Abstract. Observers can recover motion with respect to the head during an eye movement by comparing signals encoding retinal motion and the velocity of pursuit. Evidently there is a mismatch between these signals because perceived head-centred motion is not always veridical. One example is the Filehne illusion, in which a stationary object appears to move in the opposite direction to pursuit. Like the motion aftereffect, the phenomenal experience of the Filehne illusion is one in which the stimulus moves but does not seem to go anywhere. This raises problems when measuring the illusion by moti

BACKGROUND: Early theories for cervical dystonia, as promoted by Hassler, emphasized the role of the midbrain interstitial nucleus of Cajal. Focus then shifted to the basal ganglia, and it was further supported with the success of deep brain stimulation. Contemporary theories suggested the role of the cerebellum, but even more recent hypotheses renewed interest in the midbrain. Although the pretectum was visited on several occasions, we still do not know about the physiology of midbrain neurons in cervical dystonia.
METHODS: We analyzed the unique database of pretectal neurons collected in th

Although the basal ganglia have long been implicated in the initiation of actions, their contribution to movement remains a matter of dispute. Using wireless multi-electrode recording and motion tracking, we examined the relationship between single-unit activity in the sensorimotor striatum and movement kinematics. We recorded single-unit activity from medium spiny projection neurons and fast-spiking interneurons while monitoring the movements of mice using motion tracking. In Experiment 1, we trained mice to generate movements reliably by water-depriving them and giving them periodic cued suc

Head injury can cause extrapyramidal movement disorders such as tremors, parkinsonism, dystonia, chorea, myoclonus, and tics. Pure adventitious movements are rare, but combinations with paresis, spasticity, apraxia, or ataxia occur in approximately 20% of cases of severe head injury, in many cases appearing or evolving in the months following the injury. Tremors may improve in time but many of the other syndromes tend to persist. Reversible causes such as medications or metabolic derangements are occasionally identifiable. Some of these adventitious movements can be improved using neuroactive

BACKGROUND: Eye-hand coordination contributes to sports performance. The positive effect of head movement on the accuracy of eye-hand coordination of some subjects has been demonstrated for self-paced or single tasks, but not for rapid, repetititive tasks, such as those sometimes required in sports. The purpose of this study was to determine whether head movement is detrimental to performance of a rapid, repetitive pointing task.
METHODS: Pointing accuracy and speed were tested using the AcuVision 1000 trainer, a device designed to assess and train eye-hand coordination. Twenty-six subjects p

Head movements of insects play a vital role in diverse locomotory behaviors including flying and walking. Because insect eyes move minimally within their sockets, their head movements are essential to reduce visual blur and maintain a stable gaze. As in most vertebrates, gaze stabilization behavior in insects requires the integration of both visual and mechanosensory feedback by the neck motor neurons. Although visual feedback is derived from the optic flow over the retina of their compound eyes, mechanosensory feedback is derived from their organs of balance, similar to the vestibular system

The purpose of this study was to clarify the temporal coordination between gaze, head, and arm movements during forehand rallies in table tennis. Collegiate male table tennis players (n = 7) conducted forehand rallies at a constant tempo (100, 120, and 150 bpm) using a metronome. In each tempo condition, participants performed 30 strokes (a total of 90 strokes). Gaze, head, and dominant arm (shoulder, elbow, and wrist) movements were recorded with an eye-tracking device equipped with a Gyro sensor and a 3-D motion capture system. The results showed that the effect of head movements relative to

INTRODUCTION: Video head impulse testing is frequently used to evaluate the vestibular function. During this test, eye movement responses are recorded with video-oculography (VOG). However, the use of VOG can sometimes be challenging, especially due to pupil detection problems (e.g., blinking, droopy eyelids, etc.). Therefore, this study investigated whether electro-oculography (EOG), a technique that does not depend on pupil tracking but on the orientation of the corneoretinal potential, might be an alternative to VOG for quantifying eye movement responses during head impulse testing.

