OBJECTIVES: Dermatomyositis (DM) is a systemic autoimmune disease, which typically affects the striated muscle with a variable involvement of the skin and other organs. Clinically amyopathic DM (CADM) is a combination of hypomyopathic DM (HDM) and amyopathic DM (ADM), with a characteristic of skin-predominant lesions. To date, large-scale studies on the prognostic factors of DM/CADM have been limited. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prognostic values of clinical manifestations in DM/CADM and to develop a prognostic nomogram for DM/CADM.
METHODS: A development cohort (n=239), an inter

Osteomyelitis is an inflammatory condition of the bones that often starts with an infection of the medullary cavity and swiftly extends to the haversian system and periosteum. If drainage and antimicrobials are ineffective, acute osteomyelitis may progress to chronic osteomyelitis. Here, we offer a unique case that analyzes the radiographic and clinical characteristics of osteomyelitis with underlying disease. Cysts and cyst-like lesions of the jaws must be diagnosed and evaluated using radiographic findings in conjunction with clinical complaints. This case study examines the circumstances th

Similar to how fiber orientation affects composite materials, osteon orientation affects the elasticity and fracture behavior of cortical bone. The objective of this work is to predict the combined effect of orientations of the osteon, applied load, and various crack lengths on the fracture characteristics of cortical bone. Orthotropic modeling and analyses of cortical bone were carried out using the linear-elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) based extended finite element method (XFEM). Five values of applied mode-I and mode-II load, five distinct crack lengths, and seven angular osteon orientat

BACKGROUND: A defective nutrient foramen in the fovea capitis femoris was hypothesized to reflect the blood circulation pattern of the femoral head, leading to insufficient blood supply and causing osteonecrosis of the femoral head.
METHODS: Normal and necrotic femoral head specimens were collected. The necrotic femoral head group was divided into a non-traumatic and traumatic subgroup. 3D scanning was applied to read the number, the diameter, and the total cross-sectional area of the nutrient foramina in the fovea capitis femoris. Chi-squared tests and independent t-tests were used to detect

Laminar bone or primary plexiform tissue, not Haversian bone, shows an alternative concentric pattern of laminar-bone units or plates around the bone marrow periphery of long bones, although the laminar bone is gradually replaced by osteons during the growth period. One laminar-bone unit is constructed with a hypercalcified line in the center, woven bone on both sides of the line, and lamellar bone with laminated appositional lines. Such a laminar bone showing a homogeneous calcification has been reported in young calves and some young large animals, but it has not been reported in foals altho

The purpose of this study was to investigate the functional characteristics of human mandibular condyles from a morphological viewpoint. The structure of bone in the human mandibular condyles with osteophyte formation was observed macroscopically and microscopically and compared with that in the condyles which seemed to be normal. The following observations were made: 1. Generally, it was observed that remodeling seemed to occur frequently in compact bone in the joint surface area of the mandibular condyle. 2. As the distribution of lamellar bone, nonlamellar, and bundle bone in the joint surf

The vascular anatomy of the cortical bone and the canal system are highly correlated, and the former has an important bearing on shape and microscopic lamellar structure, as it is established in the progression of the remodelling process. The classical description of a longitudinal system of canals (Havers') connected by the transversal Volkmann's canals is the generally acknowledged model of the structural organization of the cortex. However, it is remarkably difficult to study the circulation inside the compact bone in detail owing to its hard, calcified matrix, and the methods thus far appl

An important concept in bone mechanics is that osteons influence mechanical properties in several ways, including contributing to toughness and fatigue strength by debonding from the interstitial matrix so as to "bridge" developing cracks. Observations of "pulled out" osteons on fracture surfaces are thought to be indicative of such behavior. We tested the hypothesis that osteon pullout varies with mode of loading (fatigue vs. monotonic), cortical region, elastic modulus, and fatigue life. Mid-diaphseal beams from the dorsal, medial, and lateral regions of the equine third metacarpal bone were

