (8kun) site. We identified three discursive trends associated with dehumanising Chinese populations: 'monstrous Chinese', 'immoral Chinese' and 'China as a threat', which created diff

Surviving and thriving in spite of hate: Burnout and resiliency in clinicians working with patients attracted by violent extremism.

Violent extremism (VE) is often manifested through hate discourses, which are hurtful for their targets, shatter social cohesion, and provoke feelings of impending threat. In a clinical setting, these discourses may affect clinicians in different ways, eroding their capacity to provide care. This clinical article describes the subjective experiences and the coping strategies of clinicians engaged with individuals attracted by VE. A focus group was held with eight clinicians and complemented with individual interviews and field notes. Clinicians reported four categories of personal consequences

The role of m6A RNA methylation in a love-hate relationship between porcine rotavirus and host cells.

N6-methyladenosine (m6A), the most abundant mRNA modification, regulates various mRNA metabolism to affect numerous physiological processes, including immune response. Interestingly, many RNA viruses contain internal m6A modifications that contribute to viral replication and innate immune escape process, but its mechanisms remain unclear. Porcine rotavirus (PoRV) is a common cause of diarrhea and gastroenteritis in piglets. Here, we first revealed the m6A methylation profile on the PoRV genome. PoRV infection significantly reduced methyltransferase METTL3 expression and induced nuclear-cytopla

A Systematic Review on Hate Speech among Children and Adolescents: Definitions, Prevalence, and Overlap with Related Phenomena.

Little is known about the current state of research on the involvement of young people in hate speech. Thus, this systematic review presents findings on a) the prevalence of hate speech among children and adolescents and on hate speech definitions that guide prevalence assessments for this population; and b) the theoretical and empirical overlap of hate speech with related concepts. This review was guided by the Cochrane approach. To be included, publications were required to deal with real-life experiences of hate speech, to provide empirical data on prevalence for samples aged 5 to 21 years

Changing ageist mindsets - An experimental study on the effects of intervention methods on ageist hate speech perception.

Globally, one in two people discriminates against older adults. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this issue, as evidenced by the increase in ageist hate speech in social media, highlighting the urgent need to combat ageism also in digital spaces. To identify effective online interventions against ageism and hate speech, this study compares three intervention methods: 1) exposure to counter-stereotypical traits, 2) perspective taking, and 3) implementation intention, focusing on their differences in targeting explicit or implicit ageist biases. In an online experiment with a one factor bet

Mental Health of Transgender Veterans in US States With and Without Discrimination and Hate Crime Legal Protection.

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether indicators of community- and state-level lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender equality are associated with transgender veterans' mental health. METHODS: We extracted Veterans Administration data for patients who were diagnosed with gender identity disorder, had at least 1 visit in 2013, and lived in a zip code with a Municipality Equality Index score (n = 1640). We examined the associations of whether a state included transgender status in employment nondiscrimination laws and in hate crimes laws with mood disorders; alcohol, illicit drug, and tobacco use dis

From hate to harmony: Leveraging large language models for safer speech in times of COVID-19 crisis.

This study investigates the rampant spread of offensive and derogatory language during the COVID-19 pandemic and aims to mitigate it through machine learning. Employing advanced Large Language Models (LLMs), the research develops a sophisticated framework adept at detecting and transforming abusive and hateful speech. The project begins by meticulously compiling a dataset, focusing specifically on Chinese language abuse and hate speech. It incorporates an extensive list of 30 pandemic-related terms, significantly enriching the resources available for this type of research. A two-tier detection

"I Love and Hate Him in the Same Breath": Relationships of Adult Survivors of Sexual Abuse With Their Perpetrating Siblings.

The term sibling sexual abuse (SSA) captures a broad continuum of sexual behaviors in childhood and adolescence that exceed the threshold of age-appropriate curiosity. Based on a sample of 15 adult survivors of SSA, this qualitative study examines experiences of relationships with perpetrating siblings during childhood and adulthood. Thematic analysis of semistructured qualitative interviews reveals two continua that characterize SSA survivors' lives: the "reciprocity-coercion" continuum in childhood and the "distance-closeness" continuum in adulthood. Findings reveal that regardless of how th

Exposure to hate in online and traditional media: A systematic review and meta-analysis of the impact of this exposure on individuals and communities.

THE PROBLEM: People use social media platforms to chat, search, and share information, express their opinions, and connect with others. But these platforms also facilitate the posting of divisive, harmful, and hateful messages, targeting groups and individuals, based on their race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or political views. Hate content is not only a problem on the Internet, but also on traditional media, especially in places where the Internet is not widely available or in rural areas. Despite growing awareness of the harms that exposure to hate can cause, especially to victims

For Whom Does Hate Crime Hurt More? A Comparison of Consequences of Victimization Across Motives and Crime Types.

Hate crimes have been found to have more severe consequences than other parallel crimes that were not motivated by the offenders' hostility toward someone because of their real or perceived difference. Many countries today have hate crime laws that make it possible to increase the penalties for such crimes. The main critique against hate crime laws is that they punish thoughts. Instead, proponents of hate crime laws argue that sentence enhancement is justified because hate crimes cause greater harm. This study compares consequences of victimization across groups of victims to test for whom hat

Topological data mapping of online hate speech, misinformation, and general mental health: A large language model based study.

The advent of social media has led to an increased concern over its potential to propagate hate speech and misinformation, which, in addition to contributing to prejudice and discrimination, has been suspected of playing a role in increasing social violence and crimes in the United States. While literature has shown the existence of an association between posting hate speech and misinformation online and certain personality traits of posters, the general relationship and relevance of online hate speech/misinformation in the context of overall psychological wellbeing of posters remain elusive.

"No Woman Belongs to Politics": Gender-Based Hate Speech Against Female Politicians in Czech Antiestablishment Groups on Facebook.

This article introduces a mixed-method framework for analyzing online gender-based violence. It combines automated analysis with qualitative investigation of periods of intensified hostility, providing a deeper understanding of the triggers, dynamics, and broader context of hostile communication. The framework is demonstrated through an analysis of content published in 17 Czech Facebook antiestablishment groups, drawing on a dataset of 1.94 million comments and 154 thousand posts. The empirical findings provide further evidence that female politicians are disproportionately targeted by gender-

"I Laughed Along for Years But Hated It Inside:" Understanding Nuance in Peer Teasing Experiences Using a Thematic Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Peer teasing is ubiquitous, yet ambiguous in nature. Despite recent attempts to delineate and clarify differences in teasing experienced as playful versus harmful, there remains overlap and complexity in these interactions. In the current study, we present a conceptual model of teasing, which includes many nested features that dynamically interact within a teasing episode. Using this conceptual model to guide our work, the goal of the current study was to use qualitative inquiry to bring further conceptual clarity to the overlap between teasing that is experienced as playful vers

Counterspeech encouraging users to adopt the perspective of minority groups reduces hate speech and its amplification on social media.

Online intergroup hostility is a pervasive and troubling issue, yet experimental evidence on how to curb it remains scarce. This study examines counterspeech as a user-driven strategy to reduce hate speech. Drawing on theories that suggest adopting the perspective of minority groups can reduce prejudice, we randomized four counterspeech strategies across the senders of 2102 xenophobic Twitter messages. Compared to a passive control group, we find that the pooled effect of the three perspective-centered strategies-traditional perspective-taking, analogical perspective-taking, and perspective ge