The neural systems controlling head movements are not well delineated in humans. It is not clear whether the ipsilateral or contralateral primary motor cortex is involved in turning the head right or left. Furthermore, the exact location of the neck motor area in the somatotopic organization of the motor homunculus is still debated and evidence for contributions from other brain regions in humans is scarce. Because currently available neuroimaging methods are not generally suitable for mapping brain activation patterns during head movements, we conducted fMRI scans during isometric tasks of th

A portable surface-integrated EMG (IEMG) device was used to investigate the strain caused by low and high Gz forces and head movements on the cervical erector spinae muscles during flight missions. The obtained IEMG activities were normalized by comparing them with activities representing maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) of the cervical erector spinae muscles in each subject. The muscular strain increased with increasing Gz forces and head movements. Under +7.0 Gz the mean muscular strain was 5.9-fold compared with +1.0 Gz and was 37.9% of the MVC. In some individuals, the muscular toleranc

The perturbing effects of vibration applied to head and body structures are known to destabilize motor control and elicit corrective responses. Although such vibration response testing may be informative for identifying sensorimotor deficits, the effect of whole-head vibration has not been tested on oromotor control. The purpose of this study was to determine how jaw movements respond to the perturbing effects of whole-head vibration during jaw motor tasks. Ten healthy adults completed speech, chewing, and two syllable repetition tasks with and without whole-head vibration. Jaw movements were

The neck-tongue syndrome is an extremely rare entity consisting of the compression of the second cervical root in the atloaxoid space in relation to certain brusque movements of the neck. Given the infrequency of this syndrome, the authors present a diagnosed and controlled case of the same in the Reina Sofia Hospital in Tudela. A 25 year old patient was consulted who, for some time, had presented paresthesia in the right half of the tongue and contraction of the cervical musculature related to certain neck postures made during sports activities. Clinical examination was completely normal. Rad

To maintain clear vision, the images on the retina must remain reasonably stable. Head movements are generally dealt with successfully by counter-rotation of the eyes induced by the combined actions of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and the optokinetic reflex. A problem of importance relates to the value of the so-called intrinsic gain of the VOR (VORG) in man, and how this gain is modulated to provide appropriate eye movements. We have studied these problems in two situations: 1. fixation of a stationary object of the visual space while the head moves; 2. fixation of an object moving with

We performed head lice movement studies to elucidate factors influencing orientation and movement of head lice. Studies included observation of lice movements on hand and forearm at different positions of the upper limb; movements exposed to unshaved and shaved forearm; and movements with and without antennae. In 57 of 60 (95.0%) observations while holding the hand down, lice moved proximal, and 3 (5%) distal. While holding the hand up, 37/60 (61.7%) moved proximal, and 23 (38.3%) distal (p < 0.0001). On the unshaved limb, 29/30 (96.7%) moved proximal, with clockwise movements in 26/30 (86.7%)

OBJECTIVES: The effect of body posture on movement of the jaw and head has not yet been clearly established. The relationship between jaw and head movement has implications for conditions such as temporomandibular joint disorders which can be associated with neck pain. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to examine the effect of starting posture on three-dimensional movement of the jaw and head, and to examine the relationship between head and jaw movement during mouth opening.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fourteen healthy participants performed jaw opening to comfortable and maximal am

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Sleep-related head jerks (SRHJ) are often considered as a physiological motor phenomenon, occurring mainly during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Their clinical relevance and links with other sleep parameters are unclear. We characterized the clinical and polysomnographic features of patients with excessive SRHJ and compare them with healthy controls and patients with isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD).
METHODS: A total of 30 patients (19 males, 27.5 y.o., 16.0-51.0) with a REM-HJ index >30/h were identified over a period of 5 years. All had a video-polysomnographic

A Salter innominate osteotomy is used to treat acetabular dysplasia, but reports of its effects on the position of the femoral head are few and conflicting. Lateral shift would increase the resultant forces acting on the joint and be detrimental. We studied 15 Salter innominate osteotomies and demonstrated that a correctly performed osteotomy does not significantly alter the distance from the centre of the femoral head to the midline of the body. Stereophotogrammetry was used in three patients to delineate the axis of rotation of the distal acetabular fragment and determine the locus of moveme