OBJECTIVE: This study describes the radiographic, CT, and MR imaging features of surface osteomas of the appendicular skeleton in four patients without Gardner's syndrome or tuberous sclerosis and reviews the incidence and management options of this uncommon tumor.
CONCLUSION: On imaging (best seen on CT), the osteomas were homogeneously dense-as dense at the periphery as the base-and without an accompanying soft-tissue mass, cortical destruction, or intramedullary invasion. The margins of each osteoma were smooth or smoothly lobulated. When the correct diagnosis was considered in two patient

Bone tissue is a biological composite material with a complex hierarchical structure that could continuously adjust its internal structure to adapt to the alterations in the external load environment. The fluid flow within bone is the main route of osteocyte metabolism, and the pore pressure as well as the fluid shear stress generated by it are important mechanical stimuli perceived by osteocytes. Owing to the irregular multiscale structure of bone tissue, the fluid stimulation that lacunar-canalicular network (LCN) in different regions of the tissue underwent remained unclear. In this study,

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), also known as "brittle bone disease," is a genetic bone disorder. OI bones experience frequent fractures. Surgical procedures are usually followed by clinicians in the management of OI. It has been observed physical activity is equally beneficial in reducing OI bone fractures in both children and adults as mechanical stimulation improves bone mass and strength. Loading-induced mechanical strain and interstitial fluid flow stimulate bone remodeling activities. Several studies have characterized strain environment in OI bones, whereas very few studies attempted to c

This study evaluated the morphology and elemental composition of Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) bones (humerus, radius, ulna, femur, tibia, fibula and rib). Computerized tomography was used to image the intraosseous structure, compact bones were processed using histological techniques, and elemental profiling of compact bone was conducted using X-ray fluorescence. There was no clear evidence of an open marrow cavity in any of the bones; rather, dense trabecular bone was found in the bone interior. Compact bone contained double osteons in the radius, tibia and fibula. The osteon structure was

Up to date, little is known about the repair mode of microdamage in osteonal cortical bone resulting from bone screw implantation. In this study, self-tapping titanium cortical bone screws were inserted into the tibial diaphyses of 24 adult male rabbits. The animals were sacrificed at 1 day, 2 weeks, 1 month and 2 months after surgery. Histomorphometric measurement and confocal microscopy were performed on basic fuchsin stained bone sections to examine the morphological characteristics of microdamage, bone resorption activity and spatial relationship between microdamage and bone resorption. Using a new histometric method, the orientation of primary osteons was measured in the main long bones of adult mallards (Anas platyrhynchos). In the light of previous biomechanical and ontogenetic studies, a functional hypothesis is proposed, explaining the histological differences observed between long bones; laminar bone tissue, mainly found in the wing bones, may be a biomechanical adaptation to torsional loads caused by flapping flight.

14 femoral heads with late stage avascular necrosis of different etiologies were histologically examined, with special attention to vascular structures. Decalcified slices were stained with hematoxylin-eosin, safranin-O, van Gieson stain, and Martius Scarlet Blue. Immunohistochemical techniques with antibodies against Factor VIII, and Ulex Europeus Lectin were used to visualize the endothelium of the blood vessels. 5 distinct zones of the necrotic femoral head could be identified. The necrotic zone contained areas with richly vascularized connective tissue. In the transitional zone, several ar

Osteon morphology provides valuable information about the interplay between different processes involved in bone remodelling. The correct quantitative interpretation of these morphological features is challenging due to the complexity of interactions between osteoblast behaviour, and the evolving geometry of cortical pores during pore closing. We present a combined experimental and mathematical modelling study to provide insights into bone formation mechanisms during cortical bone remodelling based on histological cross-sections of quiescent human osteons and hypothesis-testing analyses. We in

Osteoporosis is one of the most common disorders in postmenopausal women, affecting the quality of life and increasing the risk for fractures in minor traumas. Changes in the bone microarchitecture causes static changes in the body and affects motility. In this study, we analyzed two groups of women, one with physiological menopause and one with surgically induced menopause. The diagnosis of osteoporosis was suspected based on the clinical symptoms and confirmed by assessing bone mineral density by the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Comparing some clinical and biological aspects ther
